Eric Nkansah confirmed as D-G of GES

The appointment of Dr Eric Nkansah, as the Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), has been confirmed.

He had been acting since October 2022, despite stiff opposition from pre-tertiary teacher unions.

A letter sighted by The Chronicle, dated January 4, 2023, informed all regional directors of GES to take note of the development.

The letter was signed by the Acting Director of the Human Resource Management Department (HRMD) of GES, Angela Frimpomaa Nkansah.

It reads in part, “Management wishes to inform you that Dr Eric Nkansah,  Acting  Director General has officially been confirmed as the Director General of the Service. In effect, all correspondence and memoranda should be addressed as such. Congratulations to Dr Eric Nkansah, Director General, Ghana Education Service!”

BACKGROUND

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo appointed Dr Nkansah as Acting Director General in October 2022. About two weeks into his acting as the director, three teacher unions – Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), on November 4, 2022, opposed his appointment.

They argued on the grounds that he was a banker and did not rise through the ranks of GES.
