The Akatsi-North District Director of Food and Agriculture, Madam Bridget Yayra Sah, says her outfit is promoting agriculture in the district. She, has, therefore, advised farmers to embrace innovative practices being introduced to enhance their farming activities.
According to her, farmers in 12 communities had already been educated on how to do modern agriculture and that the programme would be extended to other parts of the district to ensure that every farmer benefits.
Madam Sah, who made this known at the District Farmers Day celebration at Ave-Xevi, said the directorate would continue to upgrade the skills and knowledge of farmers to enable them to increase their yields.
She explained that farmers had also been educated on appropriate use of agro-chemicals and fertilisers and that, 492 hectors of maize farms were sprayed to guide the farmers.
She said the Directorate had similarly introduced an improved variety of cassava and introduced farmers to improved methods of rice cultivation, as well as ongoing education on how to process tomatos into tomato paste.
According to the Director, farmers were also taken through best environmental practices to enable them to conserve the environment through sound agricultural practices.
The Akatsi-North District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Simon Peter Kofi Ofosu, commended farmers for their hard work over the years and said government would continue to recognise and honour them.
Mr Ofosu said effective pet control and use of fertiliser in addition to innovative methods of farming would enable farmers to have positive impact on their activities, saying Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) should be embraced by the youth.
The DCE said since 80 percent of the population in the District are farmers, the Assembly had created market for their farm produce.
