The leadership of Road Transport Operators has directed the public to disregard reports of a purported 20 percent increase in public transport fares scheduled to take effect from June 2, 2026, describing the announcement as illegal and unauthorized.

According to the operators, no agreement has been reached with the Ministry of Transport regarding any upward adjustment of transport fares, contrary to publications circulating in sections of the media.

In a statement issued yesterday, the transport operators said the decision by the group behind the announcement failed to follow the established fare adjustment procedures jointly agreed upon by the Ministry of Transport and recognized transport unions.

“The Executives of the Road Transport Operators have not engaged the Ministry in any transport fare upward adjustment. The decision by the supposed group is illegal as it has not gone through the fare adjustment protocol and procedure agreed between the Ministry of Transport and the Road Transport Operators,” the statement stressed.

The operators condemned the announcement and urged commuters, drivers, vehicle owners, loading point managers and other stakeholders to disregard it.

They further directed all transport unions, associations and operators across the country to maintain the existing approved fares and refrain from implementing any unilateral fare increases until official notice is given.

According to the statement, the transport sector leadership is monitoring developments in the next fuel pricing window and will engage the appropriate authorities should circumstances warrant a fare review.

“We are monitoring the next pricing window and should there be the need for any fare adjustment, the public will be duly notified,” the statement noted.

The operators assured both transport workers and commuters that they remain committed to protecting their welfare while ensuring stability within the road transport sector.

The clarification comes amid public concern following reports that transport fares could rise by 20 percent from Monday, June 2, 2026.
