The Lagos State Government on Saturday decried the growing rate of child abuse, announcing its readiness to prosecute the perpetrators.

Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, Executive Secretary, Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency spoke at the Parents Association Conference on Safeguarding and Child Protection at Awori Ajeromi Grammar School in Agboju, NAN reports.

Represented by the Head, Psychology Department DSVA, Olive Oluwagbemileke, Vivour-Adeniyi observed that abuses were going on even in the homes of the victims.

The official vowed that the Lagos government would no longer condone the situation and would ensure the prosecution of the culprits.

The DSVA said its interaction with parents was to educate them on the danger of punishment which has not been an effective tool in correcting children’s bad attitudes.

Vivour-Adeniyi lamented that abuses such as physical and sexual violence, negligence, food deprivation, among others have been on the increase over the years.

”If we don’t know that our children are being abused, imagine the population of children who are suffering under this menace,” she noted.

The Executive Secretary advised parents to watch out for symptoms of abuse and be familiar with the laws and policies protecting the young.
