Cop shot dead by senior colleague in Western North

A senior police officer with the rank of an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) has reportedly shot dead a junior policeman at the rank of a Constable following an altercation.

The incident, which occurred in the Western North Region on Friday, was said to have taken place when a team of policemen, including the killer and the deceased, were returning to Wiawso from Bibiani.

The police have confirmed the incident.

In an official statement, the police confirmed the aforementioned details and indicated that the victim was rushed to hospital for medical attention, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The police, however, have assured the family of the deceased of thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding the gunning down of the Constable by his senior colleague.

An official release, signed by ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, indicated that the Inspector–General of Police (IGP) had already dispatched a team to the region to assess the situation and interact with the personnel.

The team to assess the situation was led by Commissioner of Police Mrs. Habiba Twumasi Sarpong, who is the Director General of Police Welfare.

Additionally, another team of police Management Board Members has been dispatched by the IGP to visit the family of the deceased and formally notify them of his passing.

Led by COP Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, Director General/Administration, they were expected to commiserate with family and also assure them of a thorough investigation into the incident.

According to the release: “A police clinical psychologist has been assigned to the family to support them through this difficult time”.

“Another team of clinical psychologists has also been deployed to the Western [North] Regional Police Command to offer psychosocial support for the personnel of the command”. It added.

The suspected killer, whose identity has been kept secret by the police, has been detained as part of the investigation processes.
