Team Greater Accra Region has been crowned the overall winner of the 2026 Channel One TV and Citi FM Literacy Challenge after a gripping final round that kept the contest finely balanced until the end.
Represented by Neriah Gyamfi, Jenelle-Abrielle Ofori and Sarah Augusta Akosua Otoo, the Greater Accra team topped the final standings with 88 points to claim the ultimate prize, completing an impressive run through the various stages of the competition.
The victory capped a remarkable campaign for the team, which had earlier secured its place in the Top Four after defeating the Upper East Region 58–45 on Day One of the competition.
The Northern Region finished strongly on 85 points to take the first runner-up position, while the Bono Region secured the second runner-up position with 68 points. The Volta Region placed fourth with 64 points, bringing an intense four-team battle to a close.
The Top Four line-up was decided after the Eastern Region bowed out in the Mega Challenge. Eastern finished on 35 points, while Volta and Bono each recorded 36 points, with Greater Accra and Northern Region ending that stage on 38 points apiece.
With the finalists separated by narrow margins, the final round provided the decisive test. Greater Accra held its nerve to finish on top and lift the championship trophy.
The championship brings a successful conclusion to a competition that brought together 30 outstanding young contestants aged between 11 and 15, representing the Volta, Central, Northern, Western, Upper East, Bono, Eastern, Upper West, Ashanti and Greater Accra regions.
The contestants had earned their places after excelling in the Level II Aptitude Test held on Sunday, August 16, following the earlier essay stage of the competition.
The aptitude test assessed their knowledge, comprehension, critical thinking and ability to apply concepts to everyday situations before the competition moved from individual performance to teamwork.
At the regional team stage, contestants were required to combine knowledge, strategy and collaboration as they tackled challenging questions under pressure.
The competition tested the young contestants beyond their individual academic abilities, requiring effective communication, collaboration, quick thinking, problem-solving and decision-making as they worked together.
The winning Greater Accra team will receive a total cash prize of GH¢15,000, with each of its three members taking home GH¢5,000.
Each member will also receive a trophy, certificate, gold medal and laptop.
Individual excellence
Beyond the team championship, the 2026 Literacy Challenge also recognises outstanding individual performance.
An Overall Outstanding Contestant will be selected from the three members of the winning team based on their cumulative performance in the essay, aptitude test and regional team challenge.
The best-performing contestant will receive an additional GH¢5,000, bringing their total cash prize to GH¢10,000, together with a special plaque.
The overall individual winner will also receive the trophy, certificate, gold medal and laptop awarded to members of the winning team.
The 2026 Literacy Challenge is powered by Channel One TV and Citi FM, with support from Prospectus Ghana Limited, SIC Insurance PLC, Advocate Publishing, Tema Oil Refinery, Deli Group and La Palm Royal Beach Hotel.
The competition continues to provide a platform for young students to develop confidence, broaden their knowledge and demonstrate critical thinking, creativity, teamwork and effective communication.
With Greater Accra emerging as the 2026 champion after a closely fought final, the team has secured its place in the history of the Literacy Challenge.
