A police sergeant stationed at the Madina Police Station has been arrested following a shooting incident at Ritz Junction in Accra, which left two persons with gunshot wounds.
The officer, identified as General Sergeant Mathew Aboase, is currently in police custody as the Adenta-Abokobi Divisional Police Command investigates the circumstances surrounding the incident, which occurred on Sunday, October 11, 2026.
According to a statement issued by the police, preliminary investigations revealed that the shooting followed a confrontation between the officer and some members of the Ritz Junction Taxi Drivers Union.
The confrontation reportedly escalated when the officer allegedly threatened the drivers with his service pistol, prompting some of them to attempt to disarm him.
Police said the weapon accidentally discharged during the struggle, hitting two persons who were nearby.
The victims were identified as Doe Asinyo, who sustained a gunshot wound to the left thigh, and 34-year-old Gifty Nyimahen, who suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Both victims were rushed to the Madina Pentecost Hospital for emergency medical attention.
While Doe Asinyo was treated and subsequently discharged, Gifty Nyimahen was admitted before being referred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for further treatment.
Officer detained, pistol seized
The Adenta-Abokobi Divisional Police Command confirmed that Sergeant Aboase had been arrested and detained to assist investigations.
His service pistol has also been retained as evidence to aid investigators in establishing the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Although preliminary police findings suggest that the firearm discharged accidentally during the confrontation, investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the incident.
The Command has assured the public that appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the law.
The incident raises questions about the circumstances under which the officer allegedly drew his firearm during the confrontation and whether his conduct complied with police procedures governing the use of firearms.
Police have yet to announce any charges against the officer.
