AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine has organised a day’s Community Durbar and Health Screening to climax a month dedicated to Breast and Prostate Cancer, as well as Mental Health at Sanso in the Obuasi West Municipality of Ashanti region.
Mr Yaw Opoku Britwum, Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist of AGA noted, “we are gathered here today not just to have Medical Screenings and Education, but to shed light on an urgent matter that affects every one of us – Breast and Prostate Cancer, as well as Mental Health”.
He noted that a deep dive into these cases indicates that it is a stark reality that many individuals are diagnosed at late stages, often due to lack of awareness and limited access to screening services.
Mr. Opoku Britwum stated that early detection and timely intervention are the strongest allies in the fight against Breast and Prostate cancer and that this knowledge must be an integral part of the communities.
“I am happy to announce that through our partnerships we have collectively reached over 23,000 individuals since 2021.
This year alone the Obuasi Mine and partners are proud to have touched the lives of over 5,000 Community members through our mini clinics”, he added.
Mr. Opoku Britwum said the company was about to complete and commission the construction of the ultra modern health centre, which will serve the Binsere/Dokyiwa communities and the CHPS Compound and Health Staff Quarters at Apitikoko.
Also to be commissioned, he disclosed, is the refurbished Akrokerri Health Centre, which will include a new wing housing a modern surgical theatre among other amenities.
Mrs. Mavis Nana YaaKyei, Social Development and Gender Superintendent of the company noted that management used the whole of October to sensitise the entire Obuasi Community on Breast and Prostate Cancer, as well as Mental Health, during which three separate mini clinics were held.
