A joint operation conducted  by two elite units from the Police Headquarters, backed by a special squad from Bekwai Police in Ashanti Region on Wednesday, April 15, 2026 has led to the arrest of two key suspects, in connection with the killing of Berekum Chelsea footballer, Dominic Frimpong.

Mohammed Ahmed

The suspects are Gideon Bawa, 30, aka ‘War Leader’ and Mohammed Ahmed, 25, aka ‘I Can Do’.

Frimpong, 20, on loan from Dorma Ahenkro based Aduana FC to Berekum Chelsea, this year, was shot dead during a highway robbery at Kwame Dwomor and Sheresu, along the Bibiani-Kukuom road in the Ahafo Region on the night of Sunday April 12, 2026.

His team was returning home from a week 29 league match against Samartex FC at Samreboi, in the Western Region.

Information available to The Chronicle from a deep-throat source at the Police Headquarters in Accra, stated that when the robbery occurred on the night of Sunday April 12, 2026 the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, assembled and dispatched a crack team of detectives to the scene.

Gideon Bawa

These detectives were drawn from the National Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) and the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit (AARU) all at the headquarters of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The IGP tasked them to locate and smash the gang responsible for the highway robbery and killing of the footballer.

The special investigation team, which was backed by the versatile Special PID squad based at Bekwai in the Ashanti South Region of the police, landed in the crime area on Tuesday, April 14, 2026 and after studying the environment for a few hours zoomed into action.

At the scene, the detectives fell on a farmer who claimed to have witnessed the incident from an undisclosed location and followed leads to action.

On Wednesday April 15, 2026 barely 24 hours later and following sustained intelligence gathering, the suspects involved in the robbery were identified as Mohammed Ahmed aka ‘Can Do’ and his gang. The leader was later located in his hideout at Atimatim in Kumasi.

Upon sighting the police, he reportedly engaged the well-armed officers in a shootout, but the firing power of the officers subdued him as he was seriously injured. He was subsequently rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for medical treatment.

While receiving treatment under heavy police armed guard, the suspect allegedly confessed to his involvement in the robbery, named his accomplices as Dauda, Hoefe, Bawa Gideon, and one A.J., aka Okoro, a Toyota Voxy driver who conveyed the gang to the scene for the robbery.

Items seized from the robbers

The suspect further confessed to his involvement in other dastardly criminal activities including the robbery at Nkasiem Police Station, during which two service AK47 assault rifles were stolen, as well as the Fufunso mobile money vendor robbery and murder, among others.

Further intelligence operation led to the arrest of suspect Bawa Gideon, who admitted his involvement and corroborated the statement of their leader, Mohammed Ahmed, now on admission.

Police retrieved one (1) foreign pistol loaded with two (2) rounds of 32mm auto ammunition, eleven (11) rounds of ‘BB’ cartridges, one cutlass, one pepper spray, two pairs of desert boots, assorted mobile phones and a black hood.

According to the unimpeachable source, Mohammed Ahmed has established a number of different robbery groups who operate across the country, especially in the Western, Ashanti, Bono, and Eastern Regions.

That, for strategic reasons, he has adopted a modus operandi of  recruiting members of his groups from every sector of the country, specifically Yeji, Atebubu, Walewale, without knowing themselves.

The members only meet during robbery expeditions after which they dispersed to their hideouts in the regions.
