An appeal has gone to the Second Lady, Hajia Samira Bawumia, to assist with the release of a final year Senior High School (SHS) student being detained at the University of Ghana Medical Center (UGMC) over non-payment of medical bills. The bill is GH¢15,000.00 (Fifteen thousand Ghana Cedis).
The 15-year old student, Josephine Koryo Nartey, is in her final year at the Manya Krobo Senior High School at Odumase Krobo, in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region.
Making the appeal on Thursday through The Chronicle, the mother, Elizabeth Terkperki Sackey, stated that on Saturday March 16, 2023 at about 8.30pm the daughter went to buy drugs at a nearby Pharmacy.
She further stated that whilst returning home, a motorbike crashed into her, sending her to the ground, in front of her family house, resulting in serious head injuries.
She was first rushed to the St Martin’s Hospital at Agormanya in the same municipality.
Due to the gravity of the injury, she was referred to the UGMC to continue with treatment.
On Saturday, March 30, 2023 when she was supposed to be discharged, there wasan outstanding bill of GHC 15,000.00 (Fifteen thousand Ghana Cedis) as a result of which she was detained until the money is redeemed.
The single mother of two is, therefore, appealing to the Second Lady to come to the aid of the student-patient.
A reliable source at the UGMC, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the story to the paper when contacted.
According to the source, they wanted the parent to foot part of the bill to enable the facility to enter into a payment plan, but that has not been forthcoming.
