Myths About Menopause

0
Menopause

A natural decline in reproductive hormones when a woman reaches her 40s or 50s. Menopause is signalled by 12 months since last menstruation.

Common symptoms include hot flashes and vaginal dryness. There may also be sleep disturbances. The combination of these symptoms can cause anxiety or depression.

Menopause is a natural process with treatments that focus on symptomatic relief.

Vaginal dryness is treated with topical lubricants or oestrogen. Medications can reduce the severity and frequency of hot flushes. In special circumstances, oral hormone therapy may be used.

It Makes You Forgetful

It’s true you may feel a little foggier during perimenopause, the transition time into menopause. But menopause itself doesn’t cause memory loss. Any memory troubles you may have are more likely due to your brain aging.

It Starts When Periods Stop

You’re not technically in menopause until you haven’t had a period for 12 months in a row. You’ll likely go through some time with irregular periods first, during perimenopause. That can last as long as 8 years.

It Makes You Irritable

Menopause itself doesn’t alter mood. But some of the symptoms, such as night sweats and hot flashes, can mess with your sleep. That might make you moodier during the day.

You Can’t Get Pregnant

Your fertility doesn’t necessarily go away when you first stop getting your period. It’s true that you’re much less likely to get pregnant after age 45, even if you’re still having periods. But it’s still possible for some women. To be on the safe side, doctors recommend using birth control until you’ve gone a full year with no period.

Your Sex Life Is Over

Decreasing levels of the female hormone estrogen in your body may lower your sex drive and increase vaginal dryness. Sex probably won’t feel like it did when you were in your 20s. But that doesn’t mean you can no longer enjoy it. Lubricants, hormone therapy, and exploring new forms of turn-ons can keep your sex life alive.

You Need to Take Hormones

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is just one of many tools you can use to deal with menopause symptoms like hot flashes and vaginal dryness. HRT has risks as well as benefits. Your doctor can help you decide if it’s right for you. If not, you may be able to ease symptoms with acupuncture or relaxation techniques, vaginal lubes, and lifestyle changes such as regular exercise and a healthy diet.

It Makes You Gain Weight

Declining estrogen levels may make it more likely that any extra pounds will settle around your middle. But weight gain isn’t a given after menopause. Often, it’s a result of a slowing metabolism as you age. If you eat as much as you always did and don’t work out more, you’ll put on pounds. The answer? Eat less and move more. Include strength training to boost muscle mass and metabolism.

Men Have Menopause, Too

It’s typical for men to have a drop in testosterone as they age, but “manopause” isn’t like menopause at all. Testosterone levels lower gradually as a man ages, not quickly like estrogen in women. It’s not fair, but “the change” also doesn’t cause as many — or sometimes any — symptoms for men.

It Only Happens After 40

The most common age for menopause is between 45 and 55, but it’s possible to have it as early as your 30s. Certain surgeries, medical conditions, or medications can induce menopause. It can be genetic. And sometimes there’s no known cause. About 5% of women in the U.S. enter menopause before age 45, and about 1% before age 40.

You’ll Get It When Mom Did

Your genes play an important role in when you’ll go through menopause. But other factors matter, too. Smokers start menopause an average of 2 years sooner than nonsmokers. If you have an autoimmune disease or have had chemotherapy, you also may be more likely to start menopause early.

Feature: Bawumia Media Encounter: His Convictions And Intellectual Depth Prove He Is A Man On A Mission

0

One of the most unpleasant tasks for any professional, let alone a politician, is to face the media, expecting barrage of questions from both friendly and hostile journalists and if you are a political leader from an incumbent party, dealing with the excruciating impact of global factors on your local economy, then the risk is even higher, especially with a major election in sight.

In such a media engagement, a slip could be catastrophic, while a stellar display, surely, will catapult one’s campaign to an unimaginable height. This was the dilemma Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), found himself in, when he faced the Ghanaian media, in a much anticipated media interactions on Sunday August 25, 2024.

Dr Bawumia is a great political orator, no doubt, having endeared himself to the media and held many Ghanaians spellbound with his eloquent and analytical presentations. But this was a completely different ball game. For the first time in 16 years, Bawumia faced the media not under the shadows of the veteran politician Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

For the first time, Bawumia was facing the media all alone, as his own man, carrying his own cross, but crucially, also carrying the perceived infractions of the Akufo-Addo government he has served as Vice President for the past seven and half years.

The media engagement, predictably, was therefore going to be both friendly and hostile, from admirers and critics, with uncertain pictures and they did! and Bawumia weathered the storm remarkably.

In my analysis below, I share how Dr Bawumia navigated through the questions well.

Audience

In communication, especially political communication, knowing and understanding your audience is very key. There were two audiences involved in this; the media, being the primary audience and the general Ghanaian population.

I was left with no doubt that Dr Bawumia understood his audience very well. Starting off his presentation by requesting for a minute’s silence for departed members of the media, especially those who lost their lives in the line of duty, was a mark of great reverence to the media and acknowledging the indispensable role of the media in strengthening Ghana’s democracy, clearly underlined his commitment to media freedom.

Dr Bawumia could not have opted for a better start to his media encounter, other than his public show of respect to the media.

Message

Even though this was supposed to be an unpredictable Q n A session, Dr Bawumia set the tone perfectly with a concise opening remarks, which highlighted his political journey so far, especially as Flagbearer of the NPP. Rightly, he acknowledged and thanked the media for the supportive role they have played in his journey.

Bawumia’s messaging also focused on two key things; vigorously highlighted the positive record of the government, and his own vision he intends to implement as President. Nuancing his message along these two lines was the smartest thing to do.

Delivery

Dr Bawumia is not new to such deliveries before the press but as I mentioned earlier, this was a different exercise, in which he had to respond to surprise questions, rather than a lecture from a prepared text.

Over all, it was an excellent delivery. Dr Bawumia was clearly on top of issues, in all sectors; from economy to mining. I was particularly impressed by the bold manner he handled questions on the economy. This is an area many had predicted he would avoid, or at best, be evasive. However, he was bold in his responses. More importantly, his responses to many of the economic questions were ladened with data, which anyone can verify.

Demeanour

Dr Bawumia presented a confident demeanour, but he was also very calm in delivering his answers, especially on issues that needed clear and detailed explanation, such as the height of the economic crisis in 2022.

Dr Bawumia can be a fiery communicator, especially on the campaign trail before a charged, enthusiastic crowd but this was a platform to break down complex issues to Ghanaians, through the media and the delivery required a persuasive posture. Dr. Bawumia was persuasive and that was effective political communication.

Banking Crisis

The banking sector cleanup, which sanitised the collapsing banking sector of Ghana, is, undoubtedly, a controversial topic which is grossly misunderstood, or misrepresented politically.

Therefore, seizing the opportunity such a national platform offered, to explain in detail, to journalists and the nation, the extent of rot in the banking crisis was a masterstroke. Many genuinely don’t know, and some pretend to be unaware the rot, which nearly collapsed the sector.

With the recent posture of former President Mahama, with regards to the banking sector clean up, Bawumia hit the right button by roping in Mahama, who he painted as one who has not even read the report of the receiver. Until Bawumia opened up in detail what really happened in the banking sector, not many Ghanaians had been aware of the extent of rot.

Sincerity

To be fair to Dr Bawumia, he has always admitted to the economic challenges the country has faced but Sunday night was his most touching admission. He was visibly and audibly worried as it showed the depth of his concern in 2022, during the worst moment of the crisis.

Admitting and even going on to open the lid on how the economy nearly collapsed in 2022, showed sincerity on his part as a leader. Not many would do what Bawumia did. The easiest route would have been to be defensive and evasive.

Problem Solver

As one of his taglines says, “to lead is to solve.”

Dr Bawumia lives to refer to himself as a leader who solves problems and throughout his presentation, he left the nation in no doubt that he is a problem solver. After painting a frightening picture of the extent of economic crisis in 2022 and how concerned he was, Dr Bawumia also showed how he thought through the difficulties and came out with effective solutions – the gold for oil and gold purchasing policies.

Highlighting a number of policies he also proposed, which addressed a number of age-old challenges in the country, portrayed him as a problem solver, and a leader who has what it takes to weather the storm.

Tough Questions

Unlike recent encounters I’ve seen, which many soft and cooked questions were asked, many of the questions that were asked Dr Bawumia appeared hostile and unfriendly, which was very good for the audience, especially those watching. Some of them were questions the opposition would usually ask or have been asking Dr Bawumia.

Having the opportunity to answer them, right in front of the media did his campaign lots of good. If those questions; on the economy, on his role as Vice President and others had not been asked, many it would have been a blot on the event.

Conclusion

Dr Bawumia, once again, proved why he has had such a meteoric political rise. He rises to the occasion when expectations are so high, and on this occasion, when the entire nation was watching, he did.

Forget politically motivated negative analysis of his performance. It is normal and it is to be expected. A well known anti Bawumia political communicator even had issues with the number of minutes Bawumia used to address the question on the economy. Once the focus was on the minutes used and not what was said, then it exposes the mischief of the so called analyst.

In his nearly four hour presentation, Dr Bawumia showed admirable intellectual depth and remarkable possibility mindset, which is required, at this stage, to move Ghana forward.

With a dominant youthful population, Ghana needs a leader who has demonstrated a clear understanding of modern realities and as Vice President, Dr Bawumia has showed that.

In his presentation and answers, Dr Bawumia showed his new, clear vision to transform the country as President in all sectors, with digitalisation, which is indispensable in contemporary economies, as a catalyst.

I noticed and admired his unwavering commitment to modern ways of national transformation through digital systems, national values and a possibility mindset.

To sum it all up, Dr Bawumia proved that he is a man on a mission. His political critics will publicly attack him, but in private, they admire the depth of his intellect.

Jordan Ayew got his first goal for Leicester City in his debut match

Ghana forward Jordan Ayew has reiterated the importance of Leicester City getting their first win of the season after starring in the 4-0 victory over Tranmere Rovers.

The 32-year-old forward scored and delivered an assist as the Foxes progressed to the third round of the EFL Cup.

Ayew, who joined the Foxes in the summer transfer window was making only his second appearance for the club, who had drawn and lost in their opening two Premier League matches.

“I am really happy. The crowd was good for me and it was importance for us to win because we have not won since the start of the season. Today was very important for us and I think we played well, we won, we scored some goals and played some good stuff and it is good for confidence for Saturday because it is a big one for us,” he said after the match.

Leicester will welcome Aston Villa, Ayew’s former club, to the King Power Stadium on Saturday.

“It was a special one, I thank God it went in but the most important thing is that the team we managed to get qualification for the next round and hopefully, we can get a run,” he added while narrating his debut goal.

We are ready for the World Cup -Yussif Basigi

Black Princesses Coach Yussif Basigi

Black Princesses Coach Yussif Basigi has reiterated that playing high-profile international friendly matches will aid his team’s preparation ahead of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.

The Black Princesses who are currently in Colombia have played two high profile friendly matches in readiness for the tournament. Ghana drew goalless against Mexico in their first match before drawing 2:2 against South Korea on Tuesday.

“This has been an improved game as compared to the first one. In the game against Mexico, you could tell they were a bit tensed but against South Korea, they played very well looking at how the Koreans play and we were able to hold them if not for the penalty, though it is part of the game” Yussif Basigi told ghanafa.org after the friendly against South Korea.

“Conceding two penalties is a worry but it gives us a fair idea of what to expect in the main tournament because at times referees protect players a lot and so if you are not careful with a little touch, they take a penalty against you”

“It has given us a fair idea of what to do and we will work on that before our next game”

“We are ready for the tournament. All that we were looking for in the team, we have seen it and it has given us hope that this team will live up to expectation” he added.

The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup will kick off in Colombia from Saturday, August 31 – Sunday, September 22, 2024.

Ghana will open their campaign against Austria on Monday, September 2,2024.

Ronaldo nets 899th career goal with a stunning set piece for Al-Nassr

0
Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo netted the 899th goal of his career in Al-Nassr‘s win over Al Feiha on Tuesday.

After Talisca gave the visitors the lead at the King Abdullah Sport City Stadium, Ronaldo has the chance to double their advantage after a foul on the edge of the box.

Opting for placement over power, the 39-year-old curled his strike beyond the wall and into the top corner to the goalkeeper’s left.

The strike marked Ronaldo’s 64th goal from free-kicks, moving him to just one behind fellow set-piece specialist and Premier League leader David Beckham‘s career total.

The goal comes less than two weeks after Ronaldo was mocked on social media after sending a set-piece ballooning over the bar in the Saudi Super Cup semi-final.

Before stepping up to take the strike, he confidently told himself in Portuguese: ‘I’m the best.’

However, his ensuing effort left a lot to be desired, careering high above the gold and failing to even elicit a reaction from the goalkeeper.

While the Portuguese forward’s free-kick record has him rubbing shoulders with some of the game’s greats, he still has some work to do if he is to set the all-time record before hanging up his boots.

Fondly remembered for his eight-year spell at Lyon, Juninho Pernambucano currently holds the title as the most prolific player in football history from a dead ball situation.

The former Brazil international netted 198 career goals in all, with an astonishing 77 of those coming from free-kicks.

Ronaldo’s long-time rival Lionel Messi tops the chart for active players, with 65 free-kick goals in his glittering career.

Man United, Chelsea in Sancho & Sterling swap deal

0
Raheem Sterling

Manchester United and Chelsea are currently in talks over a stunning swap deal that could see Jadon Sancho and Raheem Sterling switch clubs in the final days of the transfer window.

Sancho has been left out of United’s squad for their opening two Premier League games, while Sterling has been banished to Chelsea’s ‘bomb squad’ after falling out of favour with Enzo Maresca,

Both men are now looking for a move to resurrect their careers, and a swap deal between United and Chelsea is potentially on the table.

But which club would be getting the better side of the deal?

Jadon Sancho

Statistics provided by Opta point to a clear winner between the England wingers, indicating that it may actually be United who come away the happier club.

Conveniently, the two players have featured in almost exactly the same number of games – 83 for Sancho at United, 81 for Sterling at Chelsea – making a comparison pretty straightforward.

This is despite Sancho joining United a year earlier than Sterling moved to Stamford Bridge, highlighting the problems the former has had at Old Trafford.

Over the past three years, Sancho has recorded just 12 goals and six assists for the Red Devils in his 83 outings. Sterling has the upper hand in both categories with 19 goals and 12 assists.
