The Tema Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has lost a transformer which was allegedly vandalised by thieves. They made away with some components of the transformer and associated items.
The transformer, a 100KVA, 33/0.433KV, valued at about GH¢75,000 was discovered to have been destroyed on the morning of Saturday, September 6, 2024, during a routine patrol to check on the network to fix a power outage situation.
The transformer, located at the Asutsuare Junction on the Tema-Akosombo road, had some parts stolen, while other components lay scattered on the floor.
The ECG patrol team at the site reported the theft to the Doryumu Police Station.
The Regional Engineer for ECG Tema Region, Michael Buabin, indicated that “the damage to the transformer caused inconveniences to customers, as some areas had been without energy supply, due to the damage. It also compels the company to redirect its revenue from other projects into replacing the stolen transformer.”
He indicated that “the damaged transformer would cost about GH¢75,000 while the associated components would raise the cost to over GH¢100,000 – an amount which could have gone into other developmental projects by the ECG.”
While he was appealing to the public to support the ECG to protect its installations and to report any persons seen damaging or trying to sell off such items to the police, another report was lodged that a tipper truck, with registration number GN 258-11, at Dawa, along the Tema-Aflao road, had ran into one of ECG’s poles, cutting power supply to a number customers.
The damaged pole is part of the electricity distributor’s new network being constructed to support supply to Dawa, Ada and surrounding areas.
Engineer Buabin said: “The tubular pole bent and it would cost the ECG about GH¢22,000 to replace it. The company has to work quickly to replace it as soon as possible and to restore power supply to the affected areas. While at it, we will report this issue to the police for further investigation and action.”
