Man, 27, remanded for allegedly stealing ECG cables

A 27-year-old man, Masaudu Fuseini was on Thursday, April 28, 2024, remanded into prison custody for allegedly stealing cables belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (ECG). A Koforidua Circuit Court, presided over by Miss Asare Anima, ordered Fuseini to replace the stolen cables, valued over GH¢9,000 and show proof of replacement on his second appearance in court on April 8, 2024.

The suspect has pleaded guilty to the charges of stealing.

Police Inspector Elorm Arku Klaye told the court that Fuseini was arrested at Klo-Agogo, a community in the Asesewa District of the Eastern Region operational area of ECG on Monday, March 25, 2024.

According to her, the suspect, who resides at Nkurakan in the Asesewa District, was seen cutting some cables belonging to the ECG in some parts of the Town and in the process, was nabbed by members of a watchdog committee set up by the Assembly member for the area.

The suspect, upon arrest, led the police and the watchdog committee to the spot where he kept the stolen cables he cut from the poles.

The arrest of Masaudu Fuseini has come at a time where the ECG is confronted with the challenge of transformer and cable thefts in the Eastern Region in recent times, with at least nine (9) transformers having been vandalised by suspected criminals this year.

The Eastern Region General Manager of ECG, Ing. Mrs. Sariel A. Etwire has, therefore, expressed concern about the incidence of cable thefts and transformer vandalisation in the Region.

She commended the police for the swift response, and the watchdog committee at Klo-Agogo for facilitating the arrest of Fuseini and appealed to other communities to emulate the set example.

The Eastern Regional General Manager of ECG said transformer and cable thefts disrupt the mission of the company to supply reliable power supply services to customers, hence urged the Communities to mobilise themselves and support ECG to protect its installations.
