How much is the Ballon d’Or worth, what is it made of, who designed it

0
Ballon d'Or

Everyone knows the Ballon d’Or, but what is its history? The famous award was created in 1956 by the then director of France Football magazine and precursor of the European Cup, Gabriel Hanot. Stanley Matthews was its first winner. It was merged in 2010 with the FIFA World Player of the Year, an agreement that came to an end in 2015.

The trophy has seen many stars of the king of sports win it and has changed its rules and aesthetics over the more than 60 years that it has been awarded.

Initially it was only for European players, which is why Diego Armando Maradona was never able to win it. Then it became a full competition among all footballers in the world, leading to a few years in which the player could be of any nationality but had to play for a European club.

What is it made of?

To make this trophy, two brass plates are embossed, an alloy of copper and zinc (which gives it a shine similar to gold). This is also how the trophy is shaped into a semi-sphere and the main motif of the trophy is created: a football. The goldsmith then welds the two pieces together with a blowtorch, while the chiseler fills the ball with a wax-like material and shapes the seams of the ball with a chisel and hammer. Finally, the resulting trophy is plated in fine gold with the France Football logo already engraved on it and then the name of the winner of that year’s trophy is marked.

How much does it cost?

Its economic value is slightly more than 3,000 euros, although its true value is symbolic, something incalculable for footballers.

Borussia Dortmund put five top stars up-for-sale

Dortmund have reportedly now placed Emre Can (left) and Julian Brandt (right) up for sale

Borussia Dortmund have reportedly put five established stars up for sale following their disappointing start to the season.

Last season’s Champions League finalists sit seventh in the Bundesliga after losing three of their opening eight matches – and they were knocked out of the German Cup by Wolfsburg on Tuesday night.

The pressure is ramping up on new manager Nuri Sahin already after he replaced Edin Terzic in the summer, with Dortmund now set to overhaul their squad.

According to Bild, Dortmund are willing to let Donyell Malen, Emre Can, Julian Brandt, Niklas Sule and Marcel Sabitzer leave the club.

Malen was ready to go at the end of last season, but failed to get a move to a top club. He has since parted ways with the agency group SEG, and looks likely to leave Dortmund in the coming months.

Former Liverpool midfielder Can has the captain’s armband at Dortmund, but there are concerns that the 30-year-old is not a true leader in the dressing room, meaning there is uncertainty over his future.

Meanwhile, Brandt is vice-captain, but has struggled for consistency on the pitch and Dortmund are likely to consider selling him at the end of the season if they receive a suitable offer.

Sule is currently sidelined with an ankle injury, but was previously unhappy at not being a guaranteed starter and may look for a fresh start elsewhere, while Sabitzer – who spent the second half of the 2022-23 season on loan at Manchester United – has been widely criticised for his performances out wide this term.

Significant changes appear to be imminent for Dortmund as they look to rescue their season.

Man Utd can be unstoppable – Van Nistelrooy

Ruud van Nistelrooy

Manchester United can be “unstoppable” but it will take time and hard work, says interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The former United and Netherlands striker will take charge for the first time when Leicester City visit Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup last 16 on Wednesday.

He was placed in temporary charge after Erik ten Hag’s sacking on Monday, with United 14th in the Premier League.

United have made an approach for Sporting manager Ruben Amorim, although he said on Tuesday that he has not made a decision on his future. Van Nistelrooy spent five years at United as a player from 2001 to 2006, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, EFL Cup and FA Community Shield. He returned last summer as Ten Hag’s assistant.

“When I returned in the summer as Erik’s assistant, it was because I believe that Manchester United can climb back to the levels that I knew here as a player,” Van Nistelrooy wrote in his programme notes before the Leicester game.

Van Nistelrooy, who managed PSV Eindhoven for a year from 2022, said United “can be unstoppable” when “players, staff and supporters pull together”.

It is unclear whether he would remain at the club if Amorim is appointed.

Van Nistelrooy said: “Even on an interim basis, it is a great honour to manage the club I love for however long I am asked to do so.”

Lands Commission Officers Charged With Money Laundering

Lands Commission office

Four officers of the Lands Commission, charged with 77 criminal offences, are now facing trial at the Financial and Economic Division of the High Court in Accra.

The accused – Frank Kwame Dorko, an IT officer; Emmanuel Mawuli Bani, an Engineer; Jephther Danso Akyea, a System Administrator; and Cecil Lebene Kwabla, also an IT officer – are facing counts of conspiracy to steal, stealing and money laundering.

The accused allegedly committed the crimes between December 2021 and 2023. According to documents filed with the court, the four officers are accused of creating unauthorised payment accounts to divert funds from the Lands Commission, resulting in financial losses of millions of cedis.

These accounts, allegedly created outside of the official Ghana.GOV payment platform, allowed the suspects to manipulate transactions and siphon funds meant for the Commission.

The case, presided over by Justice Edward Twum, was initially delayed as the accused were absent from the first court hearing.

The court was told that the accused had not been notified of the scheduled date.

It was also revealed that the fourth accused, Cecil Lebene Kwabla, fled to Canada and allegedly deposited an expired passport during the investigation, enabling his escape.

A Bench Warrant has now been issued for his arrest and the court will reconvene on November 13, 2024.

Case Background

The Lands Commission, mandated by the 1992 Constitution and the Lands Commission Act (Act 767), is responsible for managing land transactions, including the collection of Stamp Duties.

Customers in Accra, seeking to pay Stamp Duties, are typically directed to Universal Merchant Bank (UMB) or may pay digitally through Ghana.GOV, a platform that processes payments via mobile money or bank transfers.

Investigations into the alleged fraud began in September 2022, following a petition filed by the Managing Director of Arieli Company Ltd.

The company had reportedly paid GH¢84,000 in Stamp Duties, but the payment could not be traced within the Commission’s records.

This prompted the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) to launch an inquiry, uncovering a sophisticated scheme involving underpayment and diversion of funds by several of the Commission’s employees.

Fraudulent Activities Uncovered

The investigation revealed that several suspicious accounts were used to make unusually low payments on behalf of customers, severely undercutting the assessed Stamp Duty amounts.

Mobile money records, phone IMEI numbers and transaction records linked the accused individuals to these accounts, which were allegedly used to intercept funds.

Notable findings

Mosrear Enterprise: Paid only GH¢8,998 for transactions assessed at GH¢1,329,934.

Daniel Boateng: Paid GH¢423 against an assessed total of GH¢82,003.

Yaw Manu: Paid GH¢304.50 instead of GH¢21,903.

Kojo Kodjoga Enterprise: Paid GH¢3,641 for transactions valued at GH¢303,778.

Emmanuel Bani: Paid GH¢188 for an assessed total of GH¢26,001.05.

Kwadwo Stephens Enterprise: Paid GH¢1,600 against an assessed total of GH¢233,492.50.

The accused allegedly intercepted payments by collecting cash or cheques meant for the Ghana Revenue Authority, underpaid the amount on Ghana.GOV and falsified receipts with the full value for customers.

They reportedly shared the money among themselves or exchanged cheques for cash, with accomplices at Tema port.

US$3bIs Lost To Graft In Ghana Annually –Crusaders Against Corruption

0
Emmanuel Wilson Jnr., Chief Crusader of Crusaders Against Corruption

Chief Crusader of Crusaders Against Corruption has made a startling revelation that Ghana loses a staggering $3 billion to corruption every year.

This assertion was made during a program organised by Crusaders Against Corruption in Koforidua, where Wilson Jnr. cited former President Mahama’s past actions as a positive step in the fight against corruption.

According to Wilson Jnr., Ghana’s corruption problem is endemic, affecting every aspect of society.

From bribery to embezzlement, corruption has become a norm rather than an exception.

The Ghana Integrity Initiative estimates that the country loses up to $3 billion annually to corruption, which is confirmed by the 2021 Ghana Integrity of Public Services Survey (GIPSS) report.

Ghana’s corruption situation is alarming, with the country ranked 73rd on the Corruption Perception Index, tied with Hungary, Kuwait, Senegal and the Solomon Islands.

The 2022 Afrobarometer survey revealed that 77% of Ghanaians believe corruption has increased, up from 53% in 2019.

Corruption retards growth, hinders good governance and reduces the ability of developing countries to supply essential public services.

It also undermines trust in institutions, as 65% of Ghanaians believe most police officers are corrupt.

To combat corruption, Wilson Jnr. emphasises the need for honesty and integrity among citizens and leaders.

Instilling virtues of integrity, honesty and patriotism in children from a young age is crucial. Additionally, leaders must act honourably and corruption-related instances must be pursued vigorously.

The fight against corruption requires collective effort and a change in mindset.

As Wilson Jnr. statement highlights, Ghana’s future depends on its ability to tackle corruption and ensure accountability.

Injunction Notice Filed Against Funeral Of Nyanfeku Nyeiku II

0
Injunction

The Kwa Dadzie gate and Okyere gate, sub-sections of the royal gate of the Twidan family of NyanfekuEkroful (Abakrampa), Central Region, have filed for an injunction application at the Cape Coast High Court to stop the final funeral rites of the late chief of NyanfekuEkroful, NyanfekuNyeiku II, slated for October and November 2024.

The plaintiffs are Ebusuapanyin Kojo Afful and Ebusuapanyin Kwesi Embil, both of whom are heads of the Kwa Dadzie gate and Okyere gate of the Royal Twidan family of NyanfekuEkroful respectively.

The third plaintiff is Augustine Osei, a principal member of the Okyere gate and the brother of the late chief.

The first defendant is Emmanuel Kuuku Afrankoh, a member of Owoodu gate. The second defendant is Ebusuapanyin Kofi Appiah, who is the head of the Kodze gate and head of the larger Twidan family.

The third defendant is Omanpanyin Gabriel Abakah, who is the Omanpanyin of the NyanfekuEkroful.

The Royal Kwa Dadzie gate and Okyere gate, through their counsel, Eunice Frimpong Esq, filed for an interlocutory injunction in September, which seeks to stop the three other gates from organising the funeral of the late NyanfekuNyeiku II.

In the motion filed by plaintiffs sighted by The Chronicle, they prayed for the declaration that Nana NyanfekuNyieku II was a true royal of the Okyere gate and the immediate Pramado (Okyere and Kwa Dadzie) gate.

Additionally, the plaintiffs asked for an order restraining defendants from making and/or executing any decision/arrangements or announcement whatsoever, for the performance of the final funeral rites of Nana NyanfekuNyieku II, without the consent, approval and concurrence of the plaintiffs, who are his direct family members.

They prayed the court for a perpetual injunction restraining the defendants, their agents, assigns, privies, servants, workmen, and anyone claiming through them/connected to them from organising/performing the final funeral rites of Nana NyanfekuNyieku II, a.k.a. Prof. Raymond Nonatu Osei.

Counsel Eunice explained to the court that Kwa Dadzie and Okyere gates are a subsection of the Royal gate (jointly known as Pramado) of the Twidan family of NyanfekuEkroful, with the other gates being the Kodze gate, Owoodu gate and Okotopre gate, also forming part of the larger Twidan clan, but not royals who can mount the NyanfekuEkroful stool.

The plaintiffs said that their Kwa Dadzie gate and Okyere gate both trace their ancestry to Nana Kwame Nyanfeku I, who founded NyanfekuEkroful and was also the first occupant of the Kwame Nyanfeku stool of Nyanfeku Ekroful, adding that members of the two gates are thus the original members and true royals of the NyanfekuEkrofulTwidan family.

Eunice Frimpong argued that although all five gates make up the Twidan Family, it is only the Kwa Dadzie gate who are the rightful heirs to the NyanfekuEkroful stool, and that it is only members from the said gate that can be enstooled as chiefs of NyanfekuEkroful.

The counsel for the plaintiffs has served the District Police Commander of the Ghana Police Service, Abura Dunkwaw, a notice of pendency of an injunction.

The late Nana NyanfekuNyeiku, was known in private life as Prof. Raymond Osei, was a Political Science, Historian and Head of the Psychology and Social Science Department of the University of Cape Coast before his demise.

Married men should stay away from female ‘besties’ – Rita Edochie

Nollywood Actress Rita Edochie has strongly opposed married men maintaining close relationships with their exes or female friends.

She stated that a married man’s only female best friend should be his wife, arguing that if a married man values his friendship with his ex, he should have stayed with her.

Edochie warned single ladies claiming to be besties to married men, stating they’re potentially side chicks.

She advised moving on and focusing on one’s wife after a breakup, emphasising boundaries in marital relationships.

Speaking in pidgin, she wrote on Instagram: “The next thing now una go begin tok second wife matter. As a married man, you are busy keeping female besties. Your ex for that matter, if I talk now una go say Ijele you dey worry. Imagine going back to your vomit, if you love and value your relationship with your ex a lot, why didn’t you end up with her?

“Why drop her? Call her your ex, marry an entirely different woman. Then go back to relate with that same ex while still married to your wife?

“Have you thought about the mental and emotional stress it imposes on the women you lawfully wed? Hmmmmm. Just hmmm”

“Goat and yam no dey stay together simple. This was how that other one came in with the colleague and bestie format, why have a woman as your bestie or personal assistant? Listen as a married man, your only female bestie should be your wife.“

All these single ladies claiming besties to married men, all of una be side chicks to that man, you can’t be with him, locked up alone in one room and not do one or two, nothing person wan tell me biko.

“Stop deceiving yourselves, when she becomes your ex, move on and focus on your wife.

“I imagine your ex visiting your matrimonial home to cook for you as a married man. habanament? Ndi ala, I am so angry right now.”
