As the New Patriotic Party (NPP) begins rebuilding following its 2024 electoral defeat, former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has restructured his office and named former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu as Chief of Staff, in a move widely seen as laying the groundwork for the party’s 2028 campaign.
The move comes as the NPP seeks to rebuild following its defeat in the 2024 general elections and is being interpreted as an early step towards reorganising the party’s political machinery ahead of the 2028 elections.
According to a statement announcing the restructuring, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu will coordinate all operational activities of the Bawumia office, a role that places him at the centre of the former Vice President’s political operations.
The statement described the appointment as a strategic decision, citing the former Suame Member of Parliament’s extensive political experience, grassroots connections and institutional knowledge accumulated over nearly three decades in public service.
Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu served as Majority Leader, Minority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs during his parliamentary career.
The statement also highlighted his international experience, noting that he served as Vice Chairman of the Global Organisation of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) and deputised as Chairman of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association International.
According to the statement, the appointment reflects Dr. Bawumia’s intention to establish a structured command system within his post-election office and future political activities.
The restructuring is also expected to end speculation that the former Vice President’s office would operate under what the statement described as a “loose and informal arrangement.”
As part of the reorganisation, Dr. Bawumia announced several other appointments to key positions within his office.
Former Member of Parliament for Suhum, Frederick Opare Ansah, has been named Director in Charge of Identifiable Activities, while former National Chairman of the NPP, Peter Mac Manu, will serve as Director in Charge of Political Strategy.
Former Board Chairman of the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company (BOST), Fred Oware, has been appointed Political Advisor.
Former Chief Executive of the State Transport Corporation (STC), Nana Akomea, will serve as Director in Charge of Communication and Branding.
Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has been assigned responsibility for Policy Coordination and will be assisted by Evon Hughes.
Former Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways, Anthony Abayifa Karbo, will oversee Organisation and Youth Inclusion, while Dr. Ekua Amoako has been appointed Spokesperson.
The appointments form part of a broader restructuring effort aimed at strengthening Dr. Bawumia’s political operations as the NPP prepares for the challenges ahead after its transition into opposition.
