Agogo Traditional Council observes 40th day of demise of late Omanhene

The Asante Akyem Traditional Council, led by Nana Juaben Afrakoma Serwaa Kusi Oboadum, Agogomanhemaa last Thursday held the 40-Day Observance of the late Paramount Chief, Nana Kwame Akuoko Sarpong.

The Council was joined by traditional authorities from across Asanteman including Barima Sarfo Tweneboah Kodua, Kumawumanhene; Odeneho Okyere Kusi Ntrama, Essumehyamanhene; Nana Debrah Bediako Boateng, Kwamanmanhene; Nana Agyakoma Difie II, Asante Mampongmanhemaa; Nana Yaa Adutwumwaa Mmorosa, Kenyase No.1 manhemaa and Nana Nyarko Abora Sika, Queen mother of Manso Nkwanta Traditional Area.

Other dignitaries who graced the event were the Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang who led a delegation of the government officials, including Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene.

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; Dr. Henry Kwabena Kokofu, former Bantama MP; Rev. Sampson Kwaku Boafo, former Subin MP; Mr. John Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, founder of the Movement for Change and Bishop Kwaku Asiamah, leader of the Ajaguraja Movement, were also at the one-week procession.

The Omanhene of Agogo Traditional area, Nana Kwame Akuoko Sarpong celebrated his 50th anniversary of his enstoolment and occupation of the “Kyei ne Krobon” stool with a low-key celebration at the Agogo Palace on January 1, 2026 to mark the occasion of five decades of peaceful and impactful leadership.

He, however, passed on to glory on Tuesday February 24, 2026 at the age of 88, after reigning for 50 years having occupied the ‘Kyei ne Krobon stool’ at the prime age of 38.

Lawyer Akuoko Sarpobg was installed as the Omanhene of Agogo on December 23, 1975 upon the demise of his uncle, Nana Kwaku Duah.

He swore the oath of allegiance to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Opoku Ware II at the Manhyia Palace to legitimise his position.

His alma mater are Accra Academy, Opoku Ware School, University of Ghana and Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration.

He was called to the Ghana Bar in October 1965, heralding an outstanding legal and public service career.

As a young lawyer, he served as a Public Prosecutor (Assistant State Attorney at the Attorney General’s Department in Cape Coast.

Nana Agyakoma Difie II, Asante Mampongmanhemaa

He served as the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North Constituency (1979-1981) during the Third Republic and the opposition spokesman on Foreign Affairs.

In governance, he held key positions and served as the Secretary (Minister) of Health (1988-1991) and Secretary of The Interior (1991-1992) in the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) administration as well as the Secretary of Chieftains and Culture when the country returned to civilian rule in 1992.

Nana Akuoko Sarpong also served as a Member of the Council of State in the 4th Republic.
