The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has undertaken surprise monitoring visits to selected senior high schools in the Western Region to assess the reporting and settling-in process of first-year students.
The Minister visited Tarkwa Senior High School (TASCO), Asankragwa Senior High School and Asankragwa Technical Institute as part of efforts to ensure that newly admitted students begin the academic year under appropriate conditions.
The visits, which extended into the night, formed part of the Ministry’s monitoring exercise following the commencement of the reporting of first-year students to senior high schools across the country.
At the schools, Mr Iddrisu interacted with students and staff and inspected aspects of the arrangements put in place for the new entrants.
His unannounced presence reportedly generated excitement among both students and staff, with the Minister emphasizing the need for first-year students to settle into their new academic environment seamlessly and focus on their studies.
At Asankragwa Senior High School, the Minister announced plans to include eggs and chicken in meals served to students, signalling an effort to improve the nutritional content of meals provided under the second-cycle education system.
The announcement comes as schools receive large numbers of first-year students following the latest admission exercise, placing renewed attention on accommodation, feeding, teaching and learning facilities, as well as the general welfare of students.
The Minister’s monitoring exercise is expected to continue in the Central Region, where he is scheduled to visit schools to assess preparations and the integration of first-year students.
The visits form part of the government’s broader efforts to monitor the implementation of senior high school education and ensure that students entering the system have the necessary conditions to commence their academic work effectively.
Mr Iddrisu’s decision to undertake surprise visits, including working late into the night at some of the schools, underscores the Ministry’s stated focus on obtaining first-hand information on the conditions confronting schools and students during the crucial opening period of the academic year.
