Celebrated Gospel singer Celestine Donkor has once again expressed her profound gratitude to legendary Ghanaian boxer, Azumah Nelson for funding her secondary education years back.

In a post on Facebook to celebrate the boxer on his 66th birthday, Celestine reminisced about Azumah Nelson’s generous gesture to her at a time her family faced financial difficulties.

In a touching message, Celestine underscored how important Nelson’s support had helped her reach this height in her career.

“A glorious birthday to the man that gave me secondary education. My family at that time had no ideas how my secondary education would be funded but for this great man. Happy birthday, Azumah ‘Zoom Zoom’ Nelson. I thank God for your life,” Celestine wrote on July 19.

Azumah Nelson’s generosity and support not only enabled Celestine to pursue her education but also laid the foundation for her successful career in music.

The gospel singer decided to acknowledge Azumah’s impact in her life on his special day.

Liberia contemplates moving capital after disastrous flooding

Monrovia city

Flash floods triggered by torrential rains between the end of June and early July left some 48,000 Liberians in urgent need, the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) said.

The flood-prone capital was particularly badly hit, owing in part to overpopulation, a poor sewage system, and a lack of building regulation.

According to the Daily Observer, quoting NDMA Executive Director Ansu Dulleh, ‘’women, children, and the elderly are the majority of the affected. The scale of the flooding is unlike any we have ever witnessed. Our systems are overwhelmed and cannot address all the competing needs associated with this crisis.’’

Dulleh called on partners, both local and international, to support the NDMA in addressing the needs of the affected population.

According to the newspaper, an estimated 100,000 people are “at risk of flooding, windstorms, and coastal erosion, with incidences of water-borne diseases also expected to rise.”

And the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework 2020-2024 for Liberia says that the country needs “more resilience and adaptive capacity to combat the effects of climate change.”

Moving the capital?

Meeting to discuss the persistent flooding problem, a senate joint committee in early July suggested establishing a new city to replace Monrovia.

Nigeria’s Abuja is one of a handful of planned capital cities on the African continent.

Tanzania’s capital Dodoma and Yamoussoukro in Côte d’Ivoire were also established as administrative capitals towards the end of the 20th century, with all three cities occupying geographically central positions in their respective countries.

Monrovia is home to 1.5 million people and lies on the Atlantic coast of Liberia, one of the poorest countries in the world.

The city is the economic, political, and cultural hub of the country, with the Freeport of Monrovia providing a gateway for Liberian exports including iron ore, rubber, and timber to reach the United States and Europe.

UAE hands 57 Bangladeshis long-term jail terms for protests

Violence erupts across Bangladesh

A court in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has jailed 57 Bangladeshi nationals for staging protests in the Gulf country against their own government, according to the state media.

Three Bangladeshis were sentenced to life, 53 others to 10 years in prison and one to 11 years for “gathering and inciting riots” during protests on Friday, the official Emirati news agency WAM said on Monday, adding they would be deported after the completion of their prison terms.

A witness confirmed that the defendants organised large-scale marches in several streets of the UAE “in protest against decisions made by the Bangladeshi government”, it added.

Unauthorised protests are prohibited in the UAE. The country’s penal code also criminalises offending foreign states or jeopardising ties with them.

Protests led by students began earlier this month in Bangladesh after a court in the capital, Dhaka, last month reinstated a government quota system that reserved more than 50 percent of the civil services jobs. Students have been demanding that job quotas, which include 30 percent reserved for descendants of freedom fighters who participated in the 1971 war of independence, be abolished amid stagnant job growth and high rates of youth unemployment.

The government crackdown on the protests and attacks on sit-ins by groups linked to the governing party triggered nationwide unrest, posing the biggest challenge to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was sworn in for her fourth term in January.

Malaysia tracks down missing oil tanker which fled after collision

Malaysia tracks down missing oil tanker

Malaysia says it has intercepted a large oil tanker that was involved in a collision with another ship before fleeing the scene and turning off its tracking system.

The coastguard says it has located and detained Ceres I, sailing under the flag of São Tomé and Príncipe, and two tugboats that were towing the vessel off the country’s eastern coast.

The ship had collided with the Singapore-flagged Hafnia Nile on Friday, causing both ships to catch fire.

Officials in Singapore say all crew members from both ships were rescued.

Malaysia’s coastguard said Ceres I had left the location immediately after the collision that caused a blaze and injured at least two crew members.

The incident happened about 55km (35 miles) north-east of the Singaporean island of Pedra Branca, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) said.

The head of Malaysian coast guard’s search and rescue team, Zin Azman Mohamad Yunus, has not explained why the São Tomé and Príncipe-flagged tanker tried to flee, but added that further investigations would be carried out.

The authorities in Singapore said after around 40 crew members were rescued from the blazing ships, around 26 of them remained on Ceres I to tackle the fire.

The Singapore-flagged Hafnia Nile, was reportedly carrying naphtha, a highly flammable type of petroleum.

The cause of the collision is still unclear. Singapore maritime authorities said ship traffic in the busy waterway was unaffected.

Kamala Harris delivers first speech since Biden exit

US Vice President Kamala Harris

US Vice President Kamala Harris hails Joe Biden’s “unmatched” legacy as she delivers her first speech following the president’s withdrawal from the 2024 election race.

A growing number of Democrats, including Biden, have now endorsed Harris to become the party’s nominee in the November 5 election.

Harris has heaped praise on Biden, saying that he has achieved much worth celebrating during his time as president.

“Joe Biden’s legacy of accomplishment over the last three years is unmatched in modern history,” the US vice president said in her first remarks since Biden dropped out of the 2024 election race.

“In one term, he has already surpassed the legacy of most presidents who have two terms in office.”

The US vice president says she is going to meet with staff in Wilmington, Delaware, as her push for the Democratic presidential nomination gets into full swing.

“One day down. 105 to go,” she wrote on social media. “Together, we’re going to win this.”

Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov has been asked by reporters about the Kremlin’s view on the possibility of Harris becoming the Democratic Party’s nominee.

Peskov responded: “There have been some statements which were full of unfriendly rhetoric towards our country.” He did not specify any comments.

Other than these remarks, Peskov said the Kremlin has “not recorded anything she’s done in terms of our bilateral relations either positively or negatively”.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had said previously that Moscow would prefer Biden over Trump, calling the Democrat “more predictable”.

Harris still needs to formally win the Democratic presidential nomination, but as we’ve been reporting, she has emerged as the clear frontrunner.

That has thrust the 59-year-old’s positions on key global issues under scrutiny.

The District Chief Executive for Sekyere Kumawu, Samuel Addai Agyekum, has caught the attention of President Akufo-Addo for his selfless service for the people of Sekyere Kumawu.

Complementing the position of the president was the paramount chief of Kumawu Traditional Council, Barima Sarfo Tweneboah Kodua, who also hailed the DCE for bringing development to the said district.

President Akufo-Addo and the paramount chief were speaking at the commissioning of the ultramodern 120-bed capacity Kumawu government hospital at Kumawu recently.

President Akufo-Addo said: “I kept faith in him by nominating him (Addai Agyekum) for this position in 2017 and again in 2021. I saw all those qualities in Agyekum and I chose him.

“Many are the reports and commendations that I’ve heard about him, and I must say that he is really representing me well in this district.”

Akufo Addo was emphatic that the Kumawu DCE, who also doubles as the Secretary to the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives in the region, is a leader who always works assiduously to accomplish any task he is given.

President Akufo-Addo further told the function that he was very confident Agyekum would continue to lead a united Kumawu to contribute to growth and development of Kumawu.

Barima Sarfo Tweneboah Kodua on his part said, “Hon. Samuel Addai Agyekum cannot be discounted when it comes to the reconstruction and completion of the Kumawu District Hospital.

“Mr. President, while I commend your government and your good self for keeping to your promise, which has led to this event today, let me also be quick and commend this young man – I mean our DCE. He did a yeoman’s job.

“He was always on me and my chiefs trying to find the best way forward in completing this hospital. The way he kept energising the youth who had lost hope about the completion of this hospital is amazing, and we thank you for giving him to us.”

Barima Sarfo Tweneboah Kodua described the DCE as an affable politician, a team player, respectful, competent and hardworking, adding that he (Addai Agyekum), together with the current Member of Parliament for Kumawu constituency, “simply makes the work easier for Nananom.”

He, therefore, thanked President Akufo-Addo, for giving them such a competent DCE as a leader of the District.

Samuel Addai Agyekum was appointed by President Akufo Addo and has been at post since 2017. He has supervised the transformation of the district with emphasis on harnessing the potential economic resources in the locality.

Among some of his achievements are the discovery and development of the Bomfobiri Wildlife Sanctuary, construction of a two-storey office complex for the Sekyere Kumawu District Assembly; construction of a Police Station at Akotosu and Bodomase, construction of a Fire Station at Kumawu and above all seeing to the final completion of the Kumawu Government Hospital.

Under the government’s flagship programmes, the DCE has successfully supervised the construction of 1000 metric tons of Grain Warehouses and ancillary structures at Wonoo and Akotosu, construction of Technology Solution Centre under 1D1F at Temate.

Ashanti NDC women’s wing working committee inaugurated

Madam Gloria Hudzi, the Ashanti Regional Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has charged women to intensify their campaign to ensure that victory in this year’s election becomes a mere formality for the party.

The Women’s Organiser explained that the region still remains the decider of every election, hence the need for them to embark on a door-to-door campaign by selling the 24-hour economy and the Women’s Bank, which is to be established to support women.

The occasion was the inauguration of the Regional Women’s wing working committee in Kumasi, on Friday.

Madam Hudzi said that the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government had collapsed every sector of the economy with women being hard hit, and hence the need for them to wake-up and support the NDC and John Dramani Mahama to rescue the country.

Mr Andrews Augustus Nana Kwasi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party stated that about 80% of the monumental projects in the Ashanti region were initiated by the NDC.

According to him, elections are about development, for which the Ashanti region should compare the development under the NDC and NPP, before casting their ballots.

He indicated that the previous NDC administration was able to build the new Kejetia Terminal within four years, but the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) have, for the past seven and half years, failed to complete the rest of the project.

He noted that the NDC would be declared victorious in the upcoming December 7, 2024 general elections based on its developmental projects and programmes across the length and breadth of the country.

He emphasised that Ashanti region remains the decider of the upcoming general elections and expressed the hope that the NDC will make huge strides in terms of votes.

The NDC Ashanti Regional Chairman stressed that nothing could stop the NDC from winning the general elections to continue their good works especially in the Ashanti region.

According to him, it is not only the NDC that needs change of government, but Ghanaians as a whole, and promised the voter population that NDC would do whatever it takes to protect the ballots and their votes.

Foods That Are Good Sources of Water

0

How Much Water Is in Your Diet?

Drinking liquids isn’t the only way to stay hydrated. You typically get about 20% of your water each day from food. You can get even more if you eat certain things. And there are benefits to taking in water through food: You absorb it more slowly and get nutrients along the way.

Cucumbers

They’re 95% water and low in calories. They also may help fight inflammation and might even slow the aging process. They’re great in a salad or as an edible scoop for dips.

Carrots

This one may be a surprise. Crunchy and dense, you wouldn’t think they’re full of water. But they are, around 90%. And they’re loaded with beta carotene and other antioxidants that protect you against cancer and keep your heart strong. Add them to a salad or have them as a snack.

Zucchini

This green squash that grows like a weed in the South is 95% water. It has antioxidants — things that help protect your cells from damage — including two that are good for your eyes. It’s great grilled or roasted in the oven.

Iceberg Lettuce

It’s 95% water, and while it has fewer nutrients than some other greens, it does give you a few things. Besides fiber — which helps keep you regular — it also delivers potassium, manganese, iron, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorous — all essential minerals that can help keep you healthy.

Spinach

Here’s a green leafy veggie that can be used raw in a salad or sauteed as a side dish. It doesn’t have quite as much water as iceberg lettuce, but it’s loaded with vitamin K, folate, manganese, and magnesium, plus antioxidants that help fight inflammation and cancer.

Celery

It has a satisfying crunch and is still 95% water. It’s also low in calories and high in vitamin K, folate, and potassium. And celery is good for digestion because it has lots of fiber and helps prevent inflammation in your digestive system.

Cauliflower

You may not have thought of this one, but it’s 92% water. It’s also rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, and other essentials. And it has other nutrients that may help lower cholesterol and protect you against cancer. But don’t boil it — roast it to keep in the nutrients.

Soup

No surprise here: The whole idea of soup is that it’s largely liquid. But it’s a great way to get fiber and nutrients as well — and there’s one for every taste. Make broth from fish, chicken, or vegetables, and add almost anything to it, from beans to greens and meats — even pasta. Homemade chicken soup is not only good for hydration, but it also might help fight the common cold.

Tomatoes

They’re 95% water, and they can add flavor and sweetness to a sandwich or salad. They have lots of antioxidants, including one called lycopene that may help fight cancer. They also can help lower “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and may boost your overall heart health.

Watermelon

This summer treat is a good way to stay hydrated when it’s hot. It’s sweet, but low in calories, and can quench your thirst, thanks to its 91% water content. Like tomatoes, it has lots of lycopene, an antioxidant that may protect your cells from sun damage and help your skin.

Strawberries

They’re 91% water and also have lots of antioxidants, especially flavonoids — chemicals that help your brain stay sharp and healthy. Eat them for dessert with a bit of whipped cream, or put them in a summer salad.

Yogurt

It’s 85% water and a great source of protein and electrolytes that make your heart and other organs work the way they should. It also has bacteria (probiotics) that are good for digestion and help keep you regular. Have some with a few strawberries to get even more water in your afternoon snack.

Oatmeal

Made with water or low-fat or skim milk, it can help keep you hydrated and give your heart a boost. It can lower your cholesterol levels and may even help ward off type 2 diabetes and breast cancer. It’s a healthy way to start the day — as long as you watch the added sugar.

Grapefruit

That sour bite can sure wake you up in the morning. Plus, at 90% water, it will help keep your body hydrated. It’s also full of fiber and nutrients, especially vitamin C, which helps your immune system and can protect your cells against damage. But it can cause problems if you take certain medications, so check with your doctor first if you take any prescription drugs.

About Time To Know, Who Sold And Bought State Assets

0
Feature

Between 2007 and 2008, the opposition NDC went on a propaganda campaign, branding the NPP government, led by H.E. J.A. Kufuor, with various acts of corruption. One of the lies executed was the printing of fake accounts of some NPP appointees, with huge deposits, which were shown to Ghanaians as proof of corruption. Gullible, as most Ghanaians were, they accepted the lies and turned against the NPP.

Today, with a few months to elections, the opposition NDC members are at their trade again.

Inclusive is the alarming cry that the NPP has sold state assets to its members. This was made to seem like an act, never committed in Ghana before andwas classified among the deadly mortal sins.

It was all about the SSNIT and Rock City deal, where the former was going to offload 60% of its shares in four hotels it owns to the latter, owned by an NPP guru.

The NDC was able to incite Organised Labour to take up very hypocritical stance against the deal. Hypocritical, because worse things in respect to sale of state assets, have been done by the NDC, but which Organised Labour always pretended, it never heard off.

In 1994, Ghana was the second largest gold producer in Africa, and the NDC sold all our 55% shares in Ashanti Goldfields to foreign investors for $400 million, which did not reflect in our economy. No one rose up against the NDC. Today, Ghana is the largest gold producer in Africa and sixth in the world, yet we have nothing to show for it, because we do not decide how the profits should be shared and get nothing, but only collect land rent.

SSNIT established the Social Security Bank (SSB) in 1977 with workers’ contributions to the pension fund. In 1994, SSB had three shareholders; with SSNIT having 65,835,000 shares (92.40%); Government of Ghana had 3,776,250 shares (5.30%) and Bank of Ghana had 1,638,750 shares (2.30%), making the state, 100% shareholder in SSB. That year, SSB’s profit after taxation was ¢7.3 billion ($875 million), with total assets at ¢176 billion ($21 billion). This was certainly a vibrant and successful bank in the country, in 1994.

Then in 1995, the NDC government started selling off the SSNIT’s shares in SSB, to the private sector. And today, the name of the bank has been changed to SociétéGénérale-Ghana with SSNIT having only 19.36% shares. Organised Labour did not rise up in 1995 to fight for the only SSNIT investment that was constantly bringing in lots money into the pension fund. Today, because of this recklessness, virtually nothing from the bank go into the pension fund.

As at 2023, Société Générale-Ghana made GH¢425 million ($38 million) as profit after tax and its total assets stood at GH¢8.5 billion ($759 million). This is how the bank which took over from SSB is faring, today. SSNIT could have been, better managers of the bank.

Today, when the Board of Trustee of SSNIT, took the best decision to turn around failing investments by allowing on board, a strategic investor, the NDC and Organised Labour are up in arms. It is been speculated that by 2034 or so, SSNIT will not be able to pay out pensions. Let us pray this does not happen or the NDC and Organised Labour will have to answer for this.

At the end of 1999, the Bank for Housing and Construction (BHC), another vibrant bank, recorded ¢3 billion ($491 million) as profit and had a deposit base of ¢86 billion ($14 billion). In January 2000, however, the NDC government liquidated this bank and sold all its assets, to NDC gurus, cronies and people fronting for them. Only the bank’s co-operate union challenged the NDC on the liquidation of BHC, Organised Labour kept mute.

This and many are what the NDC did to Ghana and were able to go unchallenged, because for some reason it may seem Organised Labour is in bed with that party. So whenever the NPP wanted to chart a course that will benefit the worker, the NDC will raise false alarm and turned, Ghanaians Organised against government.

As if these were not enough, the NDC recently came out and told Ghanaians about a number of state lands the NPP had sold out. It was very alarming, and gullible as Ghanaians are, people took it all in, hook, line and sinkerand the condemnations begun.

With headlines, like‘Ghana on Sale’, the following are included in the speculations by NDC as having been sold by the NPP.

  1. Mental Hospital in Asylum Down, Children’s Park, Parks and Garden’s among others. 2.BostalInstitute, Ghana Prison Service, Roman Ridge, gone. 3. Supreme Court judges’ homes at Cantonments also gone, and the judges are now seeking injunction in court. 4. W.E.B. DuBois Centre gone. 5. Teshie Shooting Range land sold. Prison barracks land also gone. 6. Airport Shell that was used for a restaurant has been taken away. The land has been sold.7. They just repossessed the Foreign Affairs land Atta Mills took from them. 8. Prison Service land at Roman Ridge. And they concluded by saying, “they’ll all face the firing squad when a 2nd Rawlings comes.” Nonsense! As if Rawlings did not kill people to acquire ill-gotten wealth.

The ones I find very ridiculous are the Teshie Shooting range, which is an important military property; the Airport Shell, which belongs to an NDC guru, unless he had given it away. But what can be done to that classroom-size restaurant if as the allegations stated, it has been taken away? And the Foreign Affairs land at Airport, where the head office of the ministry is situated. How possible can its land be sold?

Then on July 16, 2024, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources came out to clarify the issues. Ghanaians then got to know that it was the NDC which largely sold-out state lands.

In a process begun on August 16, 2012 by NDC’s deputy minister, Hon. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, and concluded on November 29, 2016, two acres of land belonging to the Parks and Gardens was sold to a private entity, Wontirim Company Ltd on the 50-year leasehold.

On August 4, 2014, Frimps Oil Ltd, an Oil Marketing Company, (OMC), applied for the grant of 0.9 acre of portions of land belonging to the Judicial Service, in Cantonments, Accra. On June 3, 2015, Frimps Oil Ltd was offered 1.39 acres of land which included the 0.9 acre it applied for. The OMC accepted the offer on June 6, 2015 and on June 13, 2015, it was granted a fifty-year lease on the land. This land is currently under litigation after the Nana Addo administration, asked the offer to be withdrawn.

The Prison Service land at Roman Ridge was originally given to the then University College of the Gold Coast, now University of Ghana in 1946. Later on, on June 28, 1950 it was allocated to the Prison Service.

Since the 1960’s portions of the land have been carved out to private developers. In 2005, the Kufuor Administration leased portions of the land to one Prof. Appiah-Adu. There was a protracted dispute between Ghana Prison Service and Appiah-Adu over this, until March 21, 2023 when the latter received judgment in his favour.

The land occupied by Du Bois Center, was acquired for government purposes on December 20, 1897. It is currently occupied by Du Bois Center, Lands Commission and Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources. No one has registered interest in acquiring that land.

So, from this and most likely many more to come, it is rather the NDC which sold most of state lands to its members and cronies. We must not forget the 4.5 acres of land at Ridge, a prime area, which was leased to Rawlings by the Mahama administration at GH¢10.00 per year for ninety years, that is GH¢900.00 in total was paid for a 4.5-acre land in a prime area in Accra. What more evidence do Ghanaians need, to know who the culprit is, when it comes to ‘stealing’ state lands and assets? The NDC is the culprit and yet it will shift blame by convincing Ghanaians that the NPP was at fault.

I will therefore, request that government through the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and other ministries, departments and agencies, should come out with all state assets sold out to private entities from 1981 to date. The PNDC era must be included because PNDC and NDC are one and the same.

Whiles at it, the veil must be lifted to know all those behind the purchases and how they benefited. Ghanaians will want to know, why Ashanti Goldfields was sold out, and who benefited or are benefiting from this transaction. Ghanaians will want to know who were behind the sale of SSNIT’s Social Security Bank (SSB), a high performing bank and who are benefiting from this. The Ghanaian worker must be more interested in this and all other SSNIT assets which have been sold. And Ghanaians will want to know who benefited from the sale of Bank for Housing and Construction’s assets.

In fact, Ghanaians must make the government nationalize AngloGold Ashanti and Société Générale-Ghana. The most important one is AngloGold Ashanti, for how can we be the number one gold producer in Africa and yet we have no say in our gold? Any government who thinks well of the people will never accept such a thing.

Unfortunately, we are where we are because of the NDC, who have a convincing way of making others stand accused of the crimes it committed. The success and progress of Ghana is never on the agenda of the NDC and Ghana must know the truth in all sales of state assets, including during this regime. It is about time.
