Editorial: 2024 elections and the role of the media

0
Editorial

The media is essential to democracy and any election process is impossible without them. A free and fair election is not only about the freedom to vote and the knowledge of how to cast a vote, but also about a participatory process where voters engage in public debate and have adequate information about parties, policies, candidates and the election process itself, in order to make informed choices.

This year is an election year and already the various political parties and presidential candidates have started campaigning by selling their messages to Ghanaians. The media has a prominent role to play before, during and after the 2024 general elections.

The media should be committed to the fortification of democracy, as they are tasked with the solemn duty of informing the public, scrutinising political processes and holding those in power accountable. In the prelude to the elections, it is our duty to provide comprehensive coverage of political campaigns and offer a platform for diverse voices to be heard.

Come Election Day, our role transforms into that of watchmen, standing vigilant to report on the unfolding events with accuracy, impartiality and timeliness. The responsibility to deliver real-time updates, monitor polling stations and report any irregularities falls squarely on the shoulders of the media.

It is through our lenses that the world witnesses the democratic expression of the Ghanaian people.

Beyond the ballots being cast and the victors declared, the duty of journalists endures. In the aftermath, our role pivots to one of accountability. We scrutinise the conduct of elected officials, investigate claims of electoral malfeasance and ensure that the promises made during campaigns are upheld.

A vigilant press is a necessary check on the corridors of power, fostering transparency and accountability in the post-election landscape.

However, this noble duty comes fraught with challenges. Journalists must navigate political biases, avoid sensationalism and withstand external pressures that seek to compromise journalistic integrity.

As we approach the 2024 elections, the imperative for media houses to invest in training, technology and safety measures for journalists cannot be overstated. Ensuring the safety and well-being of reporters on the ground is paramount to fostering an environment where the truth can be uncovered without fear or favor.

In the face of polarised political landscapes, The Chronicle calls for responsible reporting that transcends partisan lines. We implore journalists to uphold the highest ethical standards, providing citizens with information that empowers rather than divides.

Our commitment to fostering an informed electorate transcends individual affiliations and we encourage our colleagues across the journalistic spectrum to echo this commitment.

As the countdown to December 7 2024 begins, we have to recognise the gravity of our role in shaping the narrative of Ghana’s democratic process. We stand resolute in our dedication to the principles of journalistic integrity, transparency and accountability.

Biden is no different than Trump

0
Biden (L) and Trump

Joe Biden is a lie and a liar.

That opening sentence is meant to sting. More importantly, it is meant to shatter the happy caricature that the sitting US president is an antidote – in character, nature and temperament – to his predecessor, Donald Trump.

Biden tried to promote the big lie that he is the antithesis of Trump late last week in a speech that was billed as the opening salvo of his, until now, somnolent re-election campaign.

A cliché-ridden appraisal in The Guardian of Biden’s practised performance praised him for “taking the gloves off” in a “fired-up” evisceration of the likely Republican nominee for president come November.

“Biden tore into his predecessor Donald Trump as never before. He brimmed with anger, disdain and contempt,” a Guardian correspondent wrote approvingly. “If Biden was seeking to jolt his half-conscious 2024 re-election campaign into life, this may have done the trick.”

Rather than a “jolt” of urgency and authenticity, Biden’s halting, 33-minute soliloquy reflected his fraudulent core and mendacity and the blatant double standards that govern the establishment media’s coverage of two supposedly disparate candidates who, truth be told, are more alike than unlike.

When Trump “tears” into opponents with “anger, disdain, contempt” and signature vulgarity, he is routinely cast as the authoritarian villain, incoherent with animus and rage, who is motivated by one impulse above all: vengeance.

When Biden does the same – minus the profanity – he is applauded for dispensing with the obsolete straitjacket of decorum in a necessary burst of genuineness that “plenty” of fretting Democrats will welcome as an agreeable departure from the “grandfatherly figure predisposed to give people the benefit of the doubt”.

So, just like all those rabid, “deplorable” Republicans, most Democrats apparently prefer and are aching to see more of Mr Hyde than Dr Jekyll in their man, as well.

Still, it was Biden’s construct that America confronted an existential choice between democracy and dictatorship that reeked of his doddering Trump-like hypocrisy and deceit.

“Today, we are here to answer the most important of questions: Is democracy still America’s sacred cause?” Biden asked. “I mean it. This is not rhetorical, academic or hypothetical.”

If Biden’s injunction was even remotely sincere, then he or his surrogates ought to answer the following questions that are – to borrow a phrase – not rhetorical, academic or hypothetical. Oh, and I mean it.

What kind of “democracy” encourages, enables and endorses another so-called “democracy” to commit genocide – yes, genocide – against an imprisoned people with no means of escape or refuge from the “killing rage”?

What kind of “democracy” protects and defends another so-called “democracy” when it enforces a siege depriving millions of Palestinian civilians of food, water, medicine and fuel – triggering rampant starvation and disease?

What kind of “democracy” supplies another so-called “democracy” with the spigot of weapons and ammunition to turn the bulk of a densely populated strip into Mars – barren and uninhabitable?

What kind of “democracy” dismisses the will of a clear majority of its citizens who demand that their president work to end the “killing rage” by negotiating an immediate and lasting ceasefire?

The answers confirm that America’s phantom “democracy” is not a “sacred cause” but a jejune myth – disfigured and corrupted beyond repair long ago.

The nadir of Biden’s pious posturing was his anguished, hyperbolic indictment that Trump did “nothing” to prevent an insurrectionist mob from storming the Capitol despite having been urged to “act” and “stop” the madness.

“The entire nation watched in horror. The whole world watched in disbelief and Trump did nothing,” Biden said. “It was among the worst derelictions of duty by a president in American history.”

Well, Mr President, millions of enlightened Americans and much of the planet have “watched in horror” and “disbelief” as you and your craven administration rejected – again and again – calls to act and end the murderous madness engulfing the Middle East.

Instead, you have fuelled the horrors and made sure that they go on and on until the “killing rage” is spent – no matter the thousands of children who have been killed, maimed, orphaned, traumatised or remain entombed beneath the mountain-range-like rubble.

That, sir, is not just a “dereliction of duty”. It is an affront to decency that shocks the conscience and renders Trump’s litany of crimes misdemeanours by comparison.

Biden’s address mirrored language he used once before when he excoriated Trump for having “created and spread a web of lies about the 2020 election. He’s done so because he values power over principle.”

But Biden has weaved his own “web of lies” because he also “values power over principle”.

Biden’s lies are more lethal and pernicious.

He has feigned “concern” about the human toll of Israel’s “indiscriminate” bombing. In what amounts to a “concern” comedy, Biden and complicit company have “urged” Israel to show “restraint”.

“Far too many Palestinians have been killed. Far too many have suffered these past weeks. And we want to do everything possible to prevent harm to them,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters way back in early November.

So much for that bit of performative nonsense, Mr Secretary.

America’s proxy is either not heeding Biden’s carefully calibrated qualms or knows they are designed to give the public impression that he is “concerned” when the self-proclaimed “Zionist” US president doesn’t give a hoot privately that the number of killed and maimed Palestinians surges every hellish day.

Biden’s duplicitous diplomatic tango includes trafficking in the familiar fib that he really, really wants Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and complicit company to stop all that ugly, war-crime talk about cleansing Gaza of Palestinians so fanatical Israeli settlers can steal more homes and land to “make the desert bloom”.

Heavens, no. Biden is “committed” to a “two-state” solution. Meanwhile, Netanyahu is busy ensuring there will never be a “two-state solution” by erasing one of the proposed “states” from the map – literally.

There is no “daylight” between Joe Biden and Donald Trump when Israel invokes its “right to defend itself” however it wants to, wherever it wants to, for as long as it wants to.

Any liberal or progressive in any quarter who claims otherwise is a liar, too.

INEC begins verification of political parties’ status

0
Prof Mahmood YakubuI, NEC boss

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has verification of the status of political parties in the country, says Hawa Habibu, the Director, Election and Party Monitoring of the commission.

Ms Habibu said this when she led INEC’s Election and Party Monitoring Team on a visit to the National Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Ganduje.

She said the visit was part of the commission’s annual verification of political parties.

“It is a constitutional mandate of the commission. Basically, we are supposed to find out and issue notices where political parties are not in compliance with the constitutional provisions, as to the number, structures of the party in terms of office in Abuja, auditing of their finances and other issues.
“The team will go round to verify the offices with our forms to give us the structure of the party as to whether the Electoral Act provision of minimum of 24 members of different states of the federation and the FCT has been compiled with,” she said.

She added that the team would also verify the party’s audited account. “The last time we had this verification was in 2019 and there was COVID-19 in 2020. We had so much activities in 2021 and 2022.

“And it has become pertinent that we have to do so now to verify political parties to ensure that the compliance status are in order. These are basically our assignments,” she said.

Responding, Mr Ganduje commended INEC for effectively handling the country’s electoral process in spite of challenges.

Mr Ganduje, while speaking on violence before, during and after elections, said the electoral umpire could not be blamed for election violence, adding that politicians must be held responsible.

“I know one of the biggest problems of INEC in conducting elections is insecurity. Everyone will say INEC, but it is the politicians,” the APC national chairman said.

He described the visit as historic and a day of reckoning and accomplishment in terms of the relationship between INEC and political parties, particularly the APC.

More trouble for Emefiele as govt amends fraud charges

0
Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele

More trouble appears to be in the offing for former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele as the Federal Government has again amended the charges filed against him.

The charges, bordering on forgery, conferring of corrupt advantages and criminal breach of trust, have been increased from six to 20.

The Federal Government had initially filed 19 charges bordering on N6.9 billion procurement fraud against Emefiele but later pruned it down to six charges involving misappropriation of N1.2 billion, which he is currently standing trial on.

In the amended charge, Emefiele was accused of obtaining the sum of $6.2 million by pretence by falsely representing the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF.

The government said the offence was contrary to Section 1(1) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006, and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.

The charge reads, “That you, Godwin Ifeanyi Emefiele male, adult, and Odoh, Eric Ocheme (Still at large) on or about the 8th day of February 2023 in Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court knowingly obtained by false pretence, the sum of Six Million, Two Hundred and Thirty Thousand United State Dollar ($6,230,000.00) by falsely representing that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation vide a letter dated 26th January, 2023 with Ref No. SGF.43/L.01/201 requested the Central Bank of Nigeria to provide a contingent logistic advance in the sum of $6,230,000.00 “in line with Mr. President’s directive” which representation you knew to be false and you thereby committed an offence.”

He was also accused of conniving with one Eric Ocheme who has been at large to commit forgery.

Clearing Agents in Ghana Wary of Existential Threats

0
President of CUBAG, Nana Fredua Agyemang Ofori-Atta and President of ACHAG, Yaw Kyei on Eye on Port

Some activities of Shipping lines operating in Ghana remain the subject of backlash in Ghana’s ports and logistics sector. Clearing agents operating at the various ports are calling on government to exert some authority over the lines in order to protect the businesses of citizens.

Recently, the presidents of two of Ghana’s freight forwarding associations: Association of Customs House Agents, Ghana (ACHAG) and the Customs Brokers Association of Ghana (CUBAG), intimated that when some of these seemingly harmless activities are left unchecked, they could morph into existential threats to the local industry.

Mr. Yaw Kyei (ACHAG) and Nana Fredua Agyemang Ofori-Atta (CUBAG) registered their displeasure on the Eye on Port TV program.

They alleged that some shipping lines, in an attempt to vertically integrate and take control of the entire supply chain, have somehow managed to engage in customs house brokerage which is supposed to be a preserve of the locals.

“They want to pick the goods, load on board vessels, bring to port of discharge, clear them and deliver to customers’ destination – this so-called end to end service is an existential threat and in an industry that employs thousands, if government will sit aloof and let this thing go that way, it doesn’t bode well for anybody,” Mr. Ofori Atta lamented.

“When shipments get to Tema here, they have a funny way of registering a local company with the participation of a local person and they will continue the processing in their names,” Mr. Kyei added.

The CUBAG President also called for government to compel the lines to apply the Bank of Ghana published exchange rates for the purposes of paying for shipping fees.

“The shipping lines charge exchange rates that are way above the nominal rates the Bank of Ghana published for us every Tuesday. For a private person importing to sell, when astronomical rates are slapped on them, they have no choice, but to pay. But you know what? They will pass on the additional cost to the final consumer. One of the reasons prices keep going up – it is not helping our inflation,” he bemoaned.

“We met at the Presidential Summit and the governor of the Bank of Ghana says these are private companies, and they don’t regulate them and the rates published are just nominal. When you hear such things you realize you’re on your own” Mr. Ofori-Atta revealed.

He said the notion that these are private businesses in competition and importers are under no obligation to use them, is untenable and traders more or less do not have a choice but to use them for imports.

Nana Fredua, who is also the Secretary of the Committee of Freight Forwarding Associations said with a business that thrives on predictability, the unregulated application of exchange rates is serving a hard blow to customers who are already reeling under the general economic pressures.

He called for the legislation that backs the mandate of the Ghana Shippers Authority to be reviewed and strengthened to enable the authority regulate the industry.

One major existential threat pointed out by the experienced freight forwarding professionals was the so-called self-declaration policy that was proposed by government in 2023.

They contend that more harm than good will result from allowing untrained and unlicensed importers to do customs business and clear goods on their own. They said their contention goes beyond saving their jobs.

The President of ACHAG, Mr. Yaw Kyei explained that in addition to ordinary importers lacking the technical know-how to execute customs clearance procedures, opening up customs clearance to all could raise issues related to national security.

“We are not being selfish. We are just worried that where a lot of revenue is made, you want to open it up to locals and foreigners and you can’t track them?” he quizzed rhetorically.

They urged government to take a second look at this policy, and stick with the status quo of the careful selection of qualified professionals to carry out customs business which involves the collection of valuable government revenue.

The Ghanaian Chronicle
