Ghana’s love for music is a vibrant blend of local and global rhythms. From AfroFuture to Tidal Rave, AfroNation, and Asabako, the passion for music is evident.

This enthusiasm extends beyond homegrown talent, embracing international artists and genres.

Spotify Wrapped 2024 reveals a nation with a diverse musical palate. Ghanaians are not only celebrating local stars but also exploring sounds from around the world.

“Ghanaians are not just consuming music,” says Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, “they are creating a bridge for Africa’s thriving music scene to come together.

Spotify Wrapped 2024 shows how Ghanaians are constantly expanding their musical taste, embracing the continent’s diverse sounds, and building a deeper appreciation for music.”

Black Sherif, known as “Killa Blacko,” leads the charge as the most streamed artist in Ghana.

For the second consecutive year, Killa Blacko also clinched the title of the most streamed Ghanaian artist in Ghana.

His passionate storytelling and catchy beats resonate deeply, with his songs becoming anthems for a generation.

His album, The Villain I Never Was, tops the charts, while his track Oil In My Head is among the most streamed Ghanaian songs, both released last year.

Ghana’s music scene is a testament to the power of cross-cultural pollination. While local artists like Sarkodie and Kweku Smoke remain popular, international stars such as Nigeria’s  Asake and Burna Boy also feature prominently.

The most streamed song in Ghana is Wotowoto by Odumodublvck and Black Sherif. Other popular tracks include Olivetheboy’s Asylum,  Lasmid’s Puul , KiDi’s Lomo Lomo as well as King Paluta’s Aseda

Ghana’s appreciation for female talent is clear. Ayra StarrTems and SZA are among the most streamed female artists, while Gyakie leads the pack for Ghanaian female artists.

Amaarae and Black Sherif are making waves internationally, bringing Ghanaian music to a global audience.

Ghanaian actor Prince David Osei, has descended on former President John Dramani Mahama for vying for the presidency of Ghana again.

In a post on X, Prince listed a number of leadership positions Mahama has occupied in his political career, questioning why he is bent becoming President for the second time.

“MP for 12 yrs, Deputy Minister -4yrs, Minister -4 yrs, Vice President -4 yrs

Still Former President Mahama want to be President again. The greediness of some African Leaders must never be encouraged,” he wrote on X.

Millions without power as Cuba hit by another nationwide blackout

Cuba hit by another nationwide blackout

Cuba’s national power grid has collapsed again, leaving millions of people across the Caribbean island without electricity in the latest such failure in recent months.

Authorities said the Antonio Guiteras power plant in Matanzas, the country’s top electricity producer, shut down about 2am (07:00 GMT) on Wednesday, prompting the grid collapse.

The Ministry of Energy and Mines said in a post on social media that it was working to restore power.

Cuba’s oil-fired power plants, obsolete and struggling to operate, reached a full crisis this year as oil imports from Venezuela, Russia and Mexico dwindled.

The system failure on Wednesday morning left the capital, Havana, almost completely in the dark, the Reuters news agency reported, quoting a witness.

Lights before sunrise could be seen only in a handful of large hotels and government buildings across the city’s skyline.

Reports of blackouts elsewhere in Cuba on social media suggested the entire island of 10 million people was without power although the government had yet to confirm the extent of the outage.

Cuba’s power grid collapsed multiple times in October as fuel supplies dwindled and Hurricane Oscar struck the far-eastern end of the island, prompting authorities to close schools and nonessential workplaces.

In November, Hurricane Raphael knocked out the grid again as it made landfall on the island as a Category 3 storm.

The storm tore across Cuba with winds hitting 185km/h (115mph), damaging homes, uprooting trees and toppling telephone poles.

Jailed Iranian Nobel winner temporarily freed after surgery

Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi

Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi has been released from jail for three weeks on medical grounds, according to her lawyer.

Mostafa Nili said officials had suspended his client’s jail sentence on doctor’s advice after Ms Mohammadi underwent surgery to remove a tumour.

Her family and supporters have called for her to be freed permanently, describing the temporary release as “too little, too late”.

The 52-year-old women’s rights activist has been held in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison since 2021.

“Based on the advice of the examining doctor, the public prosecutor suspended the jail sentence against Narges Mohammadi for three weeks and she was released from prison,” her lawyer Mostafa Nili wrote on X.

In a statement, the Narges Mohammadi Foundation said she underwent surgery last month after doctors discovered a bone lesion in her right leg suspected of being cancerous.

She was then transferred back to prison after just two days. The group said that was done “against her doctor’s advice and request from her legal team, even though she was unable to walk or even sit”.

Since then, Ms Mohammadi has seen a “rapid development of bedsores and intensified pain in her back and legs”.

The foundation called the 21-day suspension “inadequate” and said a minimum of three months of recovery is crucial for her recovery.

Unlike a medical furlough, which would have allowed the recovery period to count towards her prison term, this suspension means she will be required to serve an additional 21 days after returning to prison, the foundation added.

Ms Mohammadi won the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her campaigning against the oppression of women in Iran.

South Korea opposition files motion to impeach Yoon

Angry South Korean critizens chant as they fill the streets

South Korea’s opposition lawmakers have begun impeachment proceedings against President Yoon Suk Yeol over his failed attempt to impose martial law.

The country woke up to an uncertain reality on Wednesday after a night of unprecedented scenes which saw Yoon unexpectedly impose martial law, 190 lawmakers gather to vote it down, and a sudden reversal of the decision around six hours later.

After introducing the impeachment motion, South Korea’s main opposition Democratic Party condemned Yoon’s initial martial law declaration as “insurrectionary behaviour”.

Parliament will have to vote on whether to impeach Yoon by Saturday.

“We can no longer allow democracy to collapse. The lives and safety of the people must be protected,” said Kim Yong-jin, a member of the Democratic Party’s central committee.

The Party also said it wants to charge Yoon with “crimes of rebellion”.

It named Minister Kim Yong-hyun and Interior Minister Lee Sang-min as “key participants” of the martial law declaration, saying it also wanted them charged alongside Yoon.

Schools, banks and government offices in Seoul were operating as usual on Wednesday, but protests continued throughout the city demanding the president resign.

“Arrest Yoon Suk-yeol,” some angry citizens chanted as they filled the streets.

South Korea’s largest labour group, the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, vowed to go on indefinite strike until the president steps down.

Namibia elects Nandi-Ndaitwah as country’s first woman president

Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah elected Namibia’s president

Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has been elected Namibia’s president and will be the country’s first female leader, results released by the country’s electoral commission show.

The 72-year-old won with 57 percent of the vote, according to official results declared on Tuesday by the electoral commission, flouting predictions that she might be forced into a run-off.

“The Namibian nation has voted for peace and stability,” Nandi-Ndaitwah said after being declared president-elect.

Her win cements her governing South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) party’s 34-year hold on power since independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990 – a contested outcome.

Opposition parties have rejected the results after the election was marred by technical problems, including shortages of ballot papers and other issues, causing election officials to extend voting until Saturday. Long queues meant that some voters gave up on the first day of voting after waiting for up to 12 hours.

The opposition parties say the extension was illegal and have pledged to challenge the results in court. The candidate for the main opposition Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), Panduleni Itula, trailed Nandi-Ndaitwah with 25.5 percent of the vote, according to the commission.

“The rule of law has been grossly violated and we cannot call these elections by any means or measure as free, fair and legitimate,” Itula said on Saturday.

Nandi-Ndaitwah was promoted to vice president in February after President Hage Geingob died while in office.

While in power for decades, SWAPO has disenchanted young voters due to high youth unemployment rates and enduring inequalities.

She got her start in politics by taking part in the country’s underground independence movement in the 1970s. She returned from the UK to join parliament in 1990 and went on to serve as minister with several portfolios over the years.

Ashanti NPP elders extol Bawumia

Mrs. Appiah-Menka (middle) and other members of the Council pose with community leaders

The leadership and visionary qualities of the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has been extolled by the membership of the Ashanti Regional NPP Council of Elders.

The Council of Elders, who met with members of settler communities, comprising people of the Northern extraction and mainly Muslims in the Ahafo Ano South East, Ahafo Ano North and Ahafo Ano South West districts respectively, extolled the virtues of the Vice President, emphasising the need for this category of constituents to vote massively for him.

Led by Mrs. Rosemond Appiah-Menka, the Council of Elders met with opinion leaders and heads of ethnic communities comprising Kotokolis, Wangaras, Kusasis, Dagartis, Mamprusis,Konkombas, Frafras and Basares separately at Adugyama, Akwasiase and Mankranso.

The NPP Elders pleaded with settler communities to vote massively for Dr. Bawumia as one of their own, to champion their aspirations.

Mr. FrederickFredua Anto, alias Chairman F.F. Anto described Bawumia as a hardworking, decent, honest, brilliant and a visionary who has paved the way for better living standards of Ghanaians and advised them to disabuse their minds that the NPP does not accept a Northerner as a leader of the party.

He said it is time Northerners and Muslims complement the rest of Ghanaians to honour Dr. Bawumia as the first Moslem for the Presidency.

Kofi Frimpong, former MP for Kwabre East, said the NPP as a party had honoured Dr. Bawumia with the flagbearship and that it is time Muslims and Northerners also complement the gesture from the party.

Mr. Yaw Asuo Benie, a former constituency chairman noted that Akans elevated Bawumia and that it is for Muslims and Northerners to prop him up by intensifying the house-to-house campaign for Bawumia.

Dr. Oheneba Owusu-Danso pleaded with the community leaders to vote for a better candidate who can help with their future aspirations adding that “Missing Bawumia as the target in the polls will be suicidal”.

He noted that the implementation of the Free SHS policy is a herculean task and needs to be appreciated by Ghanaians as education is seen as a game changer even in advanced economies.

The former KATH CEO urged all Ghanaians to reciprocate the gesture of the government by voting for Dr. Bawumia and the NPP in Saturday’s polls.

Dr. Moussa Jabir Kebir, Vice chairman of the Council of Elders noted that Northerners had helped Mr. John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo as Akans to ascend the presidency so it is time Northerners also helped to bring Bawumia on board to enjoy the inherent benefits.

Beatrice Serwaa Derchie, a former MCE for Ejisu Municipality encouraged Nasara wings of the party to step up their campaign for Bawumia stressing that ‘Nasaras need to help make Bawumia’s bid a reality”.

Africa CDC Launches a Continental Blueprint to Combat Endemic and Neglected Tropical Diseases

Africa Union Member States have endorsed a new strategic plan at to tackle endemic diseases across the African continent. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) convened a key workshop from November 27–29, 2024, in Addis Ababa to launch the new strategy with an emphasis on integrated health systems, prioritising preventing and controlling major health threats such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis (TB), hepatitis, and neglected tropical diseases (NTDs).

“It is indeed an honour to address you today and to participate in this important workshop with the expectation that we come out of it stronger with strategies and renewed commitments for the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS, TB, Malaria, Hepatitis and Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) on the continent,” said H.E Dr. Jean Kaseya, Director General of Africa CDC opening the workshop.

Delegates from all 55 African Union (AU) Member States came together reviewed and endorse the Africa CDC’s blueprint for 2024–2027. This plan represents a unified effort to address the continent’s most urgent health challenges by integrating prevention and control strategies into national health systems.

In Africa, infectious diseases continue to have a disproportionate impact, accounting for 94% of global malaria cases and 95% of malaria-related deaths. The continent also carries 40% of the global burden of NTDs, and all African countries face at least one endemic NTD. Yet, the main barriers to progress remain underfunding, weak health systems, limited research, and poor access to treatment.

“We need to brace up to change this narrative by intensifying our efforts to find lasting solutions for the control and eventual elimination of these diseases,” said Dr Kaseya.

The workshop’s key objectives included:

  1. Validating the strategic priorities for disease prevention and control across HIV/AIDS, malaria, TB, hepatitis, and NTDs.
  2. Engaging stakeholders to strengthen multisectoral collaboration.
  3. Finalizing a detailed implementation plan with clear monitoring and evaluation indicators.
  4. Establishing sustainable partnerships to support long-term health system strengthening.

This effort is aligned with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the Africa CDC’s “New Public Health Order,” which focuses on boosting the continent’s self-reliance in health security.

In addition to expert contributions, political leadership will play a critical role, with AU Champions leading key initiatives:

  • Cyril Ramaphosa (South Africa) – Champion for Pandemic Preparedness and Response.
  • Bola Tinubu, President of Nigeria – Champion for Health Workforce and Community Development.
  • Hakainde Hichilema, President of Zambia – Champion for Cholera Elimination.
  • William Ruto, President of Kenya – Champion for Local Manufacturing.

At the end of the workshop, delegates delivered a validated strategic priorities document, alongside a costed implementation plan, setting the stage for more effective health responses across Africa. “The involvement of Member States is transformative,” said Dr Kaseya. “Together, we will create a more resilient, integrated, and inclusive health future for Africa.”

About Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC)

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) is a public health agency of the African Union. It is autonomous and supports member states in strengthening health systems. It also helps improve disease surveillance, emergency response, and disease control.

“…We have no eternal allies, and we have no perpetual enemies. Our interests are eternal and perpetual, and those interests it is our duty to follow” – Lord Palmerston – House of Commons 1848

EI! Exclaimed the host at a radio station on 03/12/24 surprised at the aide to Madam Lydia Seyram Alhassan, MP for Ayawaso West Wuogon saying he did not see the MP distributing items to Prison officers and others.

The MP initially denied: “I don’t even know what you’re talking about; the matter

At the by-election at Ejisu (for only NPP members) there was so much vote-buying to the extent that the MP for Kwadaso, Dr. Kingsley Nyarko was caught ON social media dishing out monies to Electoral Commission officials.

Akufo-Addo will be exiting the Presidency in a few days’ time. What is his legacy? There was so much hope, trust, faith in Akufo-Addo’s Presidency. “I‘ve never been corrupt” he said. And we believed everything he said, having been adherents of the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition. We had discussions on Akufo-Addo’s speeches with Gabby Otchere Darko – but no records were kept.

We were very critical of the Mills-Mahama government of 2008 – 2016 and were quick to point out whatever we thought was wrong in the NDC. We were hard on Mahama when Atta Mills (Asomdweehene) died, even though it was in Atta Mills’s time that we lost our job.

We did all we could to help Akufo-Addo win the 2016 election, least of all, attending and contributing to Party rallies. Then, 2016 came, and with it, the crowning moments in Akufo-Addo’s life. We were ecstatic! We could go to Jubilee House and Parliament House ‘freely’ and share ideas with MPs and Ministers (Amoako Atta, Ignatius Baffour Awuah) and rub shoulders with Akoto Ampaw, Osei Owusu, Asante Bediatuo.

Then, the criticism poured upon Akufo-Addo; bloated Ministerial list (over 120); expensive government (travelling to overseas conference in expensive rented airplane, corruption in government (staff collecting $20,000 before visitors being chaperoned to see the President) bloated contracts, Cecilia Dapaah allegedly keeping $1 million under her bed. Akufo-Addo never did a re-shuffle of his Ministers, so that while a few of his close friends and family members enjoyed the fruits of Nana Akufo-Addo’s success others would be in queue. He would not sack the Finance Minister Dr. Ofori Attah even upon demand by 98 NPP MPs;

The ‘National Cathedral’, now “the most expensive hole” on earth is there as a mark of the kind of administration that Nana Akufo-Addo and his big-time economic wizards have run. Was it not a personal promise to God, after his visit to Jerusalem? With a personal contribution of GH¢100,000.00 the National Cathedral was to be “an avenue to call the nation to prayer, to worship to celebrate and to mourn… an iconic infrastructure for national, regional and international pilgrimage and tourism… to create jobs and that the building would not be a burden on the state…”

And an Ofori-Attah budget had paid off $58m from “Contingency fund” not “Consolidate Fund”.

As Vice-President Bawumia said: “I am like a driver’s mate” (despite the claim by Osafo Maafo that Bawumia was a highly professional man as the chairman of the Economic Team. “Momfa steer no ma me” (Give me the steering wheel). So, after running as Vice-President for eight (8) years, he now qualifies to run for eight (8) years more as President.

And 500 excavators got missing. Dr. Frimpong-Boateng wrote a  report. It appeared Dr. Frimpong-Boateng did not find favour in the eyes of Akufo-Addo, and he went into oblivion.

Kwame Awuah, Esquire who can be described as the “people’s lawyer”: says “Bawumia ye me mmobo”. He pities Bawumia because despite his own showing, Nana Akufo-Addo has not helped him.

The common joke in town now includes the 2016 ‘analysis’ by Bawumia of the failure of the Mahama government: “When the fundamentals are weak, the exchange rate will expose you”. And GH¢ 4.00 was $1.00. “Incompetent”  Mahama.

But in NPPs time when GH¢17.00 was exchanging for $1.00 it was a result of the Russia-Ukraine war  – in spite of the war we had to beg warring Ukraine to send us wheat, and rely on China to support the building of many projects. So, whether the NPP were better managers of the economy than the NDC or not, the cost of living has shot up, and the ordinary Ghanaian finds it very difficult to feed himself and his family. A ball of kenkey selling in Mahama’s time for GH¢1.50 is now GH¢5.00 and the ordinary Kofi Brokeman (toasted plantain) selling at GH¢1.00 per piece in Mahama’s time is now GH¢5.00. And the key to Mahama “medo Nyame” exchange rate had been given to the IGP.

And we are chastising Mahama’s “nkokonkete, nkete”? That was the same way we mocked I. K. Acheampong’s “Operation Feed Yourself” and Dan Lartey’s “Domestication”. What is wrong in urging people to do backyard gardening so that we eat what we produce and stop relying on imported frozen chicken; potatoes, cassava, plantain.

The free SHS? The less said about it the better! We sent our wards to school in the middle part of September. In the middle part of November she called us to come for her because the term had ended and they were to go home on holidays to give room for those in Form One. So we asked: “When are you going back to school”? Answer; “Early February, 2025.

Wow! Meanwhile, the school-children are fed with rice whose quality cannot be guaranteed. Rice imported from India was allegedly re-bagged, into bags without the “country of origin” and having no date of “expiry”. And our children continue to be used as “pawns” in the NPP/NDC imbroglio! And we see on TV a PA (Parent Association) letter to parents; Food Support; GH¢400 (for 2 semesters); PA Dues; GH¢400.00 OE: GH¢250.00. And who cancelled the “T” in PTA (Parent-Teacher Association) to obtain only Parent Association? Are we kidding?

And at a Ghana Bar Association (GBA) Conference recently, the Bar President, Yaw Boafo, Esquire proposed the support of some “well-endowed” parents to the funding of the free SHS. The President Nana Akufo-Addo, a member of the GBA , in a characteristic tintin-tinintin mood retorted: “Those who have money should send their wards to private schools (where they can pay their school fees)” ! Oh, so we “dare” not make suggestions? Where is our democracy drifting to?

But where is the Airport at Cape Coast? Where is the Pwalugu Dam? There can be as many questions as Bawumia posed to Paa Kwesi Arthur, and we know, in his affable, genteel, well-composed manner, Bawumia will explain away the reasons for their non-completion. Forget, one constituency, one $1m; one district, one dam.

And the almighty Galamsey! For the selfish comfort and of a few Ghanaians, galamsey continues unabated. Stylish young Antwi Boasiako (Wontumi) may have had abundance of wealth – not from ‘galamsey’ but by legitimate means. With 2462 still hanging on our necks, and with it the President can give exemption for one to enter the Forest Reserve and mine!

Kwame Bediako says he will give a pathway to the sea to flow from Accra to Kumasi. Christian Kwabena Andrews (GUM) will revive Nkrumah’s developmental spirit.

No 3 Akua Donor (Enye enno no) is on the Electoral Roll though she is no more. Alan Kyerematen’s Transformational Plan has “leadership with integrity”.

Let’s end at this point” if we write everything today, what shall we write next week?

West Ham to decide on coach’s future by weekend

0
Julen Lopetegui joined West Ham in July

West Ham will decide Julen Lopetegui’s immediate future by the weekend.

Lopetegui is under huge pressure following Tuesday’s 3-1 defeat at Leicester and sources say the manager’s future hinges on a club board meeting to be held later this week.

Brought in on a two-year deal to succeed David Moyes in the summer, the former Spain and Real Madrid coach arrived at the London Stadium amid huge expectation.

West Ham spent more than £120m on nine new players in the belief Lopetegui could steer them towards a return to Europe after missing out last season for the first time in four years.

However, £27m Germany striker Niclas Fullkrug is yet to start a Premier League game, £25.5m Brazilian youngster Luis Guilherme has featured for just 11 minutes in two substitute appearances and many of the other new arrivals, including EFL player of the year Crysencio Summerville, have struggled for form.

While there is also scrutiny on technical director Tim Steidten, Lopetegui is the one feeling the heat. The Hammers have managed just one win in five games since the victory over Manchester United on 27 October that triggered the dismissal of United boss Erik ten Hag.

Tuesday’s result left West Ham in 14th position.
