The over 100-year-old Obuasi Town Hall building situated at the Obuasi Central Market and houses over 300 master tailors and their apprentices was gutted by fire on Saturday night.
It is estimated that over 300 to 400 sewing and knitting machines belonging to both masters and learners have all been destroyed.
Three fire stations at Fomena, Obuasi Municipality and AngloGold contributed men and fire tenders to bring the fire under control.
The cause of the fire could not be ascertained at the time of filing the report.
Speaking to newsmen, the Obuasi MCE, Faustilove Appiah Kannin, thanked the Fire fighters for a yeoman’s job done to container the fire. She stated that the Assembly would pull down what had remained of the burnt Town Hall to avert any further disaster.
The Obuasi Municipal NADMO Director, Mrs Perpetual Koomson Bannor warned traders at the market not to go near the burnt Town Hall until further notice since the place is not safe.
Nana Kankam Boadu, Odikro of New Nsuta Estate on his part, stressed the need for a fire station for the Obuasi Central to attend to fire issues in that part of the Municipality.
Madam Helena Mensah one of the victims of the fire disaster told The Chronicle that she lost sewing machines, textiles etc and called for support.
