Pakistan Ex-PM Imran Khan jailed in state secrets case

0
Pakistan Ex-PM Imran Khan

Former Pakistani prime minister Imran Khan has been sentenced to 10 years in jail in a case in which he was charged with leaking state secrets.

Khan, who was ousted by his opponents as PM in 2022, is already serving a three-year jail term after being convicted of corruption.

He has called all the charges against him politically motivated.

The conviction under the secrets act comes the week before general elections in which he is barred from standing.

Former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi – vice-chairman of Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party – was also sentenced to 10 years in prison by the special court.

The so-called cipher case revolves around the alleged leaking of secret diplomatic correspondence sent by Pakistan’s ambassador in Washington to Islamabad when Khan was prime minister.

It relates to his appearance at a rally in March 2022, a month before he was ousted from power in a parliamentary vote of no confidence.

Israeli forces kill 3 Palestinian fighters in hospital raid

Israeli forces in hospital raid

Israeli forces have killed three members of Palestinian armed groups in a hospital in the occupied West Bank. CCTV footage showed members of an undercover unit disguised as medics and other civilians making their way through a corridor with rifles raised.

The Israeli military said the men were hiding in the Jenin hospital, and that one was about to carry out an attack. The Palestinian Authority’s ministry of health accused Israel of carrying out a “new massacre inside hospitals”.

Hamas, an armed Palestinian Islamist group which is fighting a war with Israel in Gaza triggered by its unprecedented attacks on Israel on 7 October, said the Israeli forces had “executed three fighters”, including one of its members

Another armed group, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, said two of those killed were its members and were brothers. It added that one of them had been receiving treatment at the hospital.

Since 7 October, Israeli forces have killed at least 357 Palestinians – militants, civilians and attackers – in the West Bank, while Israeli settlers have killed at least eight, according to the United Nations. Palestinians from the West Bank have killed at least 10 Israelis in attacks in the West Bank and Israel in the same period.

Vietnam, Philippines sign deals on security in disputed South China Sea

Philippine coastguard officers

Vietnam and the Philippines have agreed to cooperate on maritime security in the South China Sea, a conduit for $3 trillion of annual shipborne trade that China claims almost in its entirety.

The deals, signed during a state visit to Hanoi by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr on Tuesday, will see the two countries’ coastguards working together to prevent and manage incidents in the disputed waters.

The South China Sea is at the centre of territorial tussles between China, the Philippines and other countries. China claims almost the entire sea as its sovereign territory, while the Philippines, Vietnam and others claim various islands, islets, reefs and shoals.

Tensions between the Philippines, a United States ally, and China over the waters recently reached boiling point. At the end of last year, the Philippines accused China of “swarming” the Whitsun Reef off its coast. China, for its part, accused the Philippines of provocations in the Second Thomas Shoal waterway.

Earlier this month, China held military drills in the South China Sea as the US and the Philippines conducted their own joint exercises in the same waters.

Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, Registrar of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat

The Registrar of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, has assured residents in the Abuakwa South Constituency of his readiness to bring more developmental projects to the area.

According to him, the life of residents in the area could only improve when there are conscious development projects, a position that is motivating him to represent Abuakwa South in the next parliament.

“We will only see more of these developmental projects I have been doing in Abuakwa South, should we maintain power in 2024, that is why the NPP members need to involve themselves in the campaign and help Dr. Bawumia to win the elections”, he indicated.

He made the remarks in his maiden speech to delegates last Saturday, shortly after he was declared the Parliamentary Candidate (PC) to lead the area into the upcoming 2024 general elections.

Visual Arts tutor using painting to fight road crashes

0
Mr. Bismark Mborchie pointing to some of his work

Bismark Mborchie, a Visual Arts Tutor at Benkum Senior High School, is leading a creative initiative to enhance road safety education through concept drawings to visualize road safety education, providing a unique and engaging perspective for drivers and road users.

His motivation is borne out of worrying statistics provided by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on road safety in Africa, which Ghana is part.

According to the report, the African region accounts for 16% of global road traffic deaths despite having only 2% of registered vehicles in the world.

Despite a marginal reduction in road crashes in Ghana, a report by the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) disclosed that 1,086 people lost their lives in road crashes from January to June 2023.

In 2022, out of 14,960 reported road crashes 2,373 lives were lost, emphasising the urgent need for effective interventions.

Alarmed with these grim statistics, Mborchie, who was speaking in an interview with The Chronicle, advocated for a shift in approach, emphasising the effectiveness of visual communication.

The Benkum SHS tutor believed that visuals are easily understood and take a strong position in the mind more than words hence the need for a more impactful means of conveying road safety messages.

“A lot of public education on road safety has been going on but it seems road crashes continue to rise killing thousands of people yearly and maiming many others, affecting lots of families and deepening poverty”, he said.

To him, using Visuals Arts to communicate road safety is something that could go a long way to help bring the alarming situation to a considerable limit if not a final solution to the canker.

He has, therefore, affirmed his commitment and readiness to galvanize support to create more drawings and paintings on road safety, to erect them on the shoulders of major roads and lorry terminals across the country.

“As an artist, I believe in the power of drawings so my vision this year is to get support to buy materials needed to do more drawings and paintings to be erected on major roads and lorry stations”

He believes this intervention will help Ghana meet target 3.6 of the sustainable development goals (SDG), which enjoins countries to halve the number of deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents by 2030.

Display of some work of Mr. Bismark Mborchie

Bismark Mborchie, a Science student turned Artist, followed his passion to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts and Education, with a specialiSation in painting at the University of Education in 2015.

The impact of Mborchie’s dedication to visual arts education extends beyond road safety.

The Benkum SHS Visual Art Department has transformed into an exhibition center, showcasing beautiful paintings on various themes, including climate change, water protection, community harmony, and depictions of popular Ghanaians.

Looking to the future, Mborchie aspires to secure a platform to showcase these works globally, placing them on the international stage of arts.

Church of Pentecost elder campaigns for the less privileged in society

Elder Isaac Debrah Bekoe presenting of the items to an overwhelming old lady

An Elder of the Church of Pentecost (COP) at Akuapem Larteh, Elder Isaac Debrah Bekoe has appealed to Ghanaians most particularly those in sound economic standing to attend to the less privileged in society.

According to him, even though it is simple to be happy, it is however difficult to be simple when Ghanaians fall short of collectively contributing by any means possible to making the lives of others relatively meaningful.

To this, he humbly tasked leadership, members, and individuals in the various churches to take the responsibility of taking care of the needy and the less privileged in the churches and communities.

The Larteh COP elder who doubles as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of As I Grow, an  NGO based at Larteh made the call when he donated a piece of cloth each to widows, aged, and needy women in Larteh township.

The beneficiaries were drawn from the Roman Catholic Church, Presbyterian Church, Methodist Church and three local assemblies in the church of Pentecost in and around Larteh.

According to him, the gesture was his widow’s mite and part of an annual programme to make these individuals feel loved and important in society.

The young philanthropist, in an interview with The Chronicle, bemoaned how these widows, less privileged and aged are left with no hope and joy during festive occasions, thus his call to duty to put smiles on their faces.

Elder Debrah Bekoe Isaac noted that it is time for the church, individuals and leaders to find means of sustaining the joy and happiness of the less privileged in our society to increase life expectancy.

The widows and the aged expressed their profound gratitude to Elder Debrah Bekoe for supporting them and prayed for him to receive more financial blessings so that he would continue to support them.

Leaders Liverpool lock horns with Chelsea at Anfield

Premier League leaders Liverpool lock horns with Chelsea at Anfield on Wednesday night less than a month before the two teams renew hostilities in the EFL Cup final at Wembley.

Mauricio Pochettino welcomed Jurgen Klopp‘s side to Stamford Bridge for his first home game in charge of the Blues back in August last year when the two teams played out an entertaining 1-1 draw.

Liverpool marked their first match since Jurgen Klopp’s bombshell announcement to step down at the end of the season with an emphatic 5-2 home victory over Norwich City in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday.

Klopp’s men have extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 10 games, while they have only lost one of their last 17 matches over the last two-and-a-half months, but their mettle is set to be tested in back-to-back home league fixtures against Chelsea and Arsenal in the space of five days.

As has been a common theme at Chelsea this season, Mauricio Pochettino’s side lacked a cutting edge in the final third and squandered a number of chances in front of goal, before an inspired display from goalkeeper Dorde Petrovic thwarted Aston Villa’s late efforts to snatch a winner when the Blues ran out of steam in the final 20 minutes.

While Chelsea deserve the plaudits that come their way for putting together a 10-game unbeaten run at Stamford Bridge, there is little to be desired about their recent away form as they head to Liverpool having lost five of their last six games on the road in all competitions, conceding at least twice on five of those occasions.

Taking into account the aforementioned seven-game drawing streak between these two teams, another closely-fought contest could be on the cards on Wednesday, although Liverpool’s impressive record at Anfield will likely give them the edge.

Chelsea can ill-afford another frustrating spell in front of goal if they are to come away with a positive result at Anfield,

Vincent Kompany returns ‘home’ to face Manchester City

Vincent Kompany will return to his former stomping ground when he takes his Burnley side to the Etihad Stadium for a tricky test against reigning Premier League champions Manchester City on Wednesday night.

The two teams meet for the first time since the opening weekend of the campaign back in August last year when the Citizens cruised to a 3-0 victory at Turf Moor.

Manchester City players

Following a five-game winless streak without scoring a goal at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Man City managed to finally end their hoodoo on the white side of North London.

Pep Guardiola‘s men have certainty found their groove in trademark fashion heading into the second half of the season, as they have won nine and drawn one of their last 10 matches across all competitions.

Man City have received a triple injury boost as Guardiola has confirmed that Erling HaalandManuel Akanji and John Stones are all available for selection on Wednesday, although it remains to be seen whether the Catalan boss will decide to immediately name any of the trio in his starting lineup.

Burnley will have had 19 days to rest and prepare for Wednesday’s trip to Man City, with their last outing ending in disappointing fashion as they were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw at home to fellow relegation-threatened side Luton Town.

Kompany will hope that his side can frustrate the hosts and avoid making any crucial errors at the back while attempting to play an expansive brand of football against one of the best possession-based and goal-hungry teams around. However, Guardiola’s men should have few problems breaching a leaky Burnley backline, even if Haaland is not quite ready to make his impending return from injury.

Tottenham Hotspur take on London rivals Brentford

After exiting the FA Cup last weekTottenham Hotspur return to Premier League duty on Wednesday, when they take on London rivals Brentford.

While the Bees were enjoying their mid-season break, Spurs lost at home to Manchester City last time out and will now seek their first league win of 2024.

Brentford players

Having beaten their opponents on all five previous occasions they had met at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Spurs were ready to relinquish that streak and settle for an FA Cup replay last week, but the clubs’ fourth-round tie ultimately went the way of Man City.

A 16-year silverware drought goes on, so Spurs now turn their attention to staying in touch with the top four – and holding off challengers from behind, such as Manchester United, who held them to a 2-2 draw earlier this month.

Spurs have scored in each of their last 33 top-flight matches, which represents the club’s longest streak throughout their whole league history – and the fourth-best run by any side in the Premier League era.

They have also lost just one of their last nine league games against Brentford ahead of this week’s home contest, though that defeat did come in the equivalent fixture last season.

Although the personnel may be more or less the same, a ‘different’ Spurs side should tackle Brentford following their subdued defeat to Manchester City. As the Bees are rarely at their best away from home, Tottenham can take maximum points.

What is Sinus Pain & Ways to Relieve

0

What is sinusitis (sinus infection)?

Sinusitis is an inflammation, or swelling, of the tissue lining your sinuses. Sinuses are structures inside your face that are normally filled with air. Bacterial infectionsviral infections and allergies can irritate them, causing them to get blocked and filled with fluid. This can cause pressure and pain in your face, nasal congestion (a stuffy nose) and other symptoms. Sinusitis is also sometimes called rhinosinusitis.

What are sinuses?

Your sinuses are four paired cavities (spaces) in your head. Narrow passages connect them. Sinuses make mucus that drains out of the passages in your nose. This drainage helps keep your nose clean and free of bacteria, allergens and other germs (pathogens).

Types of sinusitis

We describe types of sinusitis based on how long it’s been going on (acute, subacute, chronic or recurrent) and what’s causing it (bacteria, virus or fungus).

Acute, subacute, chronic and recurrent sinusitis
  • Acute sinusitissymptoms (nasal congestion, drainage, facial pain/pressure and decreased sense of smell) last less than four weeks. It’s usually caused by viruses like the common cold.
  • Subacute sinusitis symptoms last four to 12 weeks.
  • Chronic sinusitissymptoms last at least 12 weeks. Bacteria are usually the cause.
  • Recurrent acute sinusitis symptoms come back four or more times in one year and last less than two weeks each time.
Bacterial and viral sinusitis

Viruses, like the ones that cause the common cold, cause most cases of sinusitis. Bacteria can cause sinusitis, or they can infect you after a case of viral sinusitis. If you have a runny nose, stuffy nose and facial pain that don’t go away after ten days, you might have bacterial sinusitis. Your symptoms may seem to improve but then return and are worse than the initial symptoms. Antibiotics and decongestants usually work well on bacterial sinusitis.

Fungal sinusitis

Sinus infections caused by fungus are usually more serious than other forms of sinusitis. They’re more likely to happen if you have a weakened immune system.

How do I know if I have sinusitis, COVID, a cold or an allergy?

Colds, COVID-19, allergies and sinus infections all have similar symptoms. It can be difficult to tell them apart. The common cold typically builds, peaks and slowly disappears. It lasts a few days to a week. Nasal allergies cause sneezing, itchy nose and eyes, congestion, runny nose and postnasal drip (mucus in your throat). They usually don’t cause the facial pain that sinus infections do. COVID-19 can cause additional symptoms, like fever and shortness of breath.

A cold, COVID or allergies can all cause sinus infections. You can test yourself or have a provider test you for some viral infections, like COVID-19 and the flu.

Symptoms and Causes

What are the signs and symptoms of sinusitis?

Common symptoms of a sinus infection include:

  • Postnasal drip (mucus dripping down your throat).
  • Runny nose with thick yellow or green mucus.
  • Stuffy nose.
  • Facial pressure (particularly around your nose, eyes and forehead). This might get worse when you move your head around or bend over.
  • Pressure or pain in your teeth.
  • Ear pressure or pain.
  • Bad breath (halitosis) or a bad taste in your mouth.

What causes sinus infections?

Viruses, bacteria, fungi and allergens can cause sinusitis. Specific triggers for sinusitis include:

What are the risk factors for sinusitis?

Some people are more likely to get sinusitis than others. Risk factors include:

  • Nasal allergies.
  • Asthma.
  • Nasal polyps(growths).
  • Deviated septum. Your septum is a line of tissue that divides your nose. A deviated septum isn’t straight, narrowing the passage on one side of your nose. This can cause a blockage.
  • A weakened immune system. This can be from illnesses like HIVor cancer, or from certain medications.

Is sinusitis contagious?

Sinusitis itself isn’t contagious. But the viruses and bacteria that can cause it are. Remember to follow good handwashing practices, avoid other people if you’re sick and sneeze or cough into your elbow.

What happens if sinusitis is left untreated?

You don’t necessarily need to treat sinusitis — it often goes away on its own. Very rarely, untreated sinus infections can lead to life-threatening infections. This happens if bacteria or fungi spread to your brain, eyes or nearby bone.

Whether your sinus pain is caused by a cold or a bacterial infection, here’s how you can relieve it:

  1. Try a saline nose spray. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to suggest a plain saline spray. Saline mist will ease sinus swelling and help break up the mucus that’s clogging your nose. You can use it up to six times a day without worrying about side effects. You can also make your own saline nasal spray. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how, and be sure that the water you use is distilled or has been boiled, not straight from a tap.
  2. Use a humidifier. Stuffy sinuses respond well to moist air. Using a humidifier, especially when you sleep at night, will help keep your sinuses open and relieve the pressure. You can also try sitting in a steamy bathroom after a hot shower or inhaling the steam from a pan of hot (not boiling) water for faster relief.
  3. Apply a warm compress. Ease swelling and throbbing with a warm, wet washcloth across your forehead, eyes, and cheeks.
  4. Use an over-the-counter (OTC) decongestant nose spray. These ease congestion and provide relief, especially early in a cold. You can get them as a nasal spray, liquid, or pill. If you use a decongestant nasal spray, don’t use it for more than 3 days. If you use it for longer, it can make your stuffiness worse, not better.
  5. Take OTC pain relievers. Acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen can relieve sinus pain. But never give a child or teenager aspirin for pain. It can be dangerous.

If you have sinus pain from a cold that isn’t better after 10 days, talk to your doctor. You may need an antibiotic or a different treatment.

What happens if sinusitis is left untreated?

You don’t necessarily need to treat sinusitis — it often goes away on its own. Very rarely, untreated sinus infections can lead to life-threatening infections. This happens if bacteria or fungi spread to your brain, eyes or nearby bone.

Diagnosis and Tests

How is a sinus infection diagnosed?

Healthcare providers diagnose sinusitis based on your symptoms and health history. A provider will check your ears, nose and throat for swelling, draining or blockage. They might use an endoscope (a small, lighted instrument) to look inside your nose.

A primary care provider may also refer you to a specialist, like an otolaryngologist (also called an ENT — an ear, nose and throat specialist).

Specific tests to diagnose sinusitis

Specific tests your provider might order to diagnose sinus infection include:

  • Nasal endoscopy.
  • Nasal swabs.Your provider may use a soft-tipped stick to get a fluid sample from your nose. They’ll test it for viruses or other germs that might be causing your symptoms.
  • In some cases, your provider might order a computed tomography (CT) scan to better understand what’s happening inside your sinuses.
  • Allergy testing. If you have chronic sinusitis, your provider may test you for allergies that could be triggering it.
  • Rarely, a provider may take a tissue sample from your nose for testing.

Management and Treatment

How is sinusitis treated?

There are many treatment options for sinusitis, depending on your symptoms and how long you’ve had them. You can treat a sinus infection at home with:

  • Over-the-counter (OTC) cold and allergy medications.
  • Nasal saline rinses.
  • Drinking plenty of fluids.

If symptoms of sinusitis don’t improve after 10 days, a provider may prescribe:

  • Oral or topical decongestants.
  • Prescription intranasal steroid sprays. (Don’t use nonprescription sprays or drops for longer than three to five days — they may actually increase congestion.)

Providers treat chronic sinusitis by focusing on the underlying condition. Treatments can include:

  • Intranasal steroid sprays.
  • Topical antihistamine sprays or oral pills.
  • Leukotriene antagonists, like montelukast.
  • Surgery to treat structural issues, polyps or fungal infections.

Are complementary and alternative therapies useful for treating sinusitis?

You might find acupressure, acupuncture or facial massage helpful in reducing symptoms of sinusitis, including draining, pressure and pain. Ask a provider if these therapies might help in your specific case.

Prevention

Can sinusitis be prevented?

Depending on the cause, there are a few ways to reduce your risk of getting sinus infections, including:

  • Rinsing your nose with saline (salt water) as directed by your provider.
  • Taking steps to prevent allergies. This includes medications, allergy shots and avoiding your known allergy triggers (like dust, pollen or smoke).
  • Using steroid nasal sprays if your provider recommends them.
  • Establishing good handwashingand other habits that reduce your risk of getting sick with infectious diseases.
  • Avoiding smoke. There are ways to help you quit smoking, if you do.

When should you see a doctor for a sinus infection?

You can usually care for sinus conditions on your own. But if you continue to have symptoms that concern you or if you get infections repeatedly, talk to a healthcare provider. They can help you understand your next steps.

When should I go to the ER?

Go to the nearest emergency room or seek medical attention right away if you experience symptoms of a serious infection, including:

  • High fever (over 103 degrees Fahrenheit/40 degrees Celsius).
  • Confusion or other mental changes.
  • Vision changes, especially if you have pain or swelling around your eyes.
  • Seizures.
  • Stiff neck.

Osofo Kyiri Abosom Promises Sharia Law

0
Osofo Kyiri Abosom

The founder of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Reverend Christian Kwabena Andrews, better known as Osofo Kyiri Abosom, has threatened to cause physical harm to his appointees who attempt to lootfrom state coffers, if voted to power. He has also pledged to retrieve and return to the nation all state lands and other properties stolen by political actors.

“I will cause physical harm to those who steal from the state, even if you have to lose your arm”,Osofo Kyiri Abosom threatened and added that: “Those who have taken state lands and other properties belonging to the state would be taken back.”

He issued the threat during an interaction with the media in Kumasi at the newly refurbished Prempeh Assembly Hall yesterday.

The event was attended by supporters of GUM, who came from Kintampo,Wenchi, Oti, Kwame Danso and Kumasi among other places.

Complementing the attendance were organisations such as Ghana Education Service (GES), Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners (GNASSM), Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), and GARAGES among others.

OsofoKyiriAbosom further described the 24-hour economy mantra of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) as concert.

KyiriAbosom argues that the 24-hour economy campaign of the NDC is not formidable, but rather a rhetoric, which cannot put food on the table.

“24-hour is a mere statement and it cannot be accomplished until companies are available”, he said.

The Prelate cum Politician, who is an Nkrumah-ist, expressed worry about the competence of the NDC and NPP.

He was particular about their inability to revive factories established by the first president of Ghana, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, citing the Akomadan Tomato factory, Kumasi Jute factory, Bolgatanga Meat factory and Aboso Glass factory among others, as prime example.

According to him, GUM believes state-owned enterprise have to be revamped, else Ghanaians will suffer.

He has, therefore, called on Ghanaians to do away with the NDC and NPP and vote for GUM. “Our leaders speak English, but they cannot put anything on the table. They are not helping us.

We need to change our mindsets…. Ghanaians have to refrain from the NPP and NDC….they are causing more harm than good,” he said.

In an address which was interlaced with Twi and English language, the flagbearer for GUM was of the view that the above mentioned two political parties come to power only to saddle Ghanaians with debt, which put Ghanaians in uneasy economic mess.

Launching a scathing attack on the candidature of Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, ahead of the 2024 General Elections, KyiriAbosom described the Veep as a ‘liar’ who has not been able to do what he promised Ghanaians.

Kyiri Abosom expressed worry about mounting taxes on Ghanaians by the government of the day, assuring that when GUM is voted to power, they would operate a duty-free port in Ghana, where government would not tax imported items.

He said “The taxes are too much. We will do away with all these taxes. We cannot continue in this situation… How can you tax us on electricity?”

Kyiri Abosom, who spoke on a wide range of issues, such as education, agriculture, employment and governance among others, where he critiqued and proffered solutions, described the Parliament of Ghana as unimportant, which is a liability to the good people of Ghana.

According to the flagbearer of GUM, when they come to power, each region would have one parliamentarian, a policy he believes would save state money.

He added that organisations such as teachers and farmers among others shall have a representative in Parliament.

The GUM leader further noted that his party would develop Ghana with indigenous resources, giving credence to barter trade where Ghana would use her resources to transact trade with other nations.

Touching on education, he accused government of poorly running the Ghanaian education system.

“If you take a look at the way and manner that we are educating our kids, nothing better is coming out from there.

“Our interest is to teach the children how to produce items. We want to teach them how to rear animals and other practices,” he claimed.

On social benefits for the aged, GUM, which appears to be a socialist inclined political party, told the media that when given power, they will introduce Old Age Benefits, a policy which would cater for anyone who attains the age of 60 years, whether the person is a government worker or not, he or she would be taken care of by the state.

“Anyone who attains the age of 60 years under the tenure of GUM would be given a social protection,” he assured.

Annul Yendi election -Habibata

0

One of the two aspiring parliamentary candidates of the Yendi constituency, Hajia Abibata Shanni Mahama, has petitioned the national office of the New Patriotic Party to declare last Saturday’s polls in the area invalid.

According to her, the process, which commenced freely and fairly ended with substantial irregularities, infractions, violations and, therefore, “lost its validity.”

The Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Hajia Abibata Shanni Mahama Zakariah, addressed her petition to the General Sectary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong.

Umar Farouk Aliu Mahama

She made ten requests, some of which are; that the party should make an order prohibiting the incumbent MP, Farouk Mahama, from holding himself out as the elected parliamentary candidate.

She also wants all complices sanctioned, and an order for fresh elections to be held in the Yendi constituency.

Below is the full petition details what transpired

Dear Sir,

PETITION OVER THE CONDUCT OF THE 2024 NPP PARLIAMENTARY PRIMARIES IN THE YENDI CONSTITUENCY

Respectfully, I write to bring the following critical issues concerning the chaotic conduct of the failed New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Primaries of the Yendi Constituency held on Saturday, the 27th of January 2024 at the Yendi Senior High School for your urgent attention and redress.

  1. By the Parliamentary Primaries Protocols for Incumbent Members of Parliament of the NPP issued by the Party on the 22nd of January 2024 with reference number NPP/HQ/PR/2024/01/22/GS/PP, the Party mandated the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) to supervise the Parliamentary Primaries and granted the Commission with the full responsibility for ensuring transparent, free and fair elections.
  2. That by the same protocols, the Party further prohibited party officials, government appointees, and other persons from acting in contravention of the Electoral Commission and the Guidelines referred supra.
  3. The Yendi Constituency Parliamentary Primaries had two contestants – Hon. Alhaji Farouk Aliu Mahama, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), and Hajia Abibata Shanni Mahama (Petitioner herein).
  4. There appears to be a grand ploy by some officers of the party to conspire with election officers and the incumbent MP to rig the elections in favour of the incumbent MP against the established democratic tradition of our great party, and the wishes of the delegates and the members of the party in Yendi.
  5. The key actors in the ploy included Alhaji Masawudu Osman (3rd National Vice Chairman), Alhaji Salifu Rashid C.O.P., the Northern Regional Organiser, Alhaji YussifToyibu, the Regional Treasurer, Mr. Fusheini Bawah Kpana, the regional Research and Elections Officer, Mr. Mohammed Adam Bantima Samba, the Northern Regional Chairman, some members of the Party Elections Committee, some officers of the Electoral Commission and the Security Service.
  6. On the Election Day, Saturday, 27th January 2024, voting started freely, fairly, and transparently. Voting ended at around 12:30 pm and they started sorting ballots at 2PM.
  7. A cursory look at the sorted and compiled ballot papers for each aspirant showed that I obtained the highest number of votes and was anticipating a declaration to that effect after due process had been complied with.
  8. It must be noted that the Regional and National Officers who had a grand agenda to rig the elections massed up at the collation to block our views and cover up their ploy.
  9. In pursuit of the grand agenda to rig the elections, an officer of the EC (Regional Storekeeper) tainted his fingers with indelible ink and was touching the sorted ballots (yet to be counted) in favour of me to taint them with a malicious intention of having them compromised and reclassified as rejected ballots.
  10. Further, whilst the counting of the ballots of Hon. Farouk Aliu Mahama was ongoing, the same EC Officer, picked the sorted, yet-to-be-counted ballots papers in favour of me and pocketed them. However, luck alluded him and he was caught red-handed.
  11. A member of my team went to complain to the Police and get the pocketed ballots removed from the pocket of the said EC Officer. The ink pad used to taint my valid votes was also retrieved. Despite the obstruction by some party officers at the scene, the pocketed ballot papers were also retrieved.
  12. By this time, ballots counted in favour of the incumbent MP, Hon. Farouk Aliu Mahama were around 213 with approximately less than 100 ballots yet to be counted in his favour.
  13. Sensing the danger that the incumbent MP was losing the elections, the supporters of the MP fetched my uncounted ballots, scattered them, and destroyed a significant number of them. This act infuriated my supporters who also picked the counted and uncounted ballots of the MP and scattered same with some destroyed.
  14. The ballot papers were all scattered; a significant number were destroyed, and some were taken away from the scene. The EC did not have the ballot papers to re-sort or count. Appendices A, B, C, D, E, F and G are videos and pictorial evidence of destruction of uncounted ballots.
  15. It was practically impossible for valid votes or ballot papers to be identified or re-sorted and counted as some party members made away with them and some were destroyed. The EC lost control of the election process and materials were damaged.
  16. The Electoral Commission team from Yendi to conduct the elections were; The Municipal EC Director (Madam Millicent), Iddrisu Yussif (Returning Officer), Issah Mohammed Saani (Name Reference List Officer), Alhassan Osman (Ballot Issuer) and other two supporting staff.
  17. The Electoral commission also brought the EC Directors from Saboba and Kpandai, a deputy director from Sagnarigu district, Regional Technician and Regional Stores who worked hand-in-hand with the Yendi EC team. Meanwhile all elections in Yendi Constituency including the recent NPP Presidential Primaries were conducted by only the team without any problems.
  18. The EC officer (Regional Stores) who maliciously destroyed and pocketed some valid votes sorted in my favour was arrested amid the chaos and sent to the Yendi Police Station.
  19. The Divisional Police Commander for Yendi Division was asked to man the main gate which is far from the elections centre whiles the Regional Police Commander and his team took over the elections centre. Meanwhile all previous elections including the recent NPP Presidential Primaries were all manned by the Divisional Police Commander and his team and it was very successful.
  20. I went to the Yendi Police Station to make an official complaint about the situation in anticipation that the relevant bodies would take up the matter and deal with the culprits whose actions resulted in the chaos.
  21. Later in the night, the information I received confirmed that the 3rd National Vice Chairman, the Northern Regional Chairman, the Northern Regional Organizer, the incumbent MP, the Regional and Divisional Police Commanders, and the EC Officers held a meeting at the Yendi Police Station purporting to resolve the matter.
  22. Neither I nor my agents were invited to the meeting. Some of my supporters who got a hint of the information followed up at the Police Station and were denied access to the meeting by the Police Officers.
  23. The failure of the Police, the EC Officers, National and Regional Party Officers to invite me or allow my agents access to the meeting purporting to resolve the issue was in clear violation of the rules of natural justice. Consequently, any decision arising thereof which affects my interest ought to be declared invalid and of no effect.
  24. On the night of 27th of January, 2024, we saw a video taken at the Yendi Police Station in which the 3rd National Vice Chairman, Alhaji Masawudu Osman in the company of the Northern Regional Chairman and his team, and some Constituency Executives, purportedly declared Hon. Farouk Aliu Mahama as the winner without the appropriate authority, or recourse to any counting of ballots or any due process of law, and in clear violation of the guidelines issued by the party on the 22nd of January 2024.
  25. In view of the foregoing, I respectfully request the National Executive Committee to: a) Hold that NPP Parliamentary Primaries of the Yendi Constituency held in Yendi on the 27th of January 2024 were tainted with substantial irregularities, violations, infractions and therefore lost its validity.

(b) Declare that the 2024 NPP Parliamentary Primaries of the Yendi Constituency held in Yendi on the 27th of January 2024 as null, void and of no effect whatsoever.

(c) Declare that under the Parliamentary Primaries Protocols for Incumbent Members of Parliament of the NPP issued on the 22nd of January 2024 with reference number NPP/HQ/PR/2024/01/22/GS/PP, the only body mandated to conduct and declare results of the 2024 Parliamentary Primaries of the Yendi Constituency is the Electoral Commission of Ghana.

(d) Declare that neither the 3rd Vice Chairman, Alhaji Masawudu Osman, nor any party executive, party officer, nor any government appointee has the mandate to conduct or declare results or winner of the NPP Parliamentary Primaries of the Yendi Constituency held on the 27th of January 2024.

(e) Declare that the purported declaration of Hon. Farouk Aliu Mahama by Alhaji Masawudu Osman (3rd National Vice Chairman) as the winner of the 2024 NPP Parliamentary Primaries for Yendi Constituency on the 27th of January 2024 is null, void and of no effect whatsoever and he as a National Officer should be sanctioned for disregarding party protocols.

(f) The Regional Party Officers who were also involved in the misconducts should be sanctioned.

(g) All EC officers who were complicit in the process should be sanctioned by the EC.

  1. h) Make an order prohibiting the incumbent Member of Parliament, Hon. Farouk Aliu Mahama from holding himself as the Parliamentary Candidate (PC) Elect of the Yendi Constituency for the 2024 Elections.

( i) Order for fresh elections to be conducted and supervised by competent, independent, and sincere Electoral Commission Officers, Party Officers, and Security Officers.

( j) Make any other order(s) as the party may deem fit under the circumstance. I respectfully submit above trusting that the leadership of the party will act decisively and in the greater interest of our enviable party for justice and true democratic credentials of our party to prevail over all other interests. God bless our homeland Ghana and our great New Patriotic Party.

Thank you.  HajiaAbibata Shanni Mahama NPP Parliamentary Aspirant, 2024 Yendi Constituency
