The Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament’s Finance Committee, Dr Gideon Boako, has accused the government of attempting to rewrite the story behind Ghana’s economic recovery.
He insisted that the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) own assessments contradict claims that the turnaround is solely the result of the current administration’s economic management.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile program on Saturday, July 25, 2026 during discussions on the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review presented by Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the Tano North MP said the government’s central narrative does not stand up to independent scrutiny.
According to him, while the IMF has praised the government’s implementation of reforms after assuming office, the Fund has consistently attributed Ghana’s improving macro-economic performance to a combination of continued implementation of the IMF-supported programme, debt restructuring, fiscal consolidation, structural reforms and favourable external conditions.
Dr Boako argued that the government’s attempt to portray the IMF programme as merely a framework and debt restructuring as simply creating fiscal space ignores what the Fund itself has repeatedly stated in its programme reviews.
“The evidence simply does not support the conclusion that superior economic management alone explains Ghana’s recovery.
“The IMF recognises implementation by the current administration, but it also recognises that debt restructuring, fiscal reforms, structural reforms and external conditions all played decisive roles. You cannot erase those facts and claim exclusive ownership of the recovery,” he said.
He maintained that economic credibility depends on presenting the full picture rather than selectively interpreting international assessments to fit a political narrative.
