Comptroller General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has suspended an Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II (ASI II), Okpravero Ufuoma, for allegedly soliciting financial gratification from a traveller.

In a statement, a spokesman for the Service, Kenneth Udo, said the officer’s conduct, captured in a video circulating on social media, does not reflect the values and ethics of professionalism upheld by the NIS.

Udo said the Service received the viral video with the caption, ‘This is how Immigration officers treat tourists in Nigeria’.

Comptroller General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, also condemned the alleged misconduct in the strongest terms, saying that it undermined the ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing service standards.

She, however, assured the public that the officer has been indefinitely suspended pending the outcome of disciplinary procedures, in accordance with the law and Public Service Rules.

Nandap stressed that the officer’s act is disgraceful and not a representation of the commitment of the service to hospitality, reception and courtesy.

Govt suspends plan to sell 50kg bags of rice to civil servants

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

The Federal Government has suspended the plan to sell subsidised 50kg bags of rice to civil servants for N40,000.

Leadership reports that the decision was made known in a circular titled, ‘Withdrawal of Internal Circular on Sale of Subsidized Rice to Public Servants’, signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs (Human Resources Management Department).

The circular was addressed to Directors and Heads of Departments. “I am directed to refer to our internal circular in the Ministry (Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs) of 1st August, 2024 on the above subject matter and to inform you that the Internal Circular is hereby withdrawn.

“Further details will be communicated in due course. Please bring the contents of this internal circular to the attention of staff in your respective Departments and Units for their information and proper guidance,” the circular reads.

The previous memo from the Ministry, dated August 1, and signed by Mrs Jaiyesim Abimbola Aderonke, Director of Human Resource Management, had outlined the procedure for civil servants to purchase the rice.

However, no reason was provided for withdrawal of the plan, which certainly will leave many civil servants who had registered for the subsidised rice in a state of uncertainty.

DAILY POST recalls that the initial plan was announced by the Minister of Information, Idris Mohammed, stating that the government intended to mitigate the effects of the current food crisis by offering 50kg bags of rice at a subsidised rate to civil servants in Abuja.

Take Advantage Of Amnesty On Uncustomed Vehicles – Customs, GRA

0
Chief Revenue Officer, Vehicle Valuation Unit, Customs Technical Services Bureau (CTSB), Justice Njornan Magah

Many Ghanaians are said to be driving around town in vehicles that haven’t undergone proper customs processes and in effect have eluded the payment of import duties owed to the state. Some of these vehicles are said to have come through unapproved border routes while others have overstayed their permitted period for temporary importation.

Per the Customs law, users of uncustomed vehicles when apprehended by customs will have to cough up 3 times the duty payable including the duty itself to retrieve their vehicles.

Until the end of September, however, the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority has gracefully waived off the penalties on uncustomed vehicles and thus urging users of such vehicles to regularize customs procedures for their vehicles before the grace period elapses.

Speaking to Solomon Anderson on Eye on Port, a Chief Revenue Officer at the Vehicle Valuation Unit of the Customs Technical Services Bureau (CTSB), Justice Njornan Magah Yadjayime said this amnesty forms part of the initiatives lined up to improve tax education during the celebration of tax month in July and August.

“So assuming that you are driving for a meeting and you are caught on the way by the Preventive Unit of Customs and then they pick the vehicle from you, they issue a detention receipt after which it becomes seizure if you do not appear within 30 days. If you come at any time and you want to claim the vehicle, you will pay the duty plus the 300% penalty.

So for this period, where we have the amnesty, we know that you have committed an offense but you are being pardoned so you can just come for it at the Customs headquarters, Regional Customs Office or any Customs Office with a letter covering the vehicle and then they will process it. It will go through ICUMS and then you have the vehicle to go to DVLA and then you register it,” the Customs Officer detailed.

Mr. Yadjayime also cited a peculiar case where some vehicle owners acquire uncustomed vehicles auctioned by some state institutions who enjoy exemptions. However, he clarified that these exemptions do not extend to the ordinary user.

Such individuals, upon acquisition of these vehicles must regularize customs procedures for the vehicle and pay the requisite duty before using it. He encouraged these ministries, departments and agencies to help facilitate customs processes for such vehicles before parting ways with them.

The Supervisor in charge of the Vehicle Valuation Unit at the Customs Technical Services Bureau said from October 1, his outfit will begin rigorous nationwide unannounced inspection of vehicles to clamp down offenders.

He said the customs division is equipped with the tools necessary to uncover and outwit the schemes of offenders who may try to tamper with the chassis of the vehicle and falsify documents, among other means.

Such a vehicle when apprehended will undergo a 30-day period of detention after which it moves to the seizure stage for another 30 days and then confiscation if the individual is unable to regularize custom procedures and pay the duty.

He revealed that intelligence gathered points to the eastern frontier as a loose end for the smuggling of such uncustomed vehicles.

The Commissioner General together with JICA is going to deploy some technology along the corridors to tract the entry of smuggled vehicles, he said.

Israel revokes diplomatic status of Norwegian envoys

Israel has revoked the diplomatic status of eight Norwegian diplomats serving the occupied Palestinian territory.

“There is a price for anti-Israel behaviour,” said Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz on Thursday, citing Norway’s recognition of Palestinian statehood and its backing of an International Criminal Court (ICC) case implicating Israeli leaders in alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity as reasons for the move.

The Norwegian ambassador was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem on Thursday, where he was informed that the diplomats, all based in Tel Aviv, would have their accreditation revoked in seven days and their visas annulled in three months.

“This is an extreme act that primarily affects our ability to help the Palestinian population,” said Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Espen Barth Eide in a statement, warning that the decision would have “consequences” for its relationship with the Israeli government.

Norway is still considering its response to the situation.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Thursday that mentioned “serious statements by senior Norwegian officials” that were viewed as anti-Israeli.

In an official note delivered to the Norwegian embassy in Tel Aviv, the ministry also accused Norway of “one-sided policies and statements” since the October 7 Hamas-led attack in southern Israel that preceded Israel’s offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Spain, Ireland and Norway announced their decision to recognise a Palestinian state back in May, drawing a strong rebuke from Israel whose leaders have repeatedly spoken out against Palestinian statehood.

Israel also ordered Spain’s consulate in Jerusalem to stop offering consular services to Palestinians from June 1, with Katz saying at the time that it was a “punitive” measure.

Teen planned ‘explosives and knives’ attack at Swift concert

Taylor Swift

Austrian security officials say a 19-year-old arrested on Wednesday was planning to kill “a large crowd of people” in a suicide attack at a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna.

Officials say the teen – who had previously pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group (IS) – confessed that he “intended to carry out an attack using explosives and knives”.

Swift’s three sold-out shows at the Ernst Happel Stadium have been cancelled. More than 195,000 people had been expected to attend.

Local media have also reported that the 19-year-old, the main suspect out of three, had stolen chemicals from his former workplace.

The Kurier newspaper, citing sources, reported that he used to work at a metal processing company in his home town of Ternitz, and that he had made progress in building a bomb.

The outlet also reported that he had planned to drive a car into the crowd expected to gather outside the stadium.

Security officials at a news conference on Thursday did not comment on where he got the chemicals, but public security chief Franz Ruf told reporters that chemical substances and technical devices found at the main suspect’s house showed “concrete preparatory actions”.

The head of Austria’s Directorate for Protection of the State and Intelligence (DSN) Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, said weapons were seized from the main suspect’s house, and that “his aim was to kill himself and a large crowd of people either today or tomorrow at the concert”.

Mr Ruf added the teen had posted a video online confessing to the plot, quit his job at the end of last month and told people that he had “big plans”.

‘Why I started smoking’ – Rema

Rema

Afrobeats star Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has opened up about how the death of his dad affected his childhood.

The ‘Calm Down’ crooner said the death of his father left him the responsibility of catering for his family at a young age and in the process, he was “forced to sell” his childhood.

In a candid chat with GRM, Rema, 24, said he wants to “feel young again.”

He said he recently started smoking cigarettes in a bid to feel “free and break some rules again.”

Rema lamented that despite being an adult before deciding to smoke, people still criticise his decision because he’s a celebrity.

He said, “I really wanted to feel like a child again… I feel like I grew up too fast. Life switched up on me crazy when I lost my dad and my brother. The weight was just on my shoulder and forced me to sell my childhood to provide for my family.

“God willing, everything happened well, it happened fast. And with fast fame, comes fast maturity. It’s just like never ending level of seriousness. So much adults. So much meetings. I didn’t even rolled with my age mates.

“So this project [‘HeIs’], I just want to be a child. And it’s coming out. It’s not me forcing it out. It just sparked in my spirit. I just want to feel young again. I just to be a rebel. You know, kids make mistakes and it’s acceptable. But when you’re a teenager and you make the same mistake your peers would make, everyone will come for you just because you’re in the spotlight.

“I know people who smoked a cigarette when they were 13 and I’m 24 smoking a cigarette because I just want to feel free and break some rules. All my life just feel so planned and scheduled. I just got tired.”

Bangladesh Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus

Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus has been sworn in as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government.

Yunus, 84, took oath at a ceremony in Dhaka on Thursday night after weeks of student-led protests forced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee to neighbouring India.

“I will uphold, support and protect the constitution,” Yunus said during the ceremony, adding that he would perform his duties “sincerely”.

The key tasks for Yunus now are restoring peace in Bangladesh and preparing for new elections.

Bangladesh’s figurehead President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath to Yunus for his role as chief advisor, which is the equivalent to a prime minister, in presence of foreign diplomats, civil society members, top businessmen and members of the former opposition party at the presidential palace in Dhaka.

No representatives of Hasina’s party were present. Sixteen other people have been included in the interim Cabinet with members drawn mainly from civil society and including two of the student protest leaders. The Cabinet members Yunus as interim leader were chosen in discussions this week among student leaders, civil society representatives and the military.

Hasina quit on Monday after several chaotic weeks that began in July with protests against a quota system for government jobs that critics said favoured people with connections to Hasina’s party.

Miss South Africa contestant pulls out amid nationality row

Chidimma Adetshina is a 23-year-old law student

The Miss South Africa beauty contestant at the centre of a nationality row has withdrawn from the competition, saying she took the decision for her and her family’s safety and well-being.

Chidimma Adetshina’s announcement on Instagram came a day after a preliminary investigation by the home affairs department found that her mother may have committed “identity theft” to become a South African national.

Ms Adetshina – a 23-year-old law student – said she was born in Soweto, a township next to Johannesburg, and grew up in Cape Town.

In media interviews she explained her father was Nigerian and her mother was a South African of Mozambican descent.

For weeks her roots have been at the centre of a social media storm, with some South Africans questioning whether she was a South African.

As the row escalated, the organisers of the Miss South Africa pageant asked the home affairs department to conduct an investigation ahead of the event on Saturday.

In a statement on Wednesday, the department said it had so far found that the identity of an “innocent” South African mother “may have been stolen” by Ms Adetshina’s mother.

However, Ms Adetshina “could not have participated in the alleged unlawful actions of her mother as she was an infant at the time”, the department said.

It added that it was conducting further investigations with the aim of pressing criminal charges, while also obtaining legal advice “on the implications of the alleged fraudulent activity on Adetshina’s citizenship status”.

In an Instagram post, Ms Adetshina did not respond to the findings, but said she had taken the “difficult decision” to withdraw from the competition.

She said she was grateful “for all the love and support” she had received, and wished the remaining contestants the best.

“Whoever wears the crown, represents us all,” Ms Adetshina added.
