Mother burns daughter over GH₡5 ‘apio’ cash

The Kato police in the Berekum Municipality have arrested a 31-year-old mother for allegedly burning her 12-year-old daughter, using a hot electric iron.

The crime of the daughter was that she misplaced an amount of GH₡5 meant for the purchase of local gin, akpeteshie, and cigarette.

The Chronicle gathered that the mother, in the early hours of Sunday, June 18, 2023 sent the child to buy her the substances, but she misplaced the money on her way and did not return home with the cigarette and akpeteshie.

The reasons assigned by the victim for failing to come home with the cigarette and the akpeteshie did not go down well with her mother.

The angry mum plugged in an electric iron and when it became hot, she applied it on the chest of the victim, leading to burns on the breast. The cry for mercy by the victim went unheard.

According to the victim, her father had gone to work when this happened.

A passerby, who heard the plea for mercy from the girl, reported the issue to the police, leading to the arrest of the mother. The police are preparing the suspect for court.
