Otumfuo Hosts Yagbonwura In A Historic Royal Visit To Manhyia Palace

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, last Wednesday (the fifth Awukudae Festival of the year) hosted the Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I at the Manhyia Palace, during a historic royal visit.

The Yagbonwura is the supreme ruler of the Gonja Traditional Area in the Savanna Region, while Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is the Overlord of the Ashanti Kingdom.

The occasion, which primarily sought to strengthen the Asante-Gonja relationship, brought together traditional authorities, government officials and distinguished guests, culminating in display of royalty and celebration of diverse cultural heritage, unity and traditional values towards national cohesion.

The Yagbonwura arrived at Manhyia Palace with a delegation of more than 100 chiefs, dignitaries, government officials and prominent personalities including Damongowura Kelly Seidu Boresa I, Mankpanwura Achode Borenyi I, Kulawwura Kotokyi Borewunche I, Kekpandewura Shaibu Baba Mumuni Kanyiti I, Salisu Be-Awuribe and Alhaji Yusif Sulemana.

The two traditional rulers exchanged gifts to reflect the longstanding bond between the two kingdoms and reaffirmed their shared commitment to preserving Ghana’s cultural heritage and strengthening inter-kingdom relations and the longstanding fraternal ties between the Asante Kingdom and the Gonja Kingdom.

Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I presented the Asantehene with a rare and sacred elephant tusk – an artefact traditionally reserved for exceptional occasions, along with hand-woven textiles, assorted drinks and kola nuts.

The Overlord of Gonjaland, Yagbonwura, called for traditional rulers to guide communities toward peace and prosperity while preserving customs.

Otumfuo welcomes Yagbonwura to the Manhyia Palace

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II indicated his intention to make a reciprocal visit to Gonjaland, signalling the beginning of a renewed and active exchange between the two royal houses.

Otumfuo’s planned visit to Gonjaland is expected to carry similar ceremonial and diplomatic weight, continuing what the Manhyia Palace gathering has set in motion to deepen the bond between the two royal kingdoms.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, leading the Regional Security Council, attended the high-profile meeting between Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, the Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, at the Manhyia Palace.

Dr Amoakohene’s presence, alongside Savannah Regional Minister, Salisu Be‑Awuribe and other senior officials signalled government’s support for the objectives of the visit to promote peace, strengthen traditional leadership and explore cooperation on socio‑economic development and tourism.
