Agbavitor unseats Volta Chair

The Volta Regional Congress of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to elect new executives for the party has ended peacefully at the regional capital, Ho, with the incumbent Regional Chairman, Mr. Henry Ametefe, losing his position to Mr. Mawutor Agbavitor.

However, the Regional Secretary, Mr. James Gunu, a local government expert, humiliated his two contenders as he polled 456 votes to retain his position, with the opponents, Mr. Albert Laurent Sakabutu and Gladstone Stanley, polling 110 and 14 respectively.

Speaking to The Chronicle after his victory, the experienced politician, who was a former District Chief Executive for Akatsi-North, said the success achieved at the polls signified victory for the NDC in the pending 2024 general election, stressing that last Saturday was a “spiritual day” because it marked two years of the death of the Founder of the party, the late former President J.J. Rawlings.

Mr. Gunu said the only thing that the party could do to honour the Founder was to work hard to wrestle power from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), because if the late Founder of the party were to be alive, he would not tolerate the hardship the government had made Ghanaians go through.

The Regional Secretary, therefore, urged members and sympathisers of the NDC at the grassroots to support any strategy that the party would come up with to win the pending general election, stressing that they would definitely be rewarded when the party won the election.

The position of first Vice Chairman was taken away from the incumbent, Mr. George Loh, by Mr. Egypt Kudoto.

Meanwhile, Musah Umar Farouq reports from Wa that Upper West Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abdul NsirSaani, retained his seat in the regional executive election on Saturday.

Mr. Abdul Nasir, also known as Bunas, polled 227 votes to defeat his only contender, Alhassan Adams, who polled 127.

The Regional Secretary, Charles Lwanger Puozuing, also polled 233 votes against 151 for Nicodemus N.B.D. Dery.

In the Women’s Organiser contest, Prisca Domenyevi Kuupol Bagonluri emerged victorious, polling 21votes to beat her contender, Memuna Mahama Yahaya.
