A workshop on Digital Content Creation and Mini-Video Blogging on Free Movement and Migration in West Africa for Media Practitioners has been held in Takoradi.

The workshop was aimed at strengthening the capacity of Journalists, reporters, bloggers and communication officers to utilise Mini-Video blogging tools and social media platforms to promote informed public discourse on migration and regional integration.

The workshop, which was under the theme “Reframing narratives on Free Movement of persons and migration in West Africa”, was organised by Media Response (Ghana) and jointly funded by the European Union and the ECOWAS Commission. Participants were given extensive education on ethical journalism and practical digital skills necessary to produce accurate and compelling digital content on migration reporting in West Africa.

The ECOWAS Protocol on free movement of persons, Right to Residence and Establishment provides the Legal framework for facilitating cross-border mobility, economic cooperation and regional solidarity among member states.

However, despite this framework, public discourse on migration often remains influenced by misinformation, sensationalism, stereotypes and limited understanding of migration governance structures.

Delivering an address, the Project Manager for Media Response (Ghana), Samuel Doodo hoped that the workshop would contribute to a balanced public discourse on contemporary migration dynamics in Ghana and West Africa.

He noted that well informed media practitioners would give accurate reportage on the rights and responsibilities of ECOWAS citizens who migrate to neighbouring countries.
