The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has won 16 out of the 18 chairmanship seats in the local government elections in Ondo State.

The Chairman of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC), Joseph Aeemo, declared this at the headquarters of the commission in Akure on Sunday.

He noted that while the rescheduled election is being held in Ondo West LGA, results are being expected from Owo LGA.

Only twelve political parties contested for the chairmanship and councillorship offices in the elections held on Saturday.

Ahead of the poll, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) announced its decision to withdraw from the election, saying it does not believe in the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission to conduct a credible election.

The names of the 12 political parties contesting in the election include: Action Alliance, Action Democratic Party, Action People’s Party, All Progressives Congress, All Progressives Grand Alliance, Boot Party, and Labour Party.

Others include the National Rescue Party, New Nigeria Peoples Party, Social Democratic Party, Young Progressive Party, and Zenith Labour Party.

Before the Saturday poll, the last council election in the state was conducted on August 23, 2020, with the tenure of the elected council officials elapsing on August 22, 2023.

Since then, the administration of the 18 council areas of the state has been managed by civil servants, specifically the Heads of Local Government Administrations.

However, after several postponements, the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission finally fixed January 18, 2025, for the conduct of the election.

Fuel tanker explosion kills dozens of people

Niger state tanker explosion

A tanker has exploded after crashing in Nigeria, killing 77 people who had rushed to collect fuel from the scene, authorities say.

The tanker overturned and spilled its contents in the Suleja area of North Central Niger state on Saturday.

It exploded moments after people began scooping up fuel, killing dozens and leaving 25 others injured, including rescuers, officials said.

Fuel tanker explosions and accidents are common in the country – often caused by the poor state of roads and badly maintained vehicles.

Those injured in Saturday’s explosion are being treated in nearby hospitals, the emergency management agency said.

Nigeria has seen a number of similar incidents in recent months.

Two weeks ago, a fuel tanker involved in a crash exploded in the oil-rich Delta state, killing at least five people, and at least 153 people died in an explosion while trying to collect leaking petrol in October.

Fuel prices have increased by more than 400% in the last 18 months following bold economic policies by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, including the removal of long-standing fuel subsidies.

The changes have put millions of people into poverty, with many forced to turn to desperate measures for survival.

The government has said its policies are aimed at strengthening the economy.

Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston may have been one of the most acclaimed singers of her generation but when David Roberts was asked to be her bodyguard he wasn’t exactly star-struck.

“I said ‘Whitney Houston, who’s he?’,” recalled the former police sergeant turned close protection officer.

He went on to spend six years protecting the late superstar as she toured the world and believes he was the inspiration for the 1992 film The Bodyguard, starring Houston and Kevin Costner.

“It was an eye-opener, bearing in mind I’m from a farming community on the tip of north Wales, the Llyn Peninsula.

“And here I am travelling the world right with arguably one of the most famous people in the world so it was quite an interesting experience,” said the 72-year-old, speaking from his home in Palm Beach, Florida.

Twenty-five years on he has written a book about his time with the star who died aged 48 in 2012.

David joined the RAF Police in 1968 and served in Northern Ireland before joining North Wales Police in 1972.

He later transferred to the Met Police, concluding his service in 1988 as a sergeant providing protection for visiting dignitaries and heads of state.

It was while working for the American embassy in London in 1988 he first met Houston after she flew into the UK.

Rex Omar tipped for Deputy Minister of Tourism and Creative Arts position

0
Rex Omar

Media personality Kojo Preko Dankwa has endorsed renowned highlife singer Rex Owusu Marfo, known as Rex Omar, for nomination to the position of Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts.

Speaking in a conversation on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning Show regarding President John Dramani Mahama’s appointment of a new creative arts minister, Mr. Dankwah, who is also the President of the Foundation of Concerned Arts Professionals (FOCAP), delineated that, considering the effort Rex Omar has put into ensuring the vibrancy of the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO), his experience in the creative industry, and his role in representing the sector during the NDC campaign ahead of the 2024 elections, he is the right person to assist the minister-designate, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, in managing the affairs of the ministry.

“This man travelled to 12 out of the 16 regions to really meet creatives. This man really was able to gather creatives within the areas. Even if he was doing data, I’m sure by this time he could be able to tell us the number of creatives that we have.

This same man was the party’s lead when it comes to creative when they started the election; I mean for the presidential campaign team, he was the lead for the creatives. So, there was some expectation that was given to him from party level,” Mr. Dankwah explained.

Despite his expectation that Rex Omar would occupy the main position, the FOCAP president added that all hope is not lost, as he is rooting for the former GHAMRO president to be selected as the deputy minister.

He based his suggestion on how Rex Omar has effortlessly worked hard for the party’s victory in the polls, particularly within the creative arts sector.
