National Scholarship Secretariat assists 10,000 students annually

Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, the Registrar of the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat (GSS) has announced that his outfit offers a total of 10,000 scholarships to students every year.

According to him 60,000 students have benefited from government sponsorship for tertiary Education through the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat over the past six years.

Dr. Agyemang explained while giving the keynote address at the Matriculation ceremony of the Tepa Nursing and Midwifery Training College that the mission of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat utilises government funds, GETFund and donor support for the provision of Scholarships to deserving students and qualified workers at a minimum access cost for human resource development for the purpose of national growth and development.

He said, however, that the current focus of the Scholarships Secretariat is Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and with this focus 70% of Scholarships are strictly for STEM Programmes, of which nursing is an essential component.

He announced a new partnership brokered by Ghana Scholarship Secretariat with the Tepa Nursing and Midwifery Training College, under which deserving students and staff of the college would be considered for financial support, as directed by the Chief of staff.

Dr. Agyemang, therefore, urged management of Tepa Nursing and Midwifery Training College to liaise with the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat for the operationalisation of the Chief of Staff’s directive.

Dr. Agyemang stressed the importance for student nurses to explore opportunities created by the government to finance academic work.

The GSS Registrar said the government is delivering on the largest investment in the healthcare infrastructure by the construction of regional hospitals in the six newly created regions, the Ghana Centre for infectious disease control for each of the three ecological Coastal, Northern and Middle belt zones, construction of 88 standard designed 100-bed hospitals with accommodation for doctors and nurses in the districts without hospitals.
