The Sawua Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) block has been inaugurated in the Bosomtwe district of the Ashanti region, with a call on Ghanaians to embrace education, since that is the best legacy Ghana can bequeath unto them.

The three-storey project, with ancillary facilities aims to give STEM education is a boost in the area.

The STEM block

Addressing the gathering prior to the inauguration  of the project,  the Ashanti regional minister, Samuel Osei-Mensah, pleaded with Ghanaians to pay attention to STEM educational module since that  is the areas under which developed countries had thrived.
According to Osei-Mensah, the world is transforming and Ghanaians must not be left behind, hence the need to appreciate educational policies rolled out by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo and his vice president Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia.

These educational strides, Osei-Mensah said at the function, were introduced and rolled out by the Akufo Addo-Bawumia administration to develop Ghana’s education, hence the introduction of free Senior High School (Free SHS) and Free TVET, which was ridiculed by some people.

Using the Girls in Information Communication Technology (ICT) programme to highlight his point, Osei-Mensah noted that the said programme was training girls with ICT skills.
“Not long ago, the Communications minister, Ursula Owusu was in the Ashanti region to train girls in ICT and that is the direction the world is tilting towards. The ICT is an arena that if you do not play at, you will left behind.”

The Ashanti region minister cited Afia Kobi SHS as a prime example of emerging change underway in Ghana’s education.

“Afia Kobi has been able to manufacture aeroplane, ship and this is how advanced nations started.”

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bosomtwe, Mr Joseph Assuming, lauded the government of the day for educational infrastructure in the area.
According to him, in 2017, SHSs in Bosomtwe were only thirteen, but today the district can boast of thirteen SHSs, adding that Bosomtwe has benefited so much from the government of the day.
On his part, the chief of Sawuah, Nana Kwaku Amankwa Sarkodie II, expressed appreciation to the Ashanti regional minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, minister for Education , Dr Osei Yaw Adutwum and the DCE for the area – Joseph Asumin.

Businessman Denied Bail In Alleged Fraudulent Sale Of Land

Accra Circuit Court

Accra Circuit Court 9 has denied bail to Ibrahim Damtey Botchway, a 64-year-old businessman, who is facing charges of fraud involving land transactions.

The decision, rendered by Presiding Judge, Samuel Bright Acquah, was influenced by Botchway’s ongoing trial in a similar case involving GH¢800,000.00. Ibrahim, also known as Damtey Botchwey, was arraigned on November 26, 2024, and his first appearance in the other case was on November 21.

He pleaded not guilty to charges of Conspiracy to Commit Crime: Defrauding by False Pretence and Defrauding by False Pretence. His co-accused, Asafoatse Paa Nii Osiakwan II and Okantey Shikatse, were absent during the proceedings. The court adjourned the case to December 11, 2024.

Details of the Case

According to court documents, Botchway allegedly engaged in fraudulent land transactions in February 2024. He is accused of granting conflicting rights to a 0.77-acre parcel of land at Odorkor Terrazzo to two separate entities: Chen Shuying and Union Beverages Company. This violates Section 277(2) (C) of the Land Act, 2020 (Act 1036).

The accused is also facing allegations dating back to 2017. He, along with Osiakwan II, a 55-year-old driver, and Shikatse, a 60-year-old mason, reportedly conspired to defraud a businessman, Alex Nartey (now deceased), of GH¢500,000.00. They promised to secure four plots of land at Ofankor but failed to deliver.

The Fraud Scheme

ASP Raymond Ackom, presenting the facts, stated that the accused persons, as members of the Odorkor Twuim Chief’s Palace, misrepresented the ownership of the land to Nartey and his wife, Jennifer. They claimed the land was embroiled in a legal dispute and requested GH¢500,000.00 to settle the matter. The payment was made through cheques and cash.

Despite a court-issued consent judgment in 2021 directing the land’s sale to a third party for at least $500,000.00, Botchway and his accomplices allegedly failed to refund the money as promised. After Nartey’s death, his wife discovered that the land had been sold and developed without her knowledge. Attempts to contact the accused were unsuccessful.

Editorial: Attack On Otumfuo’s Convoy – We Applaud Police Pre-Emptive Response

Editorial

The Ghana Police Service issued a statement yesterday that it was investigating the alleged attack on the convoy of Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, at Techiman in the Bono East Region. According to the statement the Asantehene was returning from a funeral at Nkoranza in the same region, when some youth pelted one of the buses in the convoy with stones. The incident reportedly happened on Monday, this week.

The statement further stated that the police were in touch with the Manhyia Palace and stakeholders in Techiman, as part of their investigations. The police statement did not, however, state whether any arrest has been made or not. The law enforcement agency nevertheless called for calm, as it delves into the case.

First of all, The Chronicle thanks the Police Administration for the prompt statement they issued, which has obviously helped to calm nerves and averted any reprisal attacks, either in Kumasi or Techiman. Since no arrest has been made, no one can tell the motive behind the attack. We are, however, cautioning the youth to be careful when it comes to the issue of tribe and chieftaincy.

Many African countries have been plunged into civil war as a result of tribal and chieftaincy issues. Fortunate for Ghana, she has so far managed to successfully navigate her way through this dangerous terrain. This does not, however, mean that we are completely immune from chieftaincy conflicts, if we do not put our house in order.

Though we have one state with a centralised government, the chiefs in the various regions still wield substantial powers because they have many followers.  And since we are intrinsically linked to our various tribes, attack on a chief is sometimes considered as an attack on the whole ethnic group.

Yes, we concede that no stone was thrown at the car Otumfuo Osei Tutu was sitting in, at least based on the statement that has been issued by the police, but since a vehicle in the convoy was attacked, it is logical for one to conclude that Asantehene has been attacked. This is a dangerous trajectory we should never dare to tread. The youth must, therefore, be careful with the way they behave in the country.

Because we have never gone to war, we don’t cherish the peace we are enjoying in this country. As we speak, the people of Palestine have been surrounded amid heavy bombardments, but they cannot escape. What to eat has even become a problem, as several reports indicate that some of them are starving to death.

If you go to the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan, the people do not simply have peace because of internecine war going on in these countries. In DR Congo in particular, people are being slaughtered like animals in the name of war. Is this what the miscreants in the case we are referencing are calling for in Ghana?

As we earlier indicated, the chiefs are the very embodiment of the ethnic groups they represent, so any attack on them is an attack on the whole group they represent. We only hope that what happened at Techiman was a pure criminal conduct exhibited by the youth and has no link to chieftaincy issues. But if the latter is the case, then we are appealing to chiefs in Techiman to rein in their people to avoid any conflict in the country.

Since the Bawku issue has already overburdened the government, the country cannot afford another chieftaincy conflict. This is the reason why The Chronicle is appealing to Asantehene and his massive followers to restrain themselves and allow the police to get the bottom of the matter. Ghana is the only country we have and its security must be of utmost importance to everyone, including the youth who reportedly attacked the convoy.

What Is a Migraine Cocktail?

0

A migraine cocktail is a combination of medications that you may use at home to treat a migraine headache. This term is also used to describe combinations of medications that doctors may use to treat your migraine if you seek medical help for one of those intense headaches at a hospital.

Migraine cocktail stigma

Many doctors and people who experience migraines dislike the phrase “migraine cocktail.” According to a 2022 survey of 1,000 members of the American Migraine Foundation community, 9.87% said they found the term migraine cocktail “stigmatizing,” while 7.28% called it “demeaning.”

The reason seems to be that “cocktail” is a common term for an alcoholic beverage. Understandably, people who have migraines don’t want others to think that they drink alcohol to ease their headaches. However, “cocktail” can also be used to describe a combination of medications. It’s worth adding that nearly 40% of survey respondents said they had no problem with the term migraine cocktail.

What’s in a Migraine Cocktail?

A migraine cocktail contains medications that are intended to relieve headaches and other symptoms caused by migraines. There is no single recipe for a migraine cocktail. However, one commonly used combination of over-the-counter (OTC) medications for treating migraines contains:

  • Acetaminophen (better known as Tylenol)
  • Aspirin
  • Caffeine

If you go to a hospital for treatment of an acute migraine, your doctor may use a different type of migraine cocktail, likely including prescription medications. If you are having a relatively mild migraine attack, doctors may try to ease your symptoms by giving you a combination of analgesics, such as NSAIDs or acetaminophen, plus a type of migraine drug called a triptan. If your migraine is more serious, your doctor may add additional medications. For a severe migraine that has lasted at least three days, doctors may try a cocktail that includes some or all of the following:

  • IV fluids
  • An NSAID called ketorolac (given by injection or infusion)
  • dopamine receptor blocker, such as prochlorperazine, metoclopramide, or chlorpromazine
  • Valproate, which is usually used to treat convulsions
  • Dihydroergotamine, a commonly used migraine drug

Doctors may also choose other combinations of migraine medications to treat your headache.

Migraine cocktail with Benadryl

If you go to a hospital for treatment of a severe headache, you may receive a migraine cocktail that contains diphenhydramine, which is the generic name for Benadryl. Doctors may add this medication because it can reduce certain side effects caused by other migraine medications. In particular, it may help prevent involuntary body movements, which can be caused by drugs called antiemetics. Some doctors think Benadryl may also help treat migraines, but that has not been proven.

Why Do People Get a Migraine Cocktail?

If you experience frequent migraine headaches, your doctor has probably prescribed medications to keep them under control and ease the pain and symptoms when one strikes. But sometimes, you may have a migraine so severe that it won’t respond to your usual pain-relieving medicine. If you have such a migraine that won’t let up, especially if it lasts three days or more, a migraine cocktail may offer relief.

Where to Go for a Migraine Cocktail

Your doctor may suggest a migraine cocktail that you can use at home. However, you may also receive a migraine cocktail if you go to a hospital for treatment of an unrelenting and severe headache. Often, that may mean going to an emergency room. However, your doctor may also give you a migraine cocktail at an outpatient infusion center or in a hospital room, if you’ve been admitted.

Over-the-Counter Migraine Cocktail

You can buy an OTC migraine cocktail at a drugstore, grocery store, or online. These products typically contain a combination of acetaminophen, aspirin, and caffeine. About 1 in 5 people who are having a migraine will experience complete relief of symptoms from this combination within two hours, according to a 2021 analysis. About half will experience at least a 50% reduction in symptoms within two hours.

Migraine Cocktail Alternatives

Taking steps to reduce your migraine attacks can help you avoid needing a migraine cocktail. The following can help lower the number of attacks you experience:

  • If your doctor has prescribed preventive medication, take it as directed.
  • Exercise regularly.
  • Stick to a meal routine by eating at the same time every day.
  • Stay well hydrated by drinking fluids, especially water, throughout the day.
  • Get plenty of sleep and follow a routine for going to bed and waking up.
  • Find a way to manage stress, which can trigger migraines, such as
