A 70-year-old man, Mustapha Amukwei Ankrah, has been arraigned before the Dansoman Circuit Court for allegedly intermeddling in the estate of his late son and depriving his grandchildren access to the property left in their care.
Mustapha, who is unemployed and resides at Dansoman, was charged with intermeddling, contrary to Section 17(b)(iii) of the Intestate Succession Law, 1985 (PNDC Law 111).
He pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The case is being presided over by Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Bassit, with Chief Inspector Portia Nuarko leading the prosecution.
According to the facts presented by the prosecution, the complainant, Abraham Nii Amuquaye Ankrah, a teacher living at Dansoman, lodged a complaint against his grandfather, Mustapha, for refusing to hand over two houses located at No. 115, Nii Ayi Bonte Street, Beach Road-Dansoman, which belonged to the complainant’s late father, Abu Ankrah.
The court heard that after the death of the complainant’s parents in 2008, Mustapha took custody of the children and managed two houses containing thirty-one (31) rooms, which were part of the deceased’s estate.
Before his death, Abu Ankrah reportedly instructed Mustapha to hand over the houses to his children once they reached adulthood.
However, the prosecution said that despite all the children now being above 18 years, the accused has refused to release the property to them.
Instead, he allegedly rented out the rooms for his own benefit and neglected the welfare of the grandchildren.
On February 22, 2024 the complainant reported the matter to the Dansoman Police Station, DOVVSU Unit, leading to Mustapha’s arrest. During interrogation, he is said to have admitted to the offence in his caution statement.
A bench warrant was issued for his arrest on September 5, 2025, but later rescinded on October 6, 2025 following his appearance in court.
He was subsequently granted bail in the sum of GH¢50,000 with two sureties, one of whom must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
As part of the bail conditions, the accused is to deposit his Ghana Card with the court registry. The prosecution has been directed to file all disclosures and witness statements ahead of the Case Management Conference (CMC) scheduled for November 10, 2025.
