Kweku Ofori Asiamah, the Transport Minister, has commissioned a sports complex constructed at the cost of a little over GHc4 million by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) for the Tema Traditional Council (TTC).
Named after the late Paramount Chief of Tema, the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex is a FIFA standard facility with an astro turf, spectators’ stands, two dressing rooms with toilet facilities, volleyball and basketball courts, a playground for kids and a VIP lounge.
Additionally, it has floodlights, making the facility ready for sports and other events in the night.
Commending the GPHA, first for the huge investment it had made in putting up the complex, Mr Asiamah, in his keynote address explained that the facility was based on the assessment need of the TTC.
“I, therefore, want to thank the TTC and the people of Tema for their high level of collaboration to get this sports complex completed,” he noted.
He added that, the facility would enable the youth of the area to keep fit to be able to go about their daily chores “and on this note, I want to again commend the GPHA for the many corporate social responsibilities and projects it continues to carry out in other parts of the country.”
Lastly, he charged TTC, the Tema Metropolitan Assembly and all stakeholders in the Metropolis to ensure the regular maintenance of the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex.
In a brief statement, Michael Luguje, the Director General of GPHA, paid glowing tribute to the late Nii Kraku II for his major role in ensuring that vast land was available for the construction of the facility.
He said the sports complex with the FIFA standard pitch and all the other facilities cost GHc4,066,102 adding that the Authority would sink GHc900,000 to build concrete fence walls around it.
Nii Amarh Somponu II, Stool Secretary for the TTC, on behalf of the Council, thanked the GPHA for meeting the assessment needs of the TTC and the late Nii Adjei Kraku II who led the initiative.
The construction of the project started in July 2019 and expressing his elation to see the project fully completed and commissioned, Nii Somponu II said Tema would churn out football stars again to feed Ghana’s local and national teams.
“Sports make the youth responsible for their community and nation and we hope that this sports complex will bring out the talent in our youth and make them responsible for the development of Tema and Ghana,” he noted.
In conclusion, Nii Somponu II said the TTC would ensure that the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex is maintained.
