The Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe Constituency, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has proposed to build a hostel at the University of Mines and Technology (UMAT) for the exclusive benefit of students from his constituency, who pursue courses of study at the institution.
The MP, who is also the Minister of Education, intends to next month cut the sod for the proposed hostel at UMAT.
Mr. Frank Fokuo Ababio, the Personal Assistant of the MP, who disclosed this initiative to parents whose wards had benefited from scholarships instituted by the Bosomtwe law maker, at a meeting said the intervention would also be extended to all public universities over time.
According to him, the MP also intends to allocate about GHc700,000 to schools towards these projects.
About 100 students from the Bosomtwe constituency are enjoying scholarships by Dr. Adutwum to study in various tertiary institutions.
The motive, he explained, is for all students from his constituency, who pursue courses at these public universities, to have a congenial and serene atmosphere to study.
The Personal Assistant stressed that from UMAT, the facility would spread to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University of Ghana, Legon and to all public universities.
Mr. Fokuo Ababio emphasised that these facilities would be funded from the MP’s own resources, which would be strictly allocated to students from the Bosomtwe constituency.
He said the Bosomtwe MP had paid a total of GHc400,000 to universities, which admitted 100 students under his scholarship for the next three years, besides the provision of laptops and periodic supply of food stuff to the beneficiary students.
Stunned by the news of the proposed interventions, some parents and guardians were full of praise for their MP and Education Minister, who they say had already done enough for them as constituents and parents, whose parental burdens and responsibilities have been reduced by such interventions.
Mr. Richard Ebo Dadzie, whose son is a level 100 student of KNUST and under the MP’s scholarship, described him as an “MP extraordinaire” and selfless.
Mr. Suleman Mohammed, the Bosomtwe constituency chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), whose son has benefitted from the largesse of the Minister said Dr. Adutwum had done enough for the constituency and solved majority of the challenges in the constituency, but the problem with the NPP is lack of communication to tout their achievements.
The 2016 PNC Parliamentary Candidate for Bosomtwe commended the MP and advised his critics to be wary that Rome was not built in a day and that governance is a process and, therefore, we must not be mischievous and ungrateful.
Mr. Addai Poku Aikins, the NPP Bosomtwe constituency chairman, from the monitoring and evaluation of the MP, said he has done his best and needs commendation.
He has announced plans to probe cases of mischievous actions by some disgruntled members of the NPP and constituents who are bent on derailing the achievements of the party and the MP in the constituency.
Baffour Kwaku Amoateng IV, Chief of Jachie, said Dr. OseiAdutwum’s vision for his constituents is overwhelming.
He mentioned some of the achievements as providing scholarships, construction of schools, support to widows and empowerment of women.
The chief described the Bosomtewe MP as humble and an agent of development, whose quest to give back to society was steadfast.
