Nana Boakye Yam Ababio, Chief of Nkwantakese, has appealed to the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Mr. Samuel Nartey George, to urgently revamp the dormant Digital Learning Centre following the relocation of the regional office from Nkwantakese to the Kwadaso Municipality.
The Chief made the appeal when the Minister visited his palace as part of a working visit to the Ashanti region with Directors of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) to assess the Nkwantakese Digital Learning Centre.
Nana Boakye Yam commended the Minister for his selflessness and commitment to duty and urged him to ensure the success of the government’s One Million Coders Programme to benefit the teeming youth towards reduction in unemployment.
He recommended the establishment of a campus by one of the universities at the Nkwantakese Digital Learning Centre to open up the development of the Afigya Kwabre North District.
He assured the Minister that the traditional authorities will always support him in all his endeavours to make the centre vibrant and operational. He entreated the Ministry to intensify awareness creation, noting that the centre is not meant for the community alone, but anyone interested in learning ICT, including students from the three public Senior High Schools within the district, can use the facility.
The District Chief Executive for Afigya Kwabre North, Mr. Justice Agumah, promised to tar the road networks to Nkwantakese and put up new Senior High School buildings for the community to improve the standard of education in the area.
Mr Samuel Nartey George for his part said he had been informed that Nana was reclaiming the piece of land on which the GIFEC centre had been sited. He said the government was committed to revamping the centre to make it more operational for the benefit of residents of Nkwantakese and surrounding communities.
He expressed worry over the attitude of some members of the communities that fail to show interest in learning ICT after facilities have been provided. He promised to donate 30 computers to the Nkwantakese centre, adding that any further support will depend on the commitment and eagerness of residents to learn ICT.
