More than 1,500 Ghanaians living in South Africa have registered for the ongoing voluntary repatriation exercise being coordinated by the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria.
The High Commission disclosed this in a statement issued on June 1, 2026, announcing a temporary suspension of new registrations to allow for the processing and screening of the large number of applications already received.
According to the mission, the suspension will take effect from June 2, 2026, and is intended to facilitate the verification of applicants in collaboration with South African Home Affairs authorities.
“To date, over 1,500 Ghanaians have registered, and the verification and processing of these applications is currently underway,” the statement noted.
The High Commission explained that the pause in registration does not signal the end of the repatriation exercise. It assured Ghanaians who have not yet signed up that another phase of registration will be announced after the current applications have been processed.
“The repatriation exercise has not yet ended,” the mission stressed, adding that details of the next registration window would be communicated in due course.
The High Commission also expressed appreciation to the Ghanaian community in South Africa for its cooperation, patience and understanding as authorities work to ensure a smooth and well-organised process.
The voluntary repatriation exercise is aimed at facilitating the return of Ghanaians who wish to relocate from South Africa back to Ghana under a structured arrangement coordinated by the Ghanaian authorities.
