The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Jomoro constituency in the Western region, Dorcas AffoToffey, has presented some building materials to support the construction and completion of a two unit classroom block to serve both kindergarten ‘one’ and ‘two’ pupils of Sowodadim Electoral Area Compound Basic in Jomoro.
The building materials include 20-tons of iron rods and 20-bags of cement. The MP, who presented the items, pledged to give further support in the event the materials were not adequate.
For the past two years, Western File gathered that Kindergarten 1 and 2 pupils of Compound Basic School have been attending classes without permanent classrooms.
The two school structure that hitherto was housing the pupils collapsed during a heavy downpour, compelling the school authorities to put all the pupils in one block.
According to the teachers in the school, even before the eventual collapse of the two blocks, the structures were like death traps for the pupils.
“We realised it could cause a disaster so we stopped the pupils”, one of the teachers, Madam Adria Amani explained to the media.
Madam Adria Amani explained that ever since the two buildings collapsed two years ago, they had converted one of the classrooms and combined for both KG ‘1’ and ‘2’ pupils to use as their classroom.
This, she explained, made teaching and learning difficult because the children were packed in one classroom block.
Madam Amani expressed the hope, however, that the gesture from the MP has come at the right time, since it will help in the speedy construction of the two classroom block to enable the pupils have better classrooms to study.
The Odikro of the electoral area, Nana Ngwa, assured the MP that he would ensure that the building materials are used for the purpose for which they were procured.
The Odikro expressed gratitude to the MP and urged her to help lobby for the construction of the deplorable roads in the area.
