Ex-lover fined for inflicting machete wounds on ‘baby father’

The West Ada District Court, Sege, presided over by Her Worship Victoria Akua Ghansah, as Magistrate, has pronounced David Nomotey Nartey and Esther Puplampu, the ex-lover of Clement Gator Ackwerh, the complainant, guilty of causing harm.

The court, therefore, sentenced the two accused persons to 150 penalty units each, and a fine of GH¢1,000 each as compensation to Clement Ackwerh, a farmer, resident at Hwakpo.

The judgement was read in open court and translated to the accused persons in their local dialect, Dangme.
Five other accused persons who were also standing trial in the case were acquitted and discharged by the court.

After the judgement, Clement Ackwerh told The Chronicle that he was dissatisfied with the weight of the fine, given the amount of money he spent travelling to and from court for four years and his medical expenses, but “I am excited that a case which started in July 2020 had eventually ended.”

Brief facts

David Nomotey Nartey, Solomon Nartey, Emmanuel Sabbah, Esther Puplampu, Agorvor Daitey, Buer Puplampu and Iddrisu Puplampu were put in the dock at the Sege District Court for allegedly causing harm to Clement Ackwerh, a crop farmer. All are residents of Hwakpo in the West Ada District.

On April 28, 2020 the accused persons reportedly attacked Clement Ackwerh on his farmland at Hwakpo and reportedly inflicted machete wounds on his body and palm.

Despite the severe beatings and injuries, Clement managed to escape on his motorbike.
The victim later reported the incident to the Sege District Police Command, where he was handed a police medical form for treatment.
The police, after their investigations, processed the seven for court, with the first hearing on July 27, 2020.
