Chelsea battle Manchester United at Stamford Bridge

A key contest in the hunt for Champions League football takes place under the lights at Stamford Bridge on Saturday night, as Chelsea do battle with Manchester United in the Premier League.

Following their 2-1 victory in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford in September, the Red Devils are looking to complete the top-flight double over the Blues for just the second time after the 2019-20 season.

Liam Rosenior’s tenure as Chelsea boss started brightly, winning his first four Premier League games, but the Blues are now feeling the Blues following a disappointing run of just one win in their last seven top-flight fixtures (D2 L4) – only Tottenham have collected fewer points in that time (one).

Chelsea’s Champions League qualification hopes were dealt another blow after last weekend’s bruising 3-0 home defeat to title-chasing Man City.

With Chelsea and Man United coming off disappointing defeats, there is no margin for error in the race for a top-five finish, setting the stage for an entertaining, end-to-end contest in West London where claiming maximum points would significantly boost their respective causes.

This fixture has been drawn more often than any other in Premier League history (27) and considering there is little to separate these two teams, the spoils could well be shared once again. With Man United pair Martinez and Maguire both suspended, and Chelsea’s backline struggling for consistency, a high-scoring stalemate seems more likely than a cagey tactical battle.

Tottenham, Brighton lock horns in game week 33

The Roberto De Zerbi derby kicks off at 5.30pm on Saturday evening, when Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion lock horns in gameweek 33 of the 2025-26 Premier League season.

Richarlison, Tottenham

The Lilywhites’ new era began in familiar fashion with a 1-0 loss to Sunderland last weekend, while the Seagulls continued on their upward trajectory with a 2-0 triumph at Burnley.

Ironically plunged into a deeper sense of darkness at the Stadium of Light, Tottenham’s De Zerbi days could hardly have started any worse; one defeat, no goals, and one more serious injury to contend with.

Marginal improvements may have been visible in Spurs’ play, but marginal improvements do not put points on the board for the relegation-battling hosts, who remain two points below the dreaded dotted line in the Premier League table with a mere six games left on the calendar.

Winless in 14 Premier League matches since 2026 rolled around, Tottenham have now endured the fourth-longest winless run in the competition at the start of a single calendar year – the three sides to endure longer such streaks were unsurprisingly all demoted come the end of the season.

Spurs may have had more bark about them in De Zerbi’s debut, but there is still an alarming lack of bite from the Europa League holders, who are now facing the most in-form team in the Premier League over the last six games.

Coupled with Tottenham’s atrocious home form and Brighton’s exceptional displays on the road of late, the Seagulls could push Tottenham further towards the trapdoor.

Napoli, Lazio faceoff in Serie A

After their victory streak was ended last week, Napoli‘s Serie A title defence is all but over, but their fight to finish second will continue at home to Lazio on Saturday evening.

The reigning champions sit a long way behind leaders Inter Milan with just six rounds remaining, while their Roman rivals suffered another setback last time out.

Stanislav Lobotka, Napoli

Following five straight wins, a minor slip was surely enough to end any slim hope of retaining the Serie A title, as Napoli fell nine points behind Inter in this year’s Scudetto race.

While the latter impressively recovered from two goals down to win 4-3 in Como, Antonio Conte’s side struggled to a 1-1 away draw with Parma.

After falling behind via an early error, the Partenopei drew level through talisman Scott McTominay, but they failed to find a winner despite dominating the final half-hour.

Even so, Napoli remain favourites to finish runners-up, having overtaken AC Milan by claiming 16 points from a possible 18 across the last six Serie A matchdays – more than any other team.

Before returning to Naples this weekend, the Campanian club are unbeaten in top-flight home fixtures since December 2024, when Lazio won 1-0 at Stadio Maradona.

After a brief blip, Napoli can immediately return to winning ways by beating a meandering Lazio side on home turf.

While the travel-sick visitors will be focused on their quest to reach the cup final, Conte’s men are sprinting towards the finish line in Serie A.

Bournemouth meet Newcastle in Premier League showdown

The St James’ Park spotlight will soon shine down on Andoni Iraola, who could be auditioning for a new job when Bournemouth meet Newcastle United in Saturday’s Premier League showdown.

Anthony Gordon, Newscastle Utd

The Cherries are contesting their first match since it was confirmed that Iraola would leave at the end of the season, and a second Eddie Howe succession is not beyond the realm of possibility.

Iraola did not directly take the reins from Howe at Bournemouth – Jason Tindall, Jonathan Woodgate, Scott Parker and Gary O’Neil all came between them – but the Spaniard has inevitably been tipped to follow in the Newcastle manager’s footsteps again.

More on the Bournemouth situation later, but the managerial merry-go-round should not only be limited to head coaches who are leaving their posts voluntarily, as the Magpies boss has arguably never been under more intense pressure than he is now.

Newcastle’s propensity to drop points came to the fore at Selhurst Park last Saturday, where Jean-Philippe Mateta struck twice in the final 10 minutes to propel Crystal Palace to a 2-1 comeback victory and condemn the Magpies to their third loss on the spin in all tournaments.

Even a low Newcastle side can often be relied upon to make the net bulge at home, and we have faith in Howe’s men to at least stop the losing rut with a hard-fought point.
