Businessman fined GH¢8,400 for unlawful possession of weapon

An Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Afia Owusua Appiah, has fined a businessman, Rufai Yusif, 700 penalty units (GH¢8,400) for possession of firearms and ammunition without lawful authority.

The court further directed that failure on the part of Yusif to pay the fine would result in two years imprisonment.

Yusif was arraigned before the court last week Thursday, and was fined the same day, after having pleaded guilty to the charge.

The case was presented to the court by Chief Inspector Samuel Ahiabor on behalf of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Emmanuel Nyamekye.

According to C/Insp Ahiabor, Yusif was arrested with two foreign pistols with the make BRUNI MOD 92 Kel 9mm and BRUNI MOD 84, as well as 49 3830 auto ammunition at Gambaga in the North East Region upon a tip-off.

He said the accused was arrested in his private pick-up truck with registration number GC 2190-20 with the pistols, ammunition and a cash of GH¢155,600.

The prosecuting officer added that when the arresting officers questioned Yusif about the pistols and the ammunition, he could not produce any lawful documents to back his possession, but stated that the money was meant to pay his suppliers.

The prosecutor further told the court to consider the volatile nature of that part of the country, as far as security of the citizenry was concerned.

Court jails bus conductor 18 months for stealing Infinix phone

In another development Clement Adjei Adjetey, aged 27 years and a bus conductor, has been jailed 18 months by an Accra Circuit Court for stealing an Infinix mobile phone valued at GH¢500.00. Clement was sentenced yesterday after pleading guilty simplicita.

The court, presided over by Afia Owusua Appiah, was told by the prosecuting officer, Inspector Wisdom Alorsu, that the complainant in the case was one Joseph, a Uber driver and residing at Teshie.

He indicated that on September 9, 2022, and at about 6:00am, the complainant had a request from a client at Teshie, and on reaching the pickup point at the Star Oil Filling Station area, Joseph parked the car to wait for his passenger.

The police prosecutor added that while he was waiting, Adjetey and one Jana Ashie, currently at large, emerged from back of the car and forcibly took the Infinix XOS phone from his hand.

According to him, the convict and his accomplice, after stealing the phone, took to their heels, but Joseph raised the alarm and the area folks nearby arrested Adjetey.

He said although Adjetey’s accomplice managed to escaped, he was handed over to the police.

The prosecuting officer further added that Adjetey was charged with the offence and brought before the court.
