Fidelity Bank Bags Over GH¢1.1bn Profit After Debt Restructuring Shocks

0
Atta Yaboah Gyan - Deputy MD, Fidelity bank Ghana

Fidelity Bank Ghana, with over 80 branches in Ghana, since its inception in 1998, has affirmed its status as one of the major institutions, having made a profit of GH¢1.17 billion in 2023.

The feat is coming on the heels of a huge loss of GH¢518 million in 2022, following an aggressive debt restructuring plan announced by the Ghanaian government, which brought unprecedented challenges.

The Deputy Managing Director of the Bank, Mr. Atta Yeboah Gyan, interacting with media practitioners in Kumasi on Friday, August 16, 2024 noted that the bank has, however, emerged stronger against the restructuring exercise and attributed its strength to resilience of products and effective risk management qualities and digital innovation at the core of its strategy.

Sharing the bank’s vision and success story towards a sustainable future at the forum, Mr. Gyan announced that the vision is to make Fidelity Bank a household name and impact the Ghanaian economy.

He disclosed that Fidelity Bank is the largest privately-owned Ghanaian bank and the fifth largest bank in Ghana, in terms of assets, with total assets standing at GH¢17.22 billion at a 25% growth.

The shareholder funds increased by 119% at GH¢1.44 billion, while the capital adequacy ratio (CAR) also improved from 16.8% in 2022 to 20.9% in 2023, following a strong capitalisation.

He stressed that the bank’s achievement is not just a testament to growth but also to its commitment to serving the people of Ghana.

As a result, Fidelity Bank has expanded financial access across Ghana and opened 81 branches, including 16 in Ashanti region, in a bid to bring banking closer to its customers.

He said the bank’s innovative Smart Account and extensive agency network, which boasts of over 6,000 agents nationwide, have empowered over 1.5 million people and thus driven deposit growth to over GH¢500 million.

The Deputy MD mentioned also that the bank’s WhatsApp banking assistant, Kukua, has revolutionised customer interactions to serve over 200,000 users and offered a range of services from account opening to bill payments.

The bank, Mr. Gyan said, has made a significant impact in agriculture, which holds immense potential for the economy of Ghana and is, therefore, poised to ensure that this sector reaches its full potential and for which it recently launched the GreenTech Innovation Challenge (GTIC), a significant initiative aimed at propelling Ghana’s agricultural sector towards a more sustainable future.

He said through GTIC, an extension of the Fidelity Young Entrepreneurs Initiative, the bank will award over GH¢1 million in grant funding to support innovative solutions addressing critical challenges within the country’s agricultural value chain.

The bank has, through its partnership with the MasterCard Foundation, launched the Bridge-In-Agriculture initiative, which focusses on supporting women entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector. Since the beginning of 2024, this initiative has created 119 new jobs sustained 3,209 existing jobs and positively impacted 2,483 smallholder farmers, of which 72.9% of the beneficiaries are women.

Another area where the bank has made major strides, Mr. Gyan said, is the bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, which are centered around education, economic empowerment, health, gender equality, and climate change in line with the Sustainable Development Growths under which the bank has impacted the lives of 6,409 individuals, with a balanced representation of both men and women in 2024, with a total CSR spend for the year amounting to GH¢1.1 million.

According to him, the bank planned to impact 15 schools in the next 5 years since 2022 with infrastructure and non-infrastructure support nationwide to which it has expanded to include Abbeykope D/A Basic School and Nyameyekrom D/A Primary, joining the list of schools like Mamprobi Ebenezer 4, Douse D/A School, Okogyeasuo M/A JHS in the Ashanti region, and FodomeKodzeto MA School that have already benefited from our orange impact initiative.

Miss South Africa contender to run in Nigeria Show after nationality row

Chidimma Adetshina

A would-be Miss South Africa who quit the pageant amid a row over her nationality said in a video she has agreed to run for the Miss Universe Nigeria title.

The 23-year-old model, who was born in South Africa to a Nigerian father, withdrew from Miss South Africa “for the safety and wellbeing of my family and I” after a backlash that exposed anti-foreigner sentiment in South Africa.

Organisers of the Nigerian contest immediately invited Chidimma Adetshina to join their final on August 31, saying it was a chance to “represent your father’s native land on an international stage”.

“Thank you so much for this opportunity, and I look forward to participating in Africa’s most prestigious beauty pageant, Miss Universe Nigeria,” Adetshina replied in a video on Instagram.

The social media outcry focused on the nationality of her father, even though South Africa grants citizenship by birth to anyone born in the country after 1995 to a South African parent or permanent resident.

As the furore drew in government ministers and other personalities, the home ministry opened an investigation that ended up raising questions about the nationality of Adetshina’s mother, who was said to be a South African of Mozambican descent.

It uncovered “prima facie indications” that her mother might have stolen the identity of a South African woman.

It also fanned rivalry between the netizens of Africa’s two economic powerhouses.

South Africans did not appreciate the reaction of Nigerian afrobeat superstar, Burna Boy, when the eventual winner of Miss South Africa was announced on August 10 as a white woman, Mia le Roux.

“So after all that …” he posted on X with laughing emojis.

I rejected GHAMRO’s GH¢500 royalties -Bisa Kdei reveals

Bisa Kdei

Ghanaian highlife artist, Bisa Kdei, has expressed his disappointment with the royalties from Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO). His rants come as part of recent backlash from musicians to GHAMRO over the amount of money offered as royalties.

In an interview with Angel FM, Bisa Kdei revealed that he found the amount unacceptable and instructed the representative not to contact him again.

According to the musician, GHAMRO called to offer GH¢500 as royalties for his popular songs, ‘Mansa’ and ‘Brother’.

“The last time they called me….Someone called me, I remember for Mansa and Brother Brother (songs), they offered GH¢200 or GH¢500. I told them not to call me again. I thought the money was huge because I had hit songs then,” he stated.

According to him, receiving such a small amount from GHAMRO proves that the organisation does not take the affairs of its members seriously.

I feel like they don’t take us seriously because if they give Fancy Gadam that kind of money, what about the older artists who are doing music as their work and are waiting for royalties? It hurts. Are they trying to tell me that this is what I deserve for a whole year? I don’t understand. I’m in pain right now,” he said.

Ghanaian rapper Maradona Adjei Yeboah, popularly known as Guru, has been disqualified by the University of Ghana’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC) to contest the student body’s election to become its president.

According to a communique issued by the SRC, Guru does not satisfy the conditions that qualify him to contest the position.

In a vetting report issued on August 16, 2024, the SRC’s Vetting Committee indicated that during their vetting on August 11, 2024, they assessed three treasurer aspirants, three general secretary aspirants and five presidential and vice presidential aspirants. Out of these, some failed to meet the criteria for the election.

“Upon a careful examination of the documents submitted, it was discovered that two candidates from the presidential and vice presidential aspirants, indicated their non-residential status, which they further confirmed during vetting the process,” the report says.

The report states that Maradona Adjei Yeboah (Guru) and Lawrence EdinamEgleh are non-residential students, for which reason they are not permitted to contest the election.

According to the UG SRC Constitution, “A student shall not be qualified to any executive office unless: he is qualified to contest under his hall’s constitution, except that a provision requiring a student to be in at least his third year in this University shall not disqualify such a person from contesting for any office under this article.”

It also states that a person who does not reside in any of the halls of the university shall not qualify to occupy a leadership position.

“The committee after a critical assessment of the qualification criteria, noticed that Maradona Adjei Yeboah and Lawrence Edinam Egleh do not meet the criteria stated in Article 30 (1) (a) of the UG-SRC Constitution and therefore do not qualify or are not eligible to contest for an Executive Officer position of the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC).

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra

Thailand’s king has endorsed Paetongtarn Shinawatra as the country’s new prime minister two days after parliament elected her.

Paetongtarn, 37, was sworn in on Sunday, becoming the youngest prime minister of Thailand.

She nabbed the spot just days after Srettha Thavisin was dismissed as premier by the Constitutional Court, a judiciary central to Thailand’s two decades of political turmoil.

Her approval as the country’s new premier by King Maha Vajiralongkorn, a formality, was read out by House of Representatives Secretary Apat Sukhanand at a ceremony in Bangkok.

Paetongtarn won by nearly two-thirds in a House of Representatives vote on Friday, no stranger to the process coming from a family in Thai politics as the daughter of divisive former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and niece of Yingluck Shinawatra, Thailand’s first female prime minister.

The second female prime minister of Thailand and leader of the Pheu Thai Party has the strong support of senior party leaders and coalition partners, said Al Jazeera’s Tony Cheng, reporting from Bangkok.

As part of the royal endorsement, Paetongtarn knelt in front of a portrait of the king and delivered a short speech.

Paetongtarn inherits a country struggling economically and which has waning support for her party.

Switzerland offers cash prize to get munitions out of lakes

0
Munitions are buried beneath Lake Brienz

Tourists enjoying the picture postcard views of lakes Lucerne, Thun or Neuchatel might be surprised to learn what lies beneath those pristine alpine waters.

For years the Swiss military used the lakes as dumping grounds for old munitions, believing it could be disposed of safely there.

In Lake Lucerne alone there are an estimated 3,300 tonnes of munition, and 4,500 tonnes in the waters of Neuchatel, which the Swiss air force used for bombing practice until 2021.

Some munitions are at depths of 150 to 220 metres, but others in Lake Neuchatel are just six or seven metres below the surface.

Now, the Swiss defence department is offering 50,000 francs (£45,000) in prize money for the best idea to get it out.

The best three ideas for a safe and environmental solution to retrieve the munitions will share the prize pot – but the salvage operation is expected to cost billions.

Double danger

The fact that so many rounds were dumped in Swiss lakes – Brienz being another of them – has been known about for decades, though people have asked questions about safety more recently.

Retired Swiss geologist Marcos Buser, who advised the government on this topic, wrote a research paper ten years ago warning of the dangers of the dumps.

The munitions pose two risks, he said. First, despite the fact it is underwater, there is still a risk of explosion, because in many cases “the army did not remove the fuses before dumping the munition”.

Then there’s water and soil contamination – there is a real chance that highly toxic TNT could pollute the lake water and the sediment.

The Swiss government acknowledges that factors including poor visibility, magnetic iron and individual ammunition weights “represent major challenges for environmentally friendly ammunition recovery”.

Protests across Venezuela as election dispute goes on

Demonstrations have been held across Venezuela

Opposition supporters have gathered across Venezuela to protest against Nicolas Maduro’s disputed victory in last month’s presidential election.

Opposition leader María Corina Machado joined thousands of protesters in the capital, Caracas, and urged them not to be afraid.

Ms Machado, who had been in hiding after being accused of insurrection, said there was nothing above the voice of the people, and that the people had spoken.

Police and the army were deployed in force as supporters of Mr Maduro also held a demonstration.

“We won’t leave the streets,” Ms Machado told protesters, with many of them waving copies of election records from their voting stations as proof of victory.

Ms Machado, who was banned from running in the election, had called for nationwide protests to intensify pressure on Mr Maduro to concede.

Some demonstrators seemed determined to carry on.

Mr Maduro has insisted he won a third six-year term, but the opposition released tallies it said showed its candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez, winning by a wide margin.

Speaking from an unidentified location, Mr Gonzalez said it was time for an “orderly transition”.

At his rival rally, Mr Maduro mocked Mr Gonzalez, saying he was “living in a cave”.

The electoral commission, controlled by allies of Mr Maduro, has refused to release detailed results, but declared he won with 52% of the vote. Independent observers said it lacked transparency.

Israeli strike kills 7 members of same family, as US push for ceasefire and hostage deal

Palestinians mourn over the shroud of six children who were killed

Seven members of the same family were killed in an Israeli airstrike in central Gaza on Sunday, medical officials said, as Secretary of State Antony Blinken travels to Israel to push for a ceasefire and hostage deal.

At least seven people were killed, including six children and their mother, in an Israeli airstrike on a home in Deir al-Balah on Sunday, according to the Al-Aqsa hospital. The children’s father was injured, a hospital spokesperson said.

Muhammad Awad Khattab, the children’s grandfather, told CNN: “They were taken by surprise when a missile hit them and completely destroyed their apartment.”

“What did they do to deserve this?” he added. “What resistance did they have?”

As the war rages in Gaza, Blinken is traveling to Israel to, in the words of a senior administration official, “continue to stress the importance of getting this [deal] done.”

The fresh strike in Gaza comes just a day after an Israeli strike killed at least 15 people, all from the same famly, in the al-Zawayda area of Deir al-Balah in central Gaza. Nine children were among those killed, according to Gaza Civil Defense.

In a statement Sunday, the Israeli military said forces continue to operate in Khan Yunis and Dir al-Balah. It said the military struck “targets in the area from which the launches were fired toward Nirim (Friday) and destroyed loaded launchers in the area of Khan Yunis.”

The Israeli military had ordered new evacuation orders in north Khan Younis and east Deir al-Balah on Friday, further reducing the boundaries of the Israeli-designated humanitarian zone.

He expressed HopeXchange’s heartfelt appreciation to the government and people of the USA, for their remarkable contribution to the Ghana Health sector through ASHA/USAID grants.

According to him, for more than a decade HopeXchange Medical Centre has been one of the beneficiaries and a partner of the American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA) grant Programme of USAID under a unique partnership.

He disclosed that USA – leading faculty members from Yale University, Mayo Clinic and others are actively involved in research, transfer of knowledge and American-inspired hospital Standard Operation Practices (SOP).

This, he noted, has made HopeXchange a hub of medical training in the Ashanti region, as ASHA also facilitates taking critical medical assistance to remote areas.

He stated that a crowning achievement of the ASHA/USAID partnership is the construction of a state-of-the-art maternal and Child Health Centre (MCHC), which, when completed, will contribute immensely to the provision of needed health care for mothers and children, especially neonates in the country.

He said the Centre will also advance the training of health care professionals and students in maternal and child health and that through the generous support of ASHA/USAID, HopeXchange would soon take delivery of a mobile clinic to augment its medical outreach.

He stated that the mobile clinic is a major investment in the health and well-being of the entire region and enables HopeXchange to reach the under served and remote communities, particularly those who are poor, needy and vulnerable, ensuring that no one is left behind because of distance or lack of access.
