AngloGold Ashanti commits to improving BECE pass rate in Obuasi

AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine marked an important milestone when it officially cut the sod for the construction of an ultra-modern Examination Printing Centre in the Obuasi East District for the Assembly and Education Directorate.

The Senior Manager, Sustainability, of AngloGold, Mr. Emmanuel Baidoo, noted that the initiative was part of the company’s commitment to contribute to improve the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) pass rate in its host communities under its 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan launched in 2022.

He said when completed, the new Examination Printing Centre would play a pivotal role in assisting the Education Directorate of the Obuasi East District Assembly with the necessary resources to print and administer mock examination materials to help better prepare candidates for the BECE.

“Establishing an Examination Printing Centre aligns with our broader community investment goals, which focuses on various initiatives aimed at enhancing education, promoting sustainability and fostering socio-economic development,” he said.

Mr. Baidoo added that when completed, the building, the multi-purpose printer and furniture among others, would cost GH¢800,000 and that a similar project would soon be rolled out in the Obuasi Municipality.

Mr. Edward Kwame Boakye, Human Resource Manager of the Obuasi East Education Directorate noted that, with the provision of the Printing Centre, most of the problems the Directorate faced regarding printing of examination question papers would be a thing of the past.

The Obuasi East District Chief Executive (DCE), Madam Faustina Amissah, said the initiative would enable the Ghana Education Service (GES) organise more mock examinations to prepare the students well for the BECE.

Mr. Jonas Davoro, Managing Director of Bachor and Jonas Company in charge of the project, assured that, barring any unforeseen circumstances, he would complete and hand over the project in three months time for the next mock examination papers to be printed at the facility.
