A nurse, Salomey Awiti Bafoh, has been remanded into police custody by the Circuit Court, Adenta over an alleged role in the publication and circulation of false news on social media.
Bafoh, who appeared before Her Honour Angela Attachie, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecution alleges that Bafoh aided and abetted Barbara Asantewaa Kodua, also known as “Ghana Jollof,” who is currently at large and believed to be domiciled in the United Kingdom, to publish and circulate false news on TikTok.
The charge is said to be contrary to Section 20 of the Criminal Offences Act.
According to the prosecution, Bafoh, a nurse residing at Techiman, acted as a liaison for Kodua and assisted in disseminating videos produced by her through various social media platforms.
The prosecution told the court that Kodua operated a TikTok account under the name “BAK Ghana Jollof” and had, over a period, allegedly produced and published videos containing offensive and inciting statements with the potential to provoke violence.
One of the videos under investigation allegedly contained threats to overthrow the Government of Ghana and burn Ghana, among other statements.
The prosecution said investigations subsequently identified Bafoh as a collaborator of Kodua.
It alleged that Bafoh recruited other persons to redistribute and circulate the videos through various social media platforms.
The prosecution further alleged that investigations had uncovered financial arrangements between the two accused persons, under which Kodua, while in the United Kingdom, allegedly remitted money to Bafoh to support the activities.
Bafoh allegedly distributed portions of the money to other persons involved in redistributing and recirculating the videos.
The prosecution said investigations were continuing to identify and locate other persons who participated in the alleged redistribution of the videos.
Bail refused
Following Bafoh’s plea, her lawyers, led by Baffour Awuah, prayed the court to admit her to bail.
Counsel argued that Bafoh had a permanent job and a fixed place of abode and was therefore not a flight risk.
He also told the court that she had a four-year-old child whose welfare depended on her.
The prosecution, however, opposed the bail application, arguing that investigations were still ongoing.
In refusing the application, Her Honour Angela Attachie said the allegations bordered on national security and noted that the prosecution had not completed its investigations.
The court consequently ordered that Bafoh remain in police custody to enable investigators to complete their work.
The case has been adjourned to September 30, 2026.
Barbara Asantewaa Kodua remains at large.
