I have a movie on galamsey yet to be premiered -Dr. Likee

Dr. Likee

Popular Ghanaian comic actor Dr. Likee, also known as Akabenezer, has disclosed that he has a movie about illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, that is yet to be released.

This follows the excessive negative impacts illegal mining is having on the country’s water bodies and forest reserves, which has made most rivers unsafe for human consumption. This has led to some organisations, such as The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and Technical University Teachers’ Association of Ghana (TUTAG), going on strike to demand that the government immediately ban all illegal mining activities in the country. The most recent action was Catholic Churches in Accra protesting against galamsey on Friday, October 11.

Speaking on The Bonah Show, Dr. Likee revealed that he has numerous contents on galamsey, but the climax of it will be released next month. This will help talk about the adverse impacts of illegal mining activities.

“I have a whole lot of contents on galamsey. I even have a movie on it which will be released next month,” he said.

The award-winning comic actor also clarified that the movie is not politically motivated, but rather aims to discuss the negative impacts of galamsey on the environment and the need to prohibit it as soon as possible.

The movie is not about politics but it advises us to stop galamsey. Because all our water bodies have deteriorated. If I come abroad, I see how water bodies are preserved, but for us, it keeps deteriorating.”

Illegal mining has become a menace with exacerbating impact on water bodies and the forests. Whilst there the calls on the government to ban the activity across the country increase, the government has seemed to not have taken a swift action as more organisations and individuals join to pressure the government.

Blakk Rasta

With the first round of voting for the 67th Grammy Awards still ongoing, Ghanaian artist Blakk Rasta has submitted his album Salaga Soljah for consideration in the Best Reggae Album category.

Remarkably, it is the only African reggae album vying for nomination, among over 75 eligible submissions received for consideration in this category.

Other internationally renowned artists, such as Vybz Kartel (Party With Me), The Wailers (Evolution), UB40 (UB45), and compilations like Jamaica Festival Song 2024 Competition and Celebrating Jamaica 62, have also been submitted.

According to the Recording Academy, the Best Reggae Album category “recognizes excellence in albums of reggae music, including roots reggae, dancehall, and ska.”

To be eligible, albums must contain more than 75% playing time of new reggae recordings, with featured artists, producers, and engineers eligible for nomination only if they contributed more than 50% of the project’s playing time.

Blakk Rasta’s Salaga Soljah is a live-recorded, twenty-track album performed in English, French, and several African languages, including Dioula, Dagbani, Hausa, Sissala, Akan, and Gruni.

The album also features collaborations with international reggae stars like Anthony B, Tiken Jah Fakoly, and King Ayisoba.

Blakk Rasta remains optimistic that a nomination or possible Grammy win for an African reggae album would underscore reggae’s impact and relevance on the African continent.

He believes that winning Best Reggae Album at the Grammy Awards would honor the legacy of reggae pioneers Bob Marley and The Wailers.

Nominees for the 67th Grammy Awards will be announced on November 8, 2024, with the main awards ceremony set for February 2, 2025.

Sudan military’s strike on market in capital kills at least 23

Plumes of smoke rise during clashes in Sudan

The Sudanese military has carried out an air strike on a marketplace in the capital Khartoum, killing at least 23 people, says a local network of volunteer rescuers.

More than 40 others were said to be wounded, the Southern Belt emergency room said on Sunday in a post on Facebook.

“Some of them are in critical condition. This is the result of the military air bombing of Khartoum central market yesterday [Saturday] afternoon,” it said, quoting witnesses at the market area.

The market is near one of the main camps in the Sudanese capital where the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has been fighting the military, in a civil war that has killed tens of thousands of people.

Fierce fighting has raged since Friday around Khartoum, much of which is controlled by the RSF, with the military hitting the centre and south of the city from the air.

The military is advancing towards Khartoum from nearby Omdurman, where clashes erupted on Saturday, witnesses said. The ongoing war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary RSF has raged since April 2023, killing 20,000 people and displacing more than 10 million, including 2.4 million who have fled to other countries, according to estimates by the United Nations.

The government loyal to the army is based in Port Sudan on the Red Sea coast, where the army has retained control.

The RSF, meanwhile, has taken control of nearly all of the vast western region of Darfur.

Indian politician Baba Siddique shot dead in Mumbai

The motive for the murder of Siddique, seen here in February, remains unclear

An Indian politician has been shot dead in the commercial capital, Mumbai.

Gunmen opened fire on Baba Siddique, 66, near the office of his son, who is also a politician, according to local media reports.

Two people have been arrested in connection with the killing.

Siddique, a former local minister, was a senior figure in the politics of Maharashtra state, which is expected to hold legislative polls next month.

In February he defected from Congress, India’s main opposition party and joined the unrelated regional National Congress Party (NCP), which is part of the governing coalition of the BJP.

Maharashtra’s deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, from the same party as Siddique, said he was shocked by the “cowardly attack”.

Siddique was known for lavish parties and for close ties to Bollywood superstars.

The shooting happened with high security in place due to a major Hindu festival in the city.

Opposition parties have criticised the government, saying there was a major lapse in security. The state government has promised a thorough inquiry.

Though two suspects have been taken into custody, the motive is not clear. Police are searching for a third suspect.

Some Indian media report the suspects have said they were from a gang run by notorious criminal Lawrence Bishnoi.

Bishnoi is currently serving a jail sentence for his involvement in several high-profile murder cases, including the killing of the Indian rapper Sidhu Moose Wala in 2022.

The shooting came weeks after Siddique’s security detail was upgraded following death threats.

Ukraine denounces Russia’s reported execution of captured troops

Ukraine denounces Russia's report

Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman has denounced the alleged execution of nine captured Ukrainian troops by Russian forces in the Kursk border region.

Dmytro Lubinets said he had written to the United Nations and the Red Cross about the allegations, accusing Moscow of breaching “all the rules and customs of war”.

The intervention follows reporting by Ukrainian battlefield analysis site DeepState, which published drone footage purporting to show the dead troops who it said were drone operators. Officials in Russia have yet to comment on the allegations.

Kyiv is believed to have deployed thousands of troops into the Russian border region since it launched its shock incursion earlier this summer.

The images published by DeepState showed the dead Ukrainian troops stripped to their underwear and lying face down in what appeared to be farmland in Kursk. The BBC cannot indepenelty verify the images.

The outlet said the drone operators had been overrun by a rapid Russian advance.

“These actions must not go unpunished, and the enemy must bear full responsibility,” Mr Lubinets wrote in a message to Telegram. “The international community should not turn a blind eye to such crimes!”

Kyiv has frequently accused Russian of executing captured Ukrainian troops – a war crime under the Geneva Convention. Earlier this month the prosecutor general’s office alleged that Russian forces had executed 93 Ukrainian soldiers since the beginning of the conflict.

It added that an official investigation had been opened into reports that 16 Ukrainian soldiers were executed in the eastern Donetsk region near the city of Pokrovsk – where fighting has raged for months. Officials said the reports would mark the “largest mass execution” of Ukrainian prisoners of war by Russian troops since Moscow launched its invasion in February 2022.

The Kremlin denies that its soldiers have been committing war crimes in Ukraine.

UN accuses Israel of violating international law by breaching southern Lebanon position

UN Secretary-General António Guterres

UN peacekeepers in Lebanon said Sunday the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) breached one of its positions in southern Lebanon, in violation of international law.

“At around 4:30 a.m., while peacekeepers were in shelters, two IDF Merkava tanks destroyed the position’s main gate and forcibly entered the position. They requested multiple times that the base turn out its lights,” the UN Interim Force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, said in a statement on Sunday.

“The tanks left about 45 minutes later after UNIFIL protested through our liaison mechanism, saying that IDF presence was putting peacekeepers in danger.”

UNIFIL said the IDF’s actions are a “flagrant violation of international law and Security Council resolution 1701 (2006),” adding that it has requested an explanation from the Israeli military over what it called “shocking violations.”

In addition to its position being breached, UNIFIL also said 15 of its soldiers are receiving treatment after another incident in the same area.

“At around 6:40 a.m., peacekeepers at the same position reported the firing of several rounds 100 metres north, which emitted smoke. Despite putting on protective masks, fifteen peacekeepers suffered effects, including skin irritation and gastrointestinal reactions, after the smoke entered the camp,” the statement read, without indicating who had fired the rounds.

Lastly, UNIFIL said the IDF had stopped what it said was a “critical logistical movement” near Meiss el Jabal, denying it passage.

“We remind the IDF and all actors of their obligations to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property and to respect the inviolability of UN premises at all times,” the statement also read.

Gruma Youth leader in Ashanti region roots for Bawumia

0
Yakubu Mohammed - Gruma Youth leader Ashanti

Chief Yakubu Mohammed, the Gruma Youth leader (Mbrantiehene) of Ashanti region has called for the support of Ghanaians to vote massively for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential candidate, Dr Mahammadu Bawumia, in the December elections.

The Youth leader, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Jordan Resolution Company Limited, which deals in cars and the Founder of Jordan Ladies, a women’s wing of the NPP, explained that Dr. Bawumia was the best person to continue with the numerous interventions of the Akufo-Addo administration.

He said compared to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration has done a lot, which must see to its logical conclusion, for the benefit of Ghanaians generally.

According to the Head of the Delta Force in Ashanti, the works of Bawumia as Vice President outweighs that of former President John Mahama of the NDC as Vice President and believes he (Bawumia) would excel over John Mahama as President when voted to succeed Nana Akufo-Addo.

Yakubu Mohammed noted that Ghanaians risk voting for the NDC because woes of Ghanaians are likely to deepen as Mahama will move the nation backwards.

The party financier has, therefore, called on the electorate to ensure that the 8-year myth surrounding the voting pattern in Ghana is broken this year, to enable Dr. Bawumia, described as the game changer, to change the paradigm shift.

Baffour Dr. Ossei Hyeamann Brantuo VI - Otumfuo-Manwerehene

The Overlord of Manwere Stool, Otumfuo-Manwerehene, Baffour Dr. Ossei Hyeamann Brantuo VI has declared his support for Mr. Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, the presidential candidate for the Movement for Change and Alliance for Revolutionary Change.

The Manwerehene praised Mr. Kyerematen’s experience, vision and commitment to transforming Ghana.

The chief made the solemn declaration at Atwima Hemang in the Atwima Kwanwoma District of Ashanti region, when Mr. Kyerematen’s ‘Caravan Campaign Tour’ stopped at his palace.

The outspoken chief expressed confidence in the MFC’s Presidential candidate’s ability to rescue the nation from its current economic challenges.

Baffour Ossei Hyeamann highlighted Kyerematen’s integrity and long-standing service to the nation, commending his decision to part ways with the NPP and contest as an independent candidate.

“Alan has a proven track record from the days of President Kufuor to President Akufo-Addo. He is visionary, hardworking and above all not corrupt, as we hear about some politicians.

“His leadership in launching the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCTA) and the “One District, One Factory (1D1F)” and the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement initiatives proves he is the leader we need now,” he stated.

“If you get one vote, then it is me because none of the other twelve candidates has your vision,” the chief added.

The Presidential candidate appealed to the chiefs and the good people of Atwima Hemang to vote massively for him in the upcoming general elections. He reiterated that his government will create more jobs for the youth if voted into power.

East Ada NPP, residents angry at DCE

NPP

Some residents and supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the East Ada Constituency have vented their anger on their DCE, for allegedly working against the party’s parliamentary candidate.

The anger of the residents and supporters of the NPP followed Sarah Dugbakie Pobee’s radio interview on Radio Ada, that she would not disclose where she is keeping the DRIP equipment which the Assembly had taken delivery of.

East Ada, like most of the assemblies in the country, has several unmotorable roads, most of which need reshaping to make them better for commuters.

NDC

In the light of this, the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for the Constituency, Naa Dornuki Nortey, during her house-to-house campaign in parts of the 27 electoral areas, was not spared with complaints about the bad roads and what government is doing.

For the two to work together to win the East Ada seat for the NPP for the first time in this year’s parliamentary elections, some party members told The Chronicle that they contacted the DCE to release the DRIP equipment to reshape the bad roads in parts of the electoral areas where the complaints were received during the campaign tour by Naa Nortey.

The DCE, according to the party members, was emphatic that she cannot release the equipment until she receives instructions from the national executives of the party.

“Sarah refused to tell the party where the equipment were, because the DRIP equipment is not at the District Assembly. Is she [Sarah] working against her own parliamentary candidate and the party or what?” the party members queried.

Two attempts by The Chronicle to reach Sarah Dugbakie Pobee on her MTN mobile phone line on Friday were unsuccessful.

In an interview on Radio Ada’s ‘Mortu Kwala’ morning show hosted by Emmanuel Kwabla Akwesi on Saturday, Sarah Pobee confirmed the allegations by the party members.

Answering to the host’s questions on whether the District had taken delivery of the DRIP equipment and where they were being kept, Sarah Pobee, speaking in the local Ada dialect said, “Yes, the District has taken delivery of two tipper trucks, one backhoe, a grader and a roller but I won’t tell you where I am keeping them, though they [DRIP equipment] are in the District.

“I want to keep them away from miscreants who can go and remove vital parts of the equipment to eventually render them useless. You heard news of how miscreants stole some parts of the equipment in some Districts. I don’t want that to happen to us [East Ada District].

“I am waiting for directives from the highest office before I dispatch the machines to all the 27 electoral areas to reshape their deplorable roads.

“The electorate should be patient… they will see the machines on their bad roads as soon as the directives reach me. My engineers have inspected all the roads that need reshaping and very soon, they will some works being done on them.”

The District Assembly is a stone throw from the District Police Station, but the DCE insisted that the equipment was safe at its undisclosed location than at the assembly.

Sarah’s radio interview infuriated several of the indigenes who wondered why their closest western neighbour, West Ada District, has its DRIP equipment parked in the open at the assembly, which is a distance away from the Sege Police Station, but Sarah would decide to hide theirs.

One caller said, “The machines are for the people of Ada, which were bought with the taxpayers’ money. Sarah must tell you [the host] and the people of Ada where she is keeping the equipment. The citizens can protect the machines if she doesn’t trust the police.”

Simple methods of easing or reducing the length of your cold

0
Common cold

So, you’ve got an annoying sniffle, sore throat or pesky cough and want to shake it off as quickly as possible.

You’re not alone, about one in 250 people are thought to have a cold at any one time in the UK, and across the Atlantic people in the US suffer an estimated 1billion colds every year.

Sadly, there is no way of curing the common cold. But there are some simple methods of not only easing your symptoms but potentially reducing the length of your illness.

Here, Professor Ron Eccles, an expert in biosciences at Cardiff University, and the former director of its Common Cold Centre, shares the best ways of not only beating a cold but cutting it short in record time.

Nasal spray

Professor Eccles recommends several over the counter remedies for making pesky colds more bearable, but one he stands by is a nasal spray.

But not all such sprays are created equal. He suggests using products containing Carragelose and kappa-Carrageenan — which are extracted from seaweed — within the first 48 hours of getting symptoms.

‘It’s no use when you’ve got severe symptoms, you need to take it within 24 to 48 hours maximum,’ Professor Eccles told MailOnline.

‘The sooner you take it the better, because it has an antiviral action. The problem is, once the viruses start to really trigger the symptoms, it’s a cascade that just carries on. You can’t stop it,’ he added.

The seaweed extracts used in the nasal sprays act as an anti-viral agent, helping form a protective barrier which blocks viruses and allergens from spreading further in the body — reducing the overall length and severity of the cold.

Other nasal sprays have also shown some promise.

Hot sweet drink

A hot sweet drink, such as a cup of honey with lemon or blackcurrant, is a simple way of relieving the symptoms of a cough and sore throat.

Professor Eccles explained that such a beverage works because it promotes salivation which soothes the throat.

For flu-like symptoms such as a headache, fever, chills or muscle aches, he suggested taking a paracetamol.

Finally, to deal with a blocked-up nose, he urges people to use a nasal decongestant spray containing the chemicals oxymetazoline or xylometazoline.

However, people can also take proactive steps to not only to reduce their length of illness if they do catch a cold but actually preventing infection in the first place by keeping their immune system healthy.

Professor Eccles said simply eating a balanced diet of fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as doing mild exercise like walking is enough to keep the immune system working well.

But there are also numerous supplements and remedies promising to alleviate cold symptoms.

Zinc

One of these is zinc a vital mineral critical for the development of cells that form the immune system.

As a result, there is some suggestion that taking a zinc supplement could help your body fight off common colds.

One Cochrane Library review found that taking small 10-40mg doses of zinc supplements over a few days might be helpful in reducing the duration of a cold.

The mineral is naturally found in red meat and dairy products and most people can get all the zinc they need from their diet alone.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C, another essential vitamin that helps with the regrowth and repair of tissue in the body, and may also help shorten a cold.

Adults need roughly 40mg of vitamin C a day, half of the amount found in a standard glass of orange juice.

One review supporting taking vitamin C to fight off colds, published in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine in 2016, found data ‘show a decreased severity and duration of colds when vitamin C is consumed at doses at or above 0.2 g/day’.

Another review, published last year, researchers from the Australian National University and the University of Helsinki found vitamin C reduced the severity and duration of cold symptoms.

Vitamin D

Found in foods such as oily fish, red meat, egg yolks and also from direct sunlight, vitamin D help regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in your body — two vital nutrients for keeping bones, teeth and muscles healthy.

But according to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), which provides health advice and guidance to the NHS, vitamin D could play a role in the immune system’s response to respiratory viruses including the common cold.

So, taking vitamin D might just keep your immune system in shape.

Although we can get enough vitamin D from our diet and sunlight for most of the year, we may fall short from October to early March as daylight hours start to decline in the colder months.

The NHS advises everyone should consider taking a supplement containing 10 micrograms of vitamin D every day during the autumn and winter.

One US brand of supplement, called EZC pack sold for about £30 a box, combines vitamin D, vitamin C, Zinc in one supplement which it says will provide ‘immune support’.

But Professor Eccles said you don’t need to burn a hole in your pocket when buying supplements.

‘I don’t think it’s useless. It’s just not worth paying that much money, you can buy vitamin D from your supermarket brand,’ he said.

He added: ‘I’ve taken vitamin D especially over the winter period, it is quite cheap. But of course, people go for believing they’re getting more effective vitamins. I don’t think it’s worth paying a large amount of money when you can get the vitamins from supermarket brands freely available.’
