Israel says 24 soldiers killed in Gaza in one day

The Israeli army says 24 of its soldiers were killed in Gaza on Monday – the deadliest day for its forces since their ground operation began.

That includes 21 reservists who died in an explosion likely caused by mines that Israeli forces had placed in two buildings to demolish them, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said.

It is thought a missile fired by Palestinian armed fighters hit a tank guarding the troops just beforehand. The IDF is investigating what happened. According to Gaza’s Hamas-run Health Ministry, 195 Palestinians have been killed in the past day.

The IDF’s chief spokesman, Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, said the reservists were killed in central Gaza at around 16:00 (14:00 GMT) on Monday – close to the kibbutz of Kissufim on the Israeli side of the border.

They were involved in an operation to allow for residents of southern Israel to safely return to their homes after tens of thousands were evacuated after the Hamas attack on 7 October.

The first funerals for those killed in the explosion have been held at Mount Herzl in a rainy Jerusalem.

The US and UK carried out additional strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen on Monday, marking the eighth round of attacks by the US military on the rebels’ infrastructure in just over 10 days, according to a joint statement.

They struck eight sites, according to the statement from the US and UK, which conducted the strikes, and Canada, the Netherlands, Bahrain, and Australia, which supported the attacks.

The latest strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen were “successful” and destroyed missiles, weapons storage sites and drone systems, according to a senior military official and a senior defense official.

The officials, who briefed reporters following the Monday afternoon operation, said the strikes “achieved the desired effect.”

It was a smaller number than the first joint operation on January 11 that struck over 30 Houthi targets. Monday’s strikes targeted a Houthi underground storage site and sites associates with Houthi missile and air surveillance, the statement added. President Joe Biden spoke to his British counterpart UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday, the White House said earlier in the day, about a range of topics including security in the Red Sea.

Aspirant Obiri Yeboah breaking the grounds at Asem school

Parliamentary Candidate for Subin constituency, Lawyer Kofi Obiri Yeboah last Saturday cut the sod for the construction of an Astroturf at Asem Cluster of schools Park for Subin constituents.

Mr. Solomon Lamptey of Wembley Construction Sports Company Limited, executing the project, has promised to complete the project in six months time.

Lawyer Obiri Yeboah said at the sod cutting ceremony that the proposed Astroturf project is part of efforts to give Subin constituency a befitting facelift.

The aspirant promised to provide three more Astroturfs for the constituency if he is given the nod in next Saturday’s primaries, to represent Subin constituents in Parliament.

He reiterated the promise to establish a GH¢700,000 Subin Co-operative Fund to offer loan facilities to constituents at no interest.

He has already provided a 33-seater bus for the Constituency Secretariat for their travels and called on the delegates to vote massively for him to ensure total change in the Subin constituency.

Otumfuo’s Mmamensenhen, Nana Osei Kwadwo, who graced the occasion called on delegates to support the bid of the aspirant.

At the sod cutting ceremony were Moslem community leaders, chiefs, Queen mothers and all the Assembly members from Subin constituency.

Constituents in Manhyia South Constituency have made a passionate appeal to delegates to vote massively for the incumbent Member of Parliament, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as Napo, to continue with the total developmental agenda of the area.

Maame Fremaah and Madam Ama Nkrumah of Dichemso and CPC, who presided over a press briefing at Ashanti Newtown (Ashtown) last Friday, emphasised that Manhyia South Constituency cannot afford to lose the Energy Minister as their legislator at this crucial time when he is bringing development to the constituency.

Joseph Dwumfour Junior aka Joe Waladi, leader of Volunteers for NAPO, speaking with the media

According to the constituents, their law maker is affable, supportive, selfless and a development oriented person who cares for the wellbeing of each and every person in the constituency.

“Napo is listening, irrespective of one’s status in society, be it the aged, needy or the vulnerable”.

The constituents reiterated that their MP is a unifier who does not discriminate against any constituent irrespective of one’s political lineage.

They entreated the delegates to renew his mandate to continue to serve the constituency and address their basic needs.

Mr. Joseph Dwumfour Junior, aka Joe Waladi, leader of the Volunteers for NAPO, in an interview assured the delegates to express their appreciation to the Member of Parliamenton January 27, 2024.

He indicated that the MP’s contributions to infrastructural and human resource developments and the construction of town roads within the area are unmatched.

Mr. Dwumfour said the call by the electorate in the constituency on delegates to renew Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s mandate is in the right direction.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is contesting the seat for the fourth time and would be having a face-off with Madam Helena Pinaman Owusu, the former constituency Women’s Organiser in the NPP Parliamentary primaries.

Dr. Freda Akosua Oheneafrewo Prempeh –Tano North MP

Constituents in the Tano North constituency of the Ahafo region have declared their support for the fourth bid of the Member of Parliament for the area, Dr. Freda Akosua Oheneafrewo Prempeh.

Mrs. Freda Prempeh polled 22,592 votes (54.18%) in the 2020 elections against 18,684 (44.81%) and 419 (1%) votes by the NDC and GUM candidates.

Constituents interviewed at Duayaw Nkwanta over the weekend said they prefer Madam Freda, aka “Obaa Noaa” to any other contestant.

They would not have any problem voting massively for the MP for the fourth time, if the delegates would see the need to give the MP the mandate to continue with her developmental agenda in the constituency.

Sampling views of the constituents, Mr. Victor Owusu of the New Zongo electoral area said nobody compares with the MP as far as projects for all the 25 electoral areas in Tano North constituency are concerned.

The proposed Fire Academy Training school under construction

He sees no reason why the MP should be replaced after all the good work she has done over the years.

Mr. Samuel Boateng of the Tromo Electoral area said the constituents cannot afford to have the various ongoing projects stalled, and called for endorsement of the MP to ensure the completion of such projects.

Mr. Boateng mentioned that the MP has endeared herself to the constituents by the numerous social interventions for the people.

These include; the construction of a proposed Fire Academy Training school, two Astroturfs at Duayaw Nkwanta, road constructions as well as about 130 boreholes and water projects spread across the 25 Electoral areas in the Tano North constituency.

He said the MP has, by all standards, contributed to the development of the constituency and mentioned roads, electricity, schools, public places of convenience and mechanised boreholes for all the electoral areas.

Mr. Yaw Asamoah, a Youth Organiser, Madam Cynthia Asieduaa, Margaret Acquah and Margaret Agyeiwaa (Zongo electoral area) all attested to the provision of projects in the constituency.

“Madam Freda Prempeh has done a yeoman’s job and needs the support of the delegates to ensure that development spread to all corners of the constituency”, the interviewees said.

The Importance of Eating Breakfast

0
Breakfast

. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It kickstarts your metabolism, balances your blood sugar, promotes heart health, increases energy and more.

  • Avoid sugary breakfasts. Instead, opt for a combination of protein, whole grains, healthy fats and vitamins.
  • Healthy breakfast ideas include Greek yogurt, whole-grain cereal, avocado toast, peanut butter toast or scrambled eggs with a side of fruit or vegetables.

A well-balanced breakfast is the key to starting your day off right

Everyone has heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day — but why exactly is breakfast essential? Starting your day with a nutritious meal jumpstarts your metabolism, providing fuel to your body and brain. Besides nutritional value, breakfast also contributes to mental alertness and physical performance. Learn the benefits of having breakfast — along with a few tips for a well-balanced plate — to help you tackle the day.

Why breakfast is the most important meal of the day

Eating breakfast can help improve your overall health and well-being, as well as improve your performance at work or in school. Various studies have found starting your day with breakfast has several benefits:

  • It encourages healthier eating: Those who eat breakfast are likely to consume more milk and less saturated fat than those who skip the meal. You’ll also be more likely to reach your daily recommended servings of fruit and vegetables.
  • Your blood sugar levels will be balanced: Breakfast helps your body break down glucose, or blood sugar, better.
Breakfast kickstarts your metabolism: You’ll burn calories throughout the day, which will help you avoid unnecessary weight gain.
  • Your energy levels will increase: People who eat breakfast experience an increase in physical activity compared to those who skip it. Moving your body helps prevent weight gain and fatigue.
  • Breakfast promotes heart health: Skipping breakfast can contribute to increased disease risk — not only high cholesterol but heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.
  • It stimulates the brain: Eating breakfast can stabilize your glucose levels and increase your ability to focus, reason and process information.

What happens when you skip breakfast? By skipping breakfast, you miss out on essential nutrients, like vitamins, minerals and fiber, which are important for a well-balanced diet. Additionally, people who skip breakfast are five times more likely to be obese than those who eat breakfast.

Tips for a healthy breakfast

Even if you decide to eat breakfast, one question still remains: what should you eat? You might think a donut and coffee will do the trick, but experts agree high-sugar meals do not provide the same benefits as a well-balanced plate.

Keep in mind that a good morning meal should include protein, whole grains, healthy fat and a fruit or vegetable. If you are wondering what you should eat for breakfast, here are a few suggestions:

  • Greek yogurt with nuts
  • Blueberries and whole-grain cereal
  • Avocado toast with fruit on the side
  • Scrambled eggs with vegetables
  • High-fiber toast with peanut butter

So when should you eat the most important meal of the day? While the exact time will vary based on each individual’s needs and schedule, a good rule of thumb is to eat within an hour of waking up.

Feature: Who Benefits From Ignorance And Distortions On British Togoland Question

0
Feature

Ultimately, no one will benefit from the ignorance, distortions, false propaganda and confusion on the British Togoland Question. It is, therefore, unfortunate that we in Ghana have cultivated the cynical and bad habit to describe anybody who speaks about the British Togoland Question as a secessionist.

British Togoland history is part of Ghana’s history. Can we talk about the history of Ghana and leave out the history of British Togoland? Simply put a secessionist is a person who wants to use force or unconstitutional means to secede or break away from a country. In that sense nobody talks, or should talk, about secession in Ghana because there is no basis for it. What is happening in Ghana right now has nothing to do with secession or secessionists.

In fact, secession is only in the mind of the oppressors and occupiers; the imperialist. Out of fear for the truth they use secession as weapon or tool to gag, harass and destroy innocent people. Let us look at the facts of the case.

The people of British Togoland were asked by the UN in a plebiscite in May 1956 whether they would like to join their territory in a UNION with independent Gold Coast (Ghana) or remain under the UN Trusteeship pending the determination of their political future. The majority of them voted for UNION and not integration.

At this stage it is important to point out that the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) had rejected integration recommended by the 1955 UN Visiting Mission to the Togolands and adopted Union.

In essence, this meant that the UNGA was, no doubt, totally aware of the differences between Union and integration before it decided to opt for Union. After the people of Togoland voted for Union the UNGA went ahead to express approval for Union not integration under UN Resolution 1044(XI) and invited Britain, the Administering Authority of British Togoland, to take such steps as were necessary to bring about the Union.

Unfortunately, Britain swerved the UN. Instead of establishing a Union, on the pretext of quelling a rebellion in Togoland (eg Alavanyo/Kpando crisis) she invaded, occupied and wrongly and forcibly integrated British Togoland with independent Gold Coast (Ghana) on March 6 1957 under the inappropriate and highly controversial 1957 Ghana Independence Act that did not have a single word or clause about the Ghana-British Togoland Union.

There is need to repeat that instead of a Union prescribed by UN Res. 1044(XI), Britain rather installed undesirable integration, which was rejected earlier by UNGA. Naturally and definitely the people of Togoland were very unhappy and aggrieved and who would not be in the circumstances? They felt cheated and short-changed and they, of course, protested.

In fact, they have been protesting since 1957. They want the Union they voted for on 9 May 1956 and approved by UN Res. 1044(XI) to be respected, accepted and installed.

That is all and it is as simple as that. No! They are not asking for separation or secession as their detractors would like us to believe. Why call this desire for genuine Union secession and insult the people of British Togoland as secessionists?

The reaction of successive governments, their officials and agencies to these harmless protests to seek justice has been rather surprising, shocking, undemocratic and baffling. The major indigenous political party in Togoland, the Togoland Congress, was banned and outlawed under the Avoidance of Discrimination Act.

This did not stop the protests. So the government of Dr. Nkrumah passed the Preventive Detention Act to drive into exile and/or arrest and imprison without trial the leaders of the Togoland Congress. Still the protests did not end.

So General Acheampong passed the Supreme Military Council Decree (SMCD20) in 1976 to further oppress, repress, humiliate, intimidate and prosecute the people. Despite its severity, repressive and draconian nature the decree could not stop the protests.

What it succeeded in doing was to drive the protests underground. That is the state of affairs as of now. The protests seem to be coming from underground and occasionally pop up. But SMCD20 has been a real democracy and free expression killer. It has completely killed freedom of association and of thought.

It must be repealed to allow for free movement and discussion on the Togoland issue. Even as of now, today, people are being humiliated, intimidated, arrested and prosecuted under SMCD20. But frankly the people of Togoland feel really cheated and short-changed and who can stop them from protesting if democratic and constitutional avenues are closed and denied them.

They also have blood flowing in their veins! So is it fair to call them secessionists? Calling them secessionists or visiting humiliation, violence and intimidation on them will not solve the problem because that action lacks logic and it is simply myopic.

Governments of Ghana, their officials and agencies must accept the fact that Britain committed a very serious political and legal error or blunder for turning a Union into forcible integration.

Ghana has been independent for 67 years and it must have the tolerance, courage, maturity and capacity to correct the blunder committed by Britain, peacefully and under due process.

Avoidance of Discrimination Act (ADA), Prevention Detention Act (PDA) and SMCD20 are terrible repressive laws,/ but they cannot stop the people of Togoland from protesting because the injustice meted out to them was just unfair and too much.

Governments of Ghana have realized the shortcomings of these pernicious laws and they have been accused of trying to use misinformation, outright lies and propaganda to reinforce them. This is done by brainwashing the people of British Togoland to feel that they are inferior and foreigners on their own land; that Trans-Volta/Togoland and Volta Region are the same as British Togoland which, of course, is not true.

Governments of Ghana are also strongly suspected to plant or sponsor countervailing dissident groups to use violence and undermine the unity and peace of the people and to serve as a pretext for sending security forces to British Togoland to harass, humiliate and intimidate the people.

Can you believe it that some of these countervailing dissident groups, led by people from outside British Togoland, claim that Western Togoland includes Anlo, Tongu and Peki areas which have always been part of the Gold Coast? Of course, this must be a deliberate ploy to distort, confuse and mislead the public.

The new trend is to make the Togoland issue a scarecrow to frighten people from exercising their voting rights at general elections. Certainly, these nefarious activities are the handiwork of desperate, ruthless people and they are not initiated by peace loving and law-abiding people of British Togoland.

It is quite clear that the people of British Togoland will never accept forcible integration that was imposed on them by Britain and, therefore, will not stop protesting despite the wicked laws, misinformation, distortions and false propaganda. Their cause is legitimate and just and, therefore, there is no time limit for the protests, of course, until the Ghana-British Togoland Union is legitimately established.

What the people of Togoland want is Ghana-British Togoland Union that they voted for on May 9 1956, and approved by UN Res. 1044(XI).

This Union should be properly established and should be backed by a Union Document or Agreement with clearly defined rights and obligations for partners (Ghana & British Togoland) in the Union.

Presently such a sane legal document does not exist, that is, to quote the Office of Legal Affairs of the UN and Ghana’s Attorney-General.

Those who claim a Union Document/Agreement/Deal exists should prove its existence. Conventional Wisdom is in support of the proper establishment of this legal Union. It is quite obvious that the establishment of this legal Union will strengthen rather than weaken Ghana.

Tanzania face Congo DR for a place in the knockout stages

0
Congo DR players

A place in the knockout stages of the Africa Cup of Nations is on the line as Tanzania face Congo DR at the Amadou Gon Coulibaly Stadium on Wednesday night.

With simultaneous kick-offs across Group F, the Leopards, on two points from their first two games, eye a win to stay in the driver’s seat, while the Taifa Stars face elimination if they fall short of a win.

Dismissed as Group F’s whipping boys before the tournament, Tanzania defied expectations and find themselves still in contention for a knockout berth heading into their final match.
Though their opening game was a chastening 3-0 drubbing by Morocco, a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Zambia kept them within touching distance of the other group contenders.

AFCON history has yet to witness a Tanzanian victory, with six defeats and two draws in their eight matches across three editions, including the current one, however, an historic win against DR Congo on Wednesday would present a golden opportunity to break that duck and reach the knockout stage for the first time.

Congo DR’s firepower, especially considering Tanzania’s struggles to keep opponents at bay, could well be the difference at the end of the game. As a result, the Taifa Stars might find themselves outgunned by the Leopards given the immense importance of this clash.

Zambia, Morocco lock horns in Group F

0
Morocco players

The Stade de San Pedro prepares to host a drama-laden finale to Group F in the Africa Cup of Nations as Zambia takes on Morocco on Wednesday night.

The Atlas Lions and the Chipolopolo lock horns in a clash where qualification for the round of 16 hangs in the balance.

Back on the AFCON stage after a three-edition absence, Zambia are still chasing their first win in the tournament since their improbable triumph in 2012.

Two opening draws, both by an identical 1-1 scoreline, have dampened the Chipolopolo’s roar, especially the latest disappointment against Tanzania in a game they were widely expected to win.

With two points from two games, the Southern Africans face a win-or-bust scenario against tournament favourites Morocco in their final group clash on Wednesday.

Failure to secure victory could see Zambia eliminated at the group stage for the third consecutive AFCON. However, the historical odds are stacked against them, having beaten Morocco only once in six meetings, losing three times and drawing twice.

Widely tipped as the tournament’s strongest contenders, Morocco are targeting their second AFCON title in history.

The Atlas Lions initially lived up to expectations in their opening match, dispatching group minnows Tanzania by a convincing 3-0 margin. However, their quest for a smooth run hit a snag in their second outing, a frustrating 1-1 draw against DR Congo.

Expect a cagey opening, with both teams wary of exposing vulnerabilities. Morocco’s quality and technical finesse might give them the edge, but Zambia will not go down without a fight. The Atlas Lions have dominated this fixture in the past, and we expect this trend to continue.

Namibia look to bounce back against Mali

0
Mali players

Namibia will face Mali at the Laurent Pokou Stadium on Wednesday in the final round of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations group stages.

The Brave Warriors kicked off their Nations Cup campaign with a surprise 1-0 victory over Tunisia, with Deon Hotto heading home the game-winner two minutes from normal time. They were, however, thrashed 4-0 by South Africa in their second group game and could have no real complaints about the result after managing just one shot on target throughout the match. Namibia sit third in their group with three points from an obtainable six and will advance to the knockout stages with a win on Wednesday while a draw could also suffice.

Head-to-Head

There have been six meetings between the two teams. Namibia have won just one of those games while Mali have won four times. There has been one draw between the two teams.

The two teams last faced off in an AFCON qualifying clash back in November 2020 which the Malians won 2-1.

Namibia’s latest result ended a three-game unbeaten streak and they will be looking to bounce back this week. They have, however, endured a tough run of results in this fixture historically and could struggle here.
