Hours of downpour in the Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis last weekend exposed poor drainage works in the metropolis.
The downpour, which started in the hours of Saturday and continued to Sunday, the next day, resulted in roads in the Twin-City being submerged by flood waters – exposing the poor drainage of the city.
Market Circle, for instance, was heavily flooded, making it difficult for vehicles to ply the road.
The Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) hospital located in the area was also flooded.
Stores dotted along Market Circle roads were submerged in water. Fono Ano on the Kwesimintsim-Assekae road was equally flooded.
An Astro Turf in Effiakuma was submerged in water, underscoring the severity of the downpour.
In another development, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Wassa Amenfi East, Raymond Nana Ebbah, has disclosed that the Assembly plans to establish a committee to oversee the reclamation of degraded lands with the intent to restore them for productive use.
“The Assembly plans to establish a committee to reclaim lands lost to illegal mining, which previous administrations failed to address. We intend to restore these lands and utilise them productively”.
To make the reclamation effort appealing, MCE Raymond Nana Ebbah announced that the Assembly would incentivise the reclamation process by offering rewards to miners who voluntarily participate in rehabilitating degraded sites.
“To motivate miners to reclaim degraded lands, the Assembly will offer a reward package to those who participate, setting a positive example for others,” he said.
The MCE disclosed this when he led a team of Police and Military to launch the fourth edition of the anti-galamsey operation in the region.
During the operation, the MCE told the media that he observed one miner voluntarily reclaiming his degraded land.
“A key takeaway is that we’ve observed successful land reclamation efforts and plan to mandate arrested illegal miners to restore degraded lands and fill holes”.
