Caterer remanded over alleged possession, sale of narcotic drugs

The Circuit Court in Accra has remanded a 52-year-old caterer, King Solomon Mensah Bonsu, over allegations of possessing and storing substances suspected to be narcotic drugs for trafficking and sale.

The accused was brought before the court on four charges, including unlawful control of narcotic drugs, engaging in prohibited business relating to narcotic drugs and sale of unregistered drugs and products.

His plea was not taken. He was remanded in custody and is expected to reappear before the court on October 20, 2026.

The prosecution, led by ASP Raymond Ackon, told the court that the alleged offences occurred on September 30, 2026, at Tantra Hills in the Greater Accra Region.

According to the charge sheet, the accused was allegedly found in control of 10 paper wraps of whitish substance, 47 toffee-like substances, two tennis-ball-sized quantities of hard dark substance, dried plant material concealed in a polythene bag, two oval-shaped quantities of dried plant material and two plain rubber wraps containing dark substance suspected to be narcotic drugs.

The prosecution further alleged that Bonsu possessed and stored for the purpose of sale 74 small bottles containing a liquid substance, popularly known as “Sobolo,” 10 other small bottles and four large bottles of liquid substance, suspected to have been laced with narcotic drugs.

He is also accused of offering for sale 20 green tablets of ecstasy, four brown tablets of ecstasy and one pink tablet, allegedly not registered with the Food and Drugs Authority.

The charges were brought under the Narcotics Control Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1019) and the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851).The court subsequently remanded Bonsu to custody pending his next appearance on October 20.

In another development, A 25-year-old driver, Emmanuel Owusu, has been arraigned before the Circuit Court 1 in Accra for allegedly offering unregistered drugs for sale at Madina Ritz Junction.

Owusu is facing a charge of sale of an unregistered product, contrary to Section 118(1) of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851).He was, however, not required to enter a plea when he appeared before the court.

The court has adjourned the case to October 14, 2026.

According to the prosecution, Owusu was arrested on September 30, 2026, at about 10:30 p.m. during an anti-narcotics operation conducted by police officers attached to the IGP Special Operations Team at the Police Headquarters.

The police allegedly retrieved six bottles of Benylin with codeine and five bottles of UN1070 E942 Nitrous Oxide Food Grade, popularly known as “laughing gas”, from him.

The prosecution said the products were suspected to be unregistered by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA).The exhibits are expected to be forwarded to the FDA for examination and a report.

Owusu, who resides at Madina in Accra, was identified as a driver.

The case has been adjourned to October 14 for further proceedings.
