Queen Máxima of the Netherlands will pay a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the Asantehemaa, Nana Yaa Akyaa II, at Manhyia Palace today.
Her scheduled visit to Manhyia Palace will coincide with the observation of Awukudae, one of the traditional days in the Asante calendar.
The visit is expected to further strengthen the longstanding historical and diplomatic ties between the Dutch Royal Family and the Asante Kingdom.
The relationship dates back several years, with notable royal engagements in 2002. In April of that year, the then Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and his wife, Princess Máxima, visited Manhyia Palace and were received by the Asantehene.
Later in June 2002, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and his wife, Lady Julia Osei Tutu, visited the Netherlands, where they were received by the then Queen Beatrix.
Queen Máxima’s visit to Manhyia Palace will mark another significant moment in the relationship between the Netherlands and the Asante Kingdom.
The royal visit to the Manhyia Palace forms part of the Dutch Queen’s official trip to Ghana.
Her Royal Majesty Máxima arrived in Ghana on Monday, in her capacity as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Health (UNSGSA) on a four-day official visit.
Her schedule centers on embedding financial health into government policies, expanding agricultural financing, improving budgeting and savings tools, and making long-term investments affordable for households.
Her itinerary during four day visit includes meeting with President John Mahama and
leadership figures including Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson, Food and Agriculture Minister Eric Opoku, Bank of Ghana Governor Johnson Pandit Asiama.
She will engage with everyday financial service users, government representatives, and development leaders as well as tour agricultural and business initiatives in and around Accra.
