A Brussels Airlines aircraft returned to Accra International Airport shortly after takeoff on Monday evening following an in-flight technical fault, Ghana’s Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) said in a statement.
According to the GCAA, Flight SN278, bound for Lomé, departed Accra at 18:06 local time on 20 July 2026. The flight crew reported a technical fault while airborne and elected to return as a precautionary measure, landing safely at 18:18 — roughly 12 minutes after departure. No injuries were reported.
The regulator did not specify the nature of the fault. It said the issue is under investigation by Brussels Airlines “in accordance with established aviation safety procedures,” under GCAA oversight; no findings have yet been made public.
Brussels Airlines subsequently cancelled the flight. The GCAA said affected passengers are receiving assistance from the airline under Ghana’s Civil Aviation (Economic) Directives, 2019, Part 2 — Consumer Protection, which sets out airline obligations to passengers in the event of cancellation.
The regulator commended the flight crew’s handling of the incident and said Ghana’s aviation safety oversight system “remains robust.”
