Former Vice president and flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to rebuild the business and tourism ecosystem at La Pleasure Beach following its demolition.

Dr Bawumia said the beach was socially, economically and culturally significant to Ghana and had over the years become a major tourism destination and source of livelihood for thousands of people, particularly the youth.

In a statement issued in Kumasi yesterday, October 3, 2026, he described the demolition of La Beach as “sad” and expressed concern about the destruction of movable assets belonging to businesses operating at the site.

“It is particularly painful and surprising that even movable assets which the owners could have removed easily were destroyed in a most bizarre fashion,” he said.

Dr Bawumia said La Beach had also hosted international functions and entertainment events and played a role in activities associated with the Year of Return under the previous NPP administration.

He said a future government under his leadership would make La Beach a major tourism and economic enclave while working with businesses and other stakeholders to restore economic activity at the site.

As part of his proposed measures, Dr Bawumia said his administration would rebuild the beach economy and issue leases to individual businesses operating there.

He also promised to redesign the area to meet required standards and provide support to operators to enable them to run their businesses.

According to him, the redevelopment would seek to accommodate both major hospitality establishments and smaller businesses that contribute to the beach economy.

“We will secure the space for Labadi Beach Hotel and others and allow them to coexist with smaller businesses who together create the beach ecosystem,” he said.

Dr Bawumia further pledged to engage the owners of Laboma Beach to resolve outstanding issues and work with them to bring their operations into compliance with the law.

He said attention would also be given to the lagoon and environmental challenges in the area, particularly flooding.

“We will also work on the lagoon and resolve issues related to flooding and the environment,” he said.

Dr Bawumia said the measures were intended to protect and improve the livelihoods associated with the beach economy.

“I am committed to save the thousands of jobs that beach economy supports and to improve them,” he stated.
